Very Showery
Eva breakfast in bed. Phil’s boil still coming and yorks! Men worked all day. Out and about by pond. To fetch paper but none came. Wrote Doz. In to call on Blain’s with Zeus. Mrs Clements there and two children. Teddy arrived back from London at 7.15. Slosh in the evening. I in billiard-room, watched.

To fetch paper with Zeus. Mended Eva’s coat lining. Alys and Phil to Richmond. Phil’s hair cut. Called on Blain’s with Zeus. Alys and I to East Layton to post papers to J.H.M. in Delhi. Men played Slosh in evening.

Dull.
Teddy rang up Mitchell at Thornaby. I took Zeus for walk, and Phil and Teddy took Ozzy. Packed a bit. Felt very coldly (stuffy). In all p.m. and 3 men in Lincoln-Zephyr to Mitchell’s with engine (Flight-Commander Mitchell). Back 7.30. Supper. In billiard room. Early to bed.

Very windy. Out with dogs. Finished packing. At 2, Dennis and I off in Lincoln-Zephyr and had coffee en route. After Newark, (filled up with petrol) it poured for hours. Dined Cromwell Hotel, Stevenage (5/- dinner). 4 Cambridge Gate at 10, about.

Mildish, sun.
Unpacked. To Selfridge’s and Dolcis’ and Bond’s, etc shopping for Alys, Teddy and Phil. To 71 Hillfield Court to lunch with Kit. Away at 3.15. To 4 Cambridge Gate for money. To Bond’s again. Posted parcel to Phil. Tea. Dennis in about 8.25. He did goldfish tanks. Wrote Alys. Knitted. Read paper. Very sleepy. To bed 10.20. (Bought little rudd 3d)

Gale, showers.
To Albany Street shops only. Unpicked fronts and sleeves from taffeta and cloqué frocks. Washed and ironed them. Arranged U.S. lace in one. Florence out. Dennis in at 8.10. Milk soup. Cold meat and red rice. He cleaned out Dictators’ Tank.

Cooler, sunny.
To shops in High Street and on to 48 Cambridge Terrace. Saw Miss Morrison from Ruthven’s flat about letting my room. In all p.m. Wrote dress account for diary in big book. Dennis in 8. Listened-in, knitted. (Wrote Alys). To bed 10.15. Dennis 11. Phil rang up at past 11, about Alys’ pains over her heart. Dennis down to me, very worried.

Dullish.
With Dennis to shops. Got water-jug Selfridge’s. Walking home, met Lois and Mrs Paul Leigh-Hunt. In car home with them. Arranged béret with net veils. Dennis in 8 or so. Phil phoned at about 9.30. Asked if I would go there. I packed up.

Saturday 9th January 1937

Dull. Cool.
Breakfast 8. Phoned King’s Cross. Sent telegram to Layton saying arrive 2.41. Phoned Poz and Kitty. Dennis took me to King’s Cross, and I by 10 train. Arrived York 1.15. On and arrived Darlington 2.41. Bought 2 sandwiches at York and ate them and apple on platform (Train 1.55 on). Blain met me. Alys in bed, but better. Phil and I tea up in her bedroom. Dinner with Phil. All sat in her room in evening. Listened-in a bit.

(Dennis took Berry’s to Sheppey and phoned from Caves in evening.) Sat with Alys and took Zeus out for a walk across fields. Phil took Ozzy earlier. Dr Woodsend came at 2.30 to see Alys. Careful examination and said heart quite sound. Stay in bed. Tea upstairs. Phil in top room and after dinner. Knitted.

Wrote Kit, Doz, Eva. Phil wrote to Poz and Doz! He up in top-room, working a lot. At 3, I took Phil and Ozzy to lane, and then Zeus to T (By Forcett). Walked back. Phil drove back. Dennis phoned. Phil working till 9.30 in top room. Phil very bad night (with noise).

I to Richmond (took Cooper too) for wool, fish, fruit. Phil in top room working hard. Phil rested in Alys’ room. Up in top room with Phil (who lonely), knitting. Phil to bed at 9 – door open. He very tired. Dennis phoned.

Perfect, sunny.
Talk to console Mrs Cooper! I to Richmond for tongue. Posted Eva’s beret and wool. Mary and Harold Chas came (en route from Carlisle) and stayed lunch. Phil to Forcett at 3, to shoot with Charles Mitchell. Dr Woodsend to see Alys. Phil in top room a little. I phoned Eva about Flew.

To Darlington with Phil for his x-ray 11. I bought dressing-jacket and wool. Began knitting collar for it. Alys in bed till 3. Men cutting down big plane tree, near house. Alys in big spare room, as window might be broken. Alys down to tea (in hall). Phil out watching tree till 5 and got rather cold. Rested indoors. Listened to Air Raid on radio.

Phil rested in Alys’ room depressed and “livery”, I think. I knitted collar. Took dogs a walk in fields. Phil played l’Attaque with Alys. Temperature normal. Alys and Phil to bed at 8.45. Dennis arrived by Jubilee. Phil feeling sick.

Dennis and Alys off to London on Jubilee. Trunk sent off. Phil and I to Richmond. Dennis’ dress-suit to be cleaned. Phil’s plus fours to Murphy’s. Phil and I long walk over fields with dogs. In top room with Phil running engines. Phil tired; sat in sitting-room. Read Whittaker. Alys rang up from Bulstrode House at 8.45.

At 10.45 Phil and I in Ford to Meet at Whashton. Upon hill till 12. Gave sugar to the bees. Phil rested outside and I de-mothed Jaeger dressing gown. At 2 heard Chas Mitchell not coming. So I took Phil’s plus-4 suit to Richmond (cleaner). Phil long walk with dogs. Did flowers. In top room re-lining Jaeger coat, Phil cleaning engines. Alys and Dennis phoned at 8.30. from Bulstrode. Good news Sir Maurice Cassidy’s opinion on Alys’ heart.

Perfect day. Cold.
Lovely snow and sunshine. Out in fields with Phil and dogs. Wrote Ella, Alys, Doz (for cheque). Post card for coffee. Watched all 5 men getting trunk logs up (hoist) and hauled back by Armstrong. Phil happy with Flight-Commander Alan Mitchell running red engine. They had tea up in top room. I sewed lining into Jaeger coat. Phone from Teddy to Phil. Quiet evening in sitting-room.

Blain influenza. To ask after him. I enquired after Mrs Bainbridge. Motored to East Layton (Phil phoned to Mr Booth) and Ravensworth. Oranges to Blain. Postal order for passports. Mr Booth came at 3.45. Stayed tea. Signed passports. Up in top room knitting while Phil did work on tender. He tired and felt a little sick later. Both to bed about 9.

With Phil to Richmond; he had hair-cut. I to Foster’s Cleaners and Murphy’s. Doctor Thompson to Blain. At 3 Phil and I in Austin to Collier Lane. He with gun. Back and heard Charles Mitchell and friend, John Heighton(?) coming to tea. They came (Gilling Rector’s son). In billiard room. Alys and Dennis phoned and suggested we return. Took Mrs C’s temperature 99.8 10 p.m. Rang up Dennis and station. Decided to by 1.21 on Saturday.

Packed our 3 suitcases. Doris helped. Got Times with Zeus. Phil got Ford hood up. He and I at 12.30 to Darlington (Cleveland Garage man met us to take Ford back to Layton). Took 1.21 train to King’s Cross. Sandwiches and tangerines. Arrived 5.35 King’s Cross. Met by Alys and Dennis. Lincoln-Zephyr to 4 Cambridge Gate. Talk. Dennis out to Bulstrode. Dinner 7.45. (Ives to help Florence for week).

Dennis cleaned goldfish tanks. Alys and Phil walked in Regent’s Park. After Phil’s rest, all of at 3.15 in rain, for drive. Phil driving Lincoln-Zephyr. Phil rather depressed about himself all day. “Are you Sure” at tea-time. Alys rang Eva.

Alys and I out with Dennis. Alys to Brownlee. Wrote to Mrs Cooper. I to Sainsbury. Back, and walked with Phil to Bond’s. Back. Lunch. I to Simmond’s to get jug 3/-. Bought tea-set 12/- 25 pieces 2nd hand and bedroom slippers (Phil). Dorrie to tea. Phil to Dr Aymer (Alys too). Sidney called for Dorrie 5.30. I took Alys fur coat to Mrs Ogel, 40 Ordnance Road, to be lined.

I out to change slippers at Baker’s. To 48 Cambridge Terrace, saw Mrs Carr-Glyn. Back to 4 Cabridge Gate. (Phil back from Brownlee). I to National Liberal Club 1. Lunch with Jim Archer. To National Portrait Gallery. Then Stoll Picture Theatre and had tea and saw “Man who could work miracles” and “Showboat” with Paul Robeson. Ended 7.20! Back to Cambridge Gate. Dennis on in 8.35. Caviare. Ives in bed!

Tea at St George’s after. I to Arts Theatre Club and Russell’s and had supper Lyons’. To Embassy and saw “Climbing”. Skelton Knaggs queer actor. Back at 10.50. Paul Davis to dine and stayed till 12. Got grit in my eye.

James Campbell to tea (Alys out for hair). Dennis out to Pathologists’ dinner? Alys, Phil and I alone. Phil drew engine. We sewed fur coat pockets.

Out with Eva and Teddy in Ford to High Street. On with Eva walking to Treasure Cot about barracoats and Lewis’ for flannel ribbon, organdie patterns. Eva to Dr Flew 12.15. At 2.30 Dennis drove Eva and me to Fred Barnard’s (Doz and Poz, Elm Park Road). Agatha Shore there to choose pictures. We drove in Richmond Park and home at 5. Teddy to tea Hendon with Lord Swinton’s friends. Eva felt sick at dinnertime and cold. Bigger movements of baby. I cut out blue coat for Eva in bedroom (after Eva came).

Tea at 4 Cambridge Gate (after going Lewis’ for buttons). Dennis not in till 8.30. Postcards from Alys. Sewed all evening. To bed 10.30. Tired.

Met Lois at Swan & Edgar’s and to National Society Show at Royal Institute. She back to lunch with me at 4 Cambridge Gate. All p.m. sewed Eva’s coat and until 6.30. Then Dennis back and quick dinner and bath to Colisseum to see “Cinderella” Edna Best. Pepper gave us stalls. To Maples.

Letter from Phil to Dennis – 2nd sputum negative. I out to Richmond in Baby Austin. Chemist and wool. Dennis with men loading stones in Armstrong. I with them after lunch and dogs to quarry field. Then I called on Blain (convalescent) with Zeus and ball. Wrote Alys and Phil. Dennis wrote Phil in evening. We played Slosh till nearly 10 and cue game.

Snow and thaw.
Thick snow everywhere so no stones. Dennis very sad. He to call on Blain. I out with dogs and he also. Read after lunch. Walked to little quarry at 3.15 with Zeus. Dennis wrote Alys after tea, for post. Read “Prelude in Prague”. Dennis “Sparkenbroke” by Chas Morgan. Played Pyramids or snooker pool? in evening.

I egg at home and to Embassy Theatre to see “Tavern in the Town”.

Dull then rain. Out with Dennis to High Street. Posted nightgown to Alys in Baker Street. Back soon. Washed clothes. Lunch early. To Westminster Theatre 2.30. Saw “Uncle Vanya” Tchekov. Out with Dennis to High Street. Back in rain. Wrote Alys. Posted before 12. All p.m. did wool flowers on grey jumper. At 5 Dennis came. In taxi to King’s Cross Jubilee train. 5.30 to Darlington. Dinner on board. Blain in Armstrong to meet us. Zeus overjoyed. Ozzy too but is off after Elgy’s dog, so tied up a lot. To bed 10.

Sleet
Sun at breakfast. Then rain or sleet. Out in garden. Dennis and men putting in last big stones on stream cliff. Awful mud. I in Austin to Forcett with Zeus. Back and alone to Kirklands. 2 gallons of petrol 3.2. Wrote Alys and so did Dennis. Played Slosh after dinner. He gave me 150! Won twice.

Snow blizzard.
Out with Zeus in snow. Worked colours on old cardigan. Read Mystery in Channel – Crofts. Dennis and I out with Zeus and Ozzy (on chain). I to the Blain’s in p.m. with Faraday paint book and poster. Dennis cleaned gold-fish tanks. I helped all p.m. Slosh in evening until 10.

Packed suitcase and hat box with leeks, orchids, flowers, eggs, sea-kale, celery. Jubilee to London leaving Oz-dog at vets on way. Worm. Lunch on board. 2.15 King’s Cross (15 minutes late). Indoors. Working. Arranged flowers. Dennis in (cold), had been to Chiswick for case.

Out with Dennis and on to Selfridge’s and Lewis’ and Dean & Dawson, Handy’s, Ponting’s. To the Green Lizard to meet Kit, waited till 2. Lunch there. Message astray. Home. To tea with Menie. Back. Dolly and John asked themselves to supper, and brought sausages. Letters from Alys and Phil. I sent “Are you Sure?” to Phil. John posted.

Wrote Alys. Altered Hungarian coat, long phone talks Poz and Kit. After lunch to Burning Oak to visit Margaret Harris at Infirmary. Took 6 eggs, peppermints, oranges, grapes and a pear. Back to tea (Florence out). To dine White House with Dennis and Mollie Heanley. Back till 10. Then to bed.

Dennis to vote. I to Times Library. Then to vote L.C.C. Mrs Harvey at 48 Cambridge Terrace. I cleaned piece-drawer a bit. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Sewed sleeves of Hungarian coat and embroidered tunic with colours. Dennis back 8. After dinner, we went to Otto May’s and talked till about 10.30. Letter from Alys about adhesion cutting.

With Dennis to High Street. To Evans’ for Eva’s vests. Back. Changed. To 26 Compayne 1 o’clock. Harold Gibb (blind Padre) and wife and Swedish lady and a Miss McConnell. Back (via Barnes’ – bought bag, navy zip 7.11). Put blue and black cord (rag wools) on grey coat stuff, for scarf. Dennis in 8. Tired. I too. Letter from Alys correcting Otto.

Out with Dennis – shops. Back 10.30. Sewed scarf with cord edge and embroidery wools. Finished it. Dennis back at 4. Tea and quiet evening reading. I knitted Baby’s coat. Listened-in Hemsley “Wordsworth” and variety. To bed 10.30. No bath (tepid).

Washed gloves and combs. Tidied. Out to Selfridge’s, bought 2 Viennese jumper-coats! Things for lunch too. Back (to 48 Cambridge Terrace in a.m. for canvases). Painted all p.m. on “Phil on deckchair”. Sewed too. Dennis in to tea, but out to case for Hales (whooping cough?) In at 7.15. Dennis and I to Embassy. Saw “The Road to Rome”, play about Hannibal. Sewed at tweed coat buttonholes till 9.10. Dennis not home till about 10.30 and had dinner then (consultation in Kensington). I phoned Cooper about Zeus.

Teddy, Eva and Scotty and Kimbo arrived at 7.30. Dennis in at 8. Dinner, curry and Dennis out again. Teddy to see his people and Malcolm in with him.

Dennis to Lab. Eva with him for blood-count. Dennis back at 11.10 and he and Teddy off in Lincoln-Zephyr at 11.30 with dogs. Eva and I taxi to King’s Cross, on 1.20 train. Sandwiches. Arrived 6.40 (instead of 5.38). Blain and Armstrong met us. Dennis and Teddy had arrived an hour before at Layton Manor. Introduced Kimbo to Zeus and Ozzy. Very funny. Dinner. To bed 9.30.

Out in garden. Wrote Alys. Teddy took snapshots of dogs with Kimbo (aged about 5 weeks). After 12, I in Austin to Richmond (shops closed of course). Dennis and Teddy Slosh in evening. Eva and I knitted till 9.30. Up in billiard room then, and to bed.

Dennis out with Smith and Barber till 11.30. Snow then. I in Austin to Greta Bridge, but turned as snow storms bad. Dennis on bed all p.m. and into bed after tea 6.30 with bad cold; bread and milk. Out with dogs. Drove to Caldwell and Hutton Magna in Austin. Dennis in bed all day but sat by fire in evening and for dinner. I listened-in to Air Force show with him.

Dennis downstairs to breakfast. Zeus fetched two papers. Eva and I in Austin to Richmond. She drove. Shopped, Chemist. Home. In p.m. I took dogs a walk; then drove to Kirklands, Scotch Corner and back by Melsomby. Brown fish very ill all day. Dennis in garden a lot with me. Dennis and Teddy Slosh in evening. Packed.

Teddy and Eva late. I to 48 Cambridge Terrace for 2 p.m. Met Aungiers, who mended window and cleaned 3 windows. I washed things, and aired beds. Late to tea at 4 Cambridge Gate. Eva and Teddy to see Eve, with Kimbo. Teddy out to Bridge with his Father, after dinner.

At 4.50 Dennis in Lincoln Zephyr. All 4 of us to Victoria. Met Alys and Phil from Montano. Very late. 5.20 due. Came in about 6.10. Teddy and I in taxi with luggage. Others in Lincoln Zephyr. They too late; so Teddy and I very anxious, imagined accident. Dinner and Berry’s slept at 48 Cambridge Terrace.

To Sissie’s 4.30. Tea with her. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate at 7. (Eva and Teddy dined with Mrs McNalty). Dinner. Talk. To bed 10.

Took taxi to 48 Cambridge Terrace with more luggage. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Phil to Dr Chandler’s and Dr Burrill’s. Alys to Dean & Dawson. Sat with Alys. Away after tea with Alys and Phil. Home. Got food. Had supper at 48 Cambridge Gate!!! My first night slept here since October 19th 1935.

To 4 Cambridge Gate at 10 or so. Sat with Phil who a cold and in bed in “Eva’s” room. Lunch with Alys there. Phil in bed. Dr Aymer at 3.30. Alys and I to Victoria with ruse to meet Betty Shore and Tulloch’s. Successful! Arranged about Blain brining the Baby Austin up. Sent map to him. I home to supper. Bath and bed.

Cleaned and tidied up. Alys rang up. (Phil into Victoria Park Hospital. Dennis and Alys took him Lincoln Zephyr 10 a.m.) Met her Army and Navy Stores. Lunch there together. To V.P.H. via Liverpool Street and 6 bus. Phil there. Sat with him till 3. I home (tube). Meal at 5.15. At 6 to V.P.H. again, by 6 bus taking oats to Phil. Sat with him 7 – 9. Heard about Betty Shore’s visit (Teignmouth). Saw Mrs Henderson too. Back at 10.

Out and sandwiches in Victoria Park at 6 – 7. Back to Phil who had been shaved by Porter. “Widdle in their trousers”. Beeswax swallowed, “draws up the piles”. Alys and Dennis arrived 7.45. They took me home at 10.

In till 12, sewing turquoise leather bed-slippers and cleaned carpets too in p.m. Eva with Alys. To V.P.H. ate lunch with Phil and did crossword. Dr Chandler in 1 second. Away at 2.15. Home, after local shopping. Supper at 6.15. To Embassy Theatre. Saw “The Bat”, a thriller. Quite amusing.

Men began painting outside of house. Mrs Harvey came. She did stove and I to coal-cellar. Finished and posted Income Tax claim. At 2 to London Portrait Exhibition Private View. Alys and Eva there. To Swedish American Line and Cook’s about Steel’s and Kungsholm. To Burlington Gallery again. Paul and family there. Very late. Wrote to Amy Steel.

She got two hats 55/- each. I to Bourne and Hollingsworth alone. Got large black hat 37.11. Home. Painted fancy head, very bad. Supper. Phoned Alys. To Embassy. Saw “Festival Time”. Poorish. Suddenly got out at Penmaenmawr (no one to take money for ticket!) Bus on to Llanfairfechan; ate sandwiches on train. To Mrs Birching Pen-y-bryn. She put me up for night and sad story.

Unpleasant Commercial Traveller. Supper Hales. Phoned Alys. To International Art Congress 8 p.m. at Red Lion Square. Till 10. Home.

Mrs Harvey 10.30. At 11, I to 1st British Art Congress session, but at 12.45 away and to 4 Cambridge Gate. Lunch with Alys. Phil in bed and with horrid rash caught at V.P.H. Out with Alys to shops in Austin. Back and tea with her and Phil upstairs. Home, via Woolworth’s at 6.30. Did some painting on small canvas. Listened-in Castlerosse and supper and mended clothes.

With Alys in car to Marshall’s; bought table for Mollie Cave’s wedding. On to Lilian’s 3.30. Had her shingle my hair. 2/-. Vibratory massage 2/6 with olive oil, shampoo and set 3/6. Gave her 10/0 on 8/- bill. Home. Supper. “East Lynn” wireless. Did hats in kitchen.

To 4 Cambridge Gate. Tea with Eva, she drove me home after tea. Teddy in to tea. Eva made lists. Did my black coat (shorter).

Mrs Harvey came. Kit came at 11.30, till 12.55. Then I to Y.W.C.A. for lunch and on to Lewis’ for buckles. To Kardomah; to tube and back by train. Very crowded at Piccadilly. To shops, dairy. Listened-in and sewed. Wrote Alys by 6 o’clock.

Eva and I and train to Kidbrooke. 20 minutes 11d. Teddy met us in Ford with Scotty. We had Kimbo. Drove to Bide-a-wee. Minster. Tea. Teddy met Mabel Lane 5.20? Electric fused. Supper at 9.20. Mabel and Teddy in Mess Kit to Coronation Ball at Eastchurch R.A.F. station. Slept at Eva’s.

Up at 7. Mrs Harvey at 8 – 9. We put blankets away and carpet covered with papers. Taxi at 9 to King’s Cross. 9.50 to York 1.5d. Ate sandwiches on platform. 1.36 (but in at 1.45 or so) to Darlington. Arrived about 2.40. Blain with Armstrong car. Alys and Phil (in bed in Alys’ room). Dennis and Cave’s had gone today Dennis to see Antony Baxley on way home. Alys to Richmond. Tea in Phil’s room and dinner. To bed 10.15. Phil’s bad boils on knee and calf to be dressed every 3 hours.

Out and about with dogs and up in Alys’ room trying to help with Phil’s dressing, shaving. He only on sofa in evening while we made his bed. The 10th day he has spent in bed. Listened-in to news and to “Sunset at Spithead”. Alys and I both rested in p.m. Did flowers. To bed 10.15 Phil read Father’s diary (me: Philip Boyd, Kate and Alys’ father died of tuberculosis) dated 1861.

Ironed nightgown. I found partridge nest in orchard. Blain began stripping gun room. Alys and I to Richmond at 2.30. Shopped. Frocks for Blain baby at 2.6 and 2.3 ½ wool 7. Tea in hut. Alys, Phil and I all to Scargill after tea. Lovely drive on moor through many gates. 3 phone calls. Booth, Mitchell and finally Dennis but x-rays hadn’t arrived at Chandler.

Did flowers. Cotton dress 1st time. Phil up at 11 and to bee-hive and hut. Alys and I did lino on stairs, measured carpet, billiard room and discuss gun-room paper. ALys and I in Ford. Tyre burst (near here). Blain to tyres. Policeman fetched him. Dennis phoned in p.m. that Phil’s x-rays very good. But not to drive car. Alys and Blain put wax rack in hive. Angry bees. Blain stung on chin.

Phil down to breakfast in dressing gown – 1st time since I came. Finished socks and took them and frocks to Mrs Blain and coat. Alys to meet Dennis in Ford 2.20. Late and they arrived here 3.10. Tea in hut. Dennis in garden – very busy. Phil slept in his own room. I wrote Lois. We put all fish from tanks in pond.

Alys and Dennis off by Jubilee. Blain in Ford with them. I cleaned out both goldfish tanks, during day. D. Cooper cut her eye and Blain fetched her in p.m. Farmer Simpson came about vote registration. We put crate in beehive and carbolic cloth. Fire in Alys’ bedroom. Phil to bed there at 8.45. I sat there till 10.30.

After tea in hut, Phil gave me lesson in Ford. To T and back twice. Sewed in hut, while Phil rested till 7.20. Upstairs after dinner.

Did cross-stitch work on frill for stool in p.m. After dinner, in garden and Phil to bed 8.15. Alys rang up 8.35 or so. Eva very well. Fire in bedroom. Listened-in.

At 6 Mollie and Pat Hadow arrived! En route to Oban. I rang Alys at 7.20 to say about Doris. Warm in evening, but fire alight.

I drove Ford (with Phil). To East Layton for Postal Order. Double-declutching. After dinner. Phil and I painted new beehive in laundry with boiled oil and red. Phil to bed 9.10. I to bed 10.50. Phil and Blain lifted out crates and combs from hives, looking for Queen cells. I there too. Picked flowers. After lunch wrote Alys, Lois, Agatha. We Ford, through gate, but back as tyre soft. Hot and tired. Stormy. Finished cap knitting.

(Finished cap). Phil and Blain to Darlington. Phil to have hair cut. Blain to get lawn-mower parts. I washed and ironed linen coat and tweed skirt where butter got on. Lunch. Phil rested 2 – 4.15 on new garden chair outside. Read “Bee Lore” book and sewed. Odd. Tea. Got lilac and did little painting on beehive. Phil painted it. Got flowers. After dinner in garden till 8.45. Phil gave himself injection (no fire in room). Alys Phoned and Baby’s name decided on – JAMES FARADAY BERRY.

Phil’s coaches came. I busy doing flowers a good deal of day. Also oats. Phil painted hive. 2nd coat. Wrote Doz at 6.45. Alys and Dennis came in Lincoln Zephyr with Scotty and Bimbo (me: new name rather than Kimbo?) All in garden and Scotty wildly happy. In sitting-room and garden after dinner. Alys and I to see cactus (not out yet). All to bed 10.15 or so.

About in garden. Turf-buying still. R.V.R. book present for Poz and Doz. Wrote Doz. Mr Lupston came at 6.45 and helped Phil to artificially swarm his bees into the new hive, until 8 or so. Alys phoned – Phil’s x-ray excellent but he is to see Chandler on 23rd.

Very cold. Rainy.
Poz and I picked flowers. Got “Times”. She discovered American blight on apple trees. Very cool and very heavy showers. Got feet very wet. Bad for bees. Did crossword. Tea indoors. Phoned twice Lois and Alys. All 3 played Pik-a-Styk till 9.30 or so.

Dull.
Phil and Poz to Richmond at 10.30. I did flowers and arranged Lois’ room. At 1.45 I with Blain to Darlington. Met Lois 2.35 (late). Tea indoors. Round gardens and houses. Zeus naughty (chicken). Shut up.

Saturday 19th June 1937

Milder and showers.
Phil drove us all to Richmond. Poz, Lois and I walked round castle and to some shops. Rests in p.m. I wrote Alys and Bank for £10. Talk by Poz to Cooper in view-house about American blight on apple trees. Tea indoors. Scoutmaster and Albert records. Crossword and Phil to bed 10.5! Inoculated himself. Weight 12.9. Gain 2 lbs.

Rain and cold a.m. Fine sunny p.m.

Phil drove us to Greta Bridge and on to Watersmeet; Dairy Bridge (got out, Peel Tower) Over Abbey Bridge, back by Lido and Wycliffe. Lois and I in garden resting 2.30 – 4.15. Lois and Poz did apple tree. I sawing bee feeder, top room. In evening doing day book and Lois’ crossword game. Great Tits left pump nest.

Fine. Warm.
Phil drove us to Barnard Castle, via Winston, Ovington. Poz, Lois and I busy with apple tree blight. Painting with methylated. Lois sketched her room. I wrote K.H.D. Tea in hut. Often with Poz or Lois to see 18 cacti out. Phil once, at 9. Found blackbird’s nest in lamp. To cactus at 10.35.

Very perfect.
Polly and Phil away at 10, in Ford with Blain. Jubilee to London. Lois and I around. Painted house from wood, on wall. Lois moved into big room, cut flowers and did them together. Tea in hut. I painted potting shed. Lois painted from her room. Both for walk towards little quarry.

Wednesday 23rd June 1937

Fine then dull and cooler change of wind.
Walked to Calder Beck by lane and fields. Back at 1.15 exactly (no dogs). After lunch, I helped Blain and Cooper to make pheasant run for 7 little pheasants. Lois wrote and drew indoors. Tea in hut. Lois and I wired up the roof of run – looked at Tits’ nest and blackbirds’ nest. Fire in sitting-room. Did crossword.

Thursday 24th June 1937

Dullish.
Dull, so we didn’t paint. We walked to big quarry and back by East Layton. Zeus shut up for following us on walk. After lunch Lois continued sketch of house and I got Wych Elm petals for ponds. Phil’s pond being cleaned out and 5 fish taken out. Tea in hut. Showed Lois Power House. She packed. Crossword after dinner. Alys phoned about Fiat. Finished it but one word wrong. Turtle-thrill.

Friday 25th June 1937

Dull then fine.
Lois painted 4 post bed in her room. Blain took us to Darlington to Jubilee and Lois off by it (not a silver engine – Cameronian). Back. Did flowers. After lunch, did apple trees for U.S.A. blight. Painted potting shed. At 9.35 or so Dennis and Phil came. Blain with Armstrong met them. He had to go back as 101 goldfish arrived. Phone to say so. Dennis put them into the ponds at 11 p.m. To see cactus (1) too

Saturday 26th June 1937

Very perfect. Hot sun.
To see fish. All alive. Excitement about a swarm of bees on garage chimney. Dennis rested in p.m. but worked in rock garden a lot, rest of day. Tea in hut. All out after dinner sitting by bamboo and watching new fish.

Very perfect. Hot sun, breeze.
1st green peas and strawberries.
Dennis all day working at boggeries and rock-garden and in ponds in high boots. I helped a bit. Phil to bees and in top room unpacking and inventorying tools. All of us resting in p.m. Again on rock-garden, after tea in hut and up in bedroom at 9.30. Phil to bed. 1 more cactus.

Monday 28th June 1937

Cool. Windy.
Dennis off at 10 in Armstrong with Blain. Did flowers. Watered plants Dennis had put in. Opened both bee-hives with Phil and Blain. Phil destroyed Queen cells, leaving one. Sat in bedroom. Read papers. Listened-in news (Scotch terrier and Nicholas). (Phil had horrid little spots on leg).

Fine, Cool wind. Hot sun.
Wrote Poz and Lois. Did flowers. At 12.15 came Bunny Baker and Ruth, his wife. Round garden and houses. Lunch. Bunny rested in garden. I round about with Mrs Baker. Mr Bartholomew (vet) came; saw Zeus and Ozzy (invitation). Tea in hut. Bakers left 5.30. Phil and I by ponds. I watered plants. In bedroom. Chaffinch there. To bed 11 or past.

In top room. Putting photo of Coronation in frame. Did Zeus with paste stuff. Began “German Spy” Bernard Newman. Tea in hut. Phil only as far as pond, as spots on leg sore. Early to bed (Phil). Alys phoned at 8.30 to say coming for weekend.

All a.m. doing flowers and saw partridge sitting and thrush. Phil in hat all a.m. as spots sore. Down by pond watering. After tea in top room. Phil soldering. I helped. In bedroom by 8.30.

Warm. Dull.
Did flowers. I made wedges for window blinds. Little thrushes dead. Phil in but most of day spots still sore. Flies bad. Did crossword and knitted in hut after tea. Phil no appetite at dinner. By pond after and Dennis and Alys arrived by Jubilee. Upstairs talking till 10.35. 4 cactus out.

Warm. Dull.
Wandering about and in top room with Alys and Phil. In p.m. helped Alys to tidy cupboards in “office” room. Alys mouth very sore. No plate in lower. Phil with us, as far as greenhouses and to see 14 cacti out. His spots (shingles, said Dennis?) Slightly better.

Thunderstorm in p.m.
Gardening with Dennis and about with Alys. All to bees and pheasants. Muggy. Deluge of rain. Ponds overflowed and fish in bulbous pond. Mollie and Pat Hadow to tea and supper. Alys and Dennis away in Armstrong at 5.15 for 6 train. Hadows away at 9. Phil to bed then.

Phil drove us to Richmond. Both had hair cut. I at Enid Hawson 1/- and shopped. Did flowers. Rested and read papers. After tea, (in hut), up in top room, very busy. After dinner too undoing new drill from Bond’s. Phil to bed about 9. Blain looking up cars for me.

In top room with Phil. He doing tender, soldering. I doing blind wedges. After lunch, I to take Mrs Blain frock and fetch Times. Knitted Teddy’s sock. Wrote Alys. In top room with Phil, but chiefly knitting there. In garden after dinner and Phil to bed 8.45. Knitted all evening. Talked about cars.

Warm and chiefly fine.
Phil wrote Dennis and read papers about estate. I knitted. Out in Ford with Phil to East Layton to register papers to Dennis. After lunch, I finished off Teddy’s sock and did up the pair, with a pair from Jimmie and sent off by post for Teddy’s birthday. In top room and also Phil painted croquet stick. Picked flowers. Expected Austin 10 1933 £57. Didn’t come.

Dull. Cool. Rain in evening.
Phil ,Blain and I to Darlington to Haughton’s and tried Ford 8. I drove partly home in it. Decided to buy it and phoned when got back. Wrote Alys. Picked flowers. Tried to mend Dennis’ rubber boots with rubber solution. Upstairs at 8.45. Phil looking at old papers of family. Didn’t change.

Mitch phoned, also Haughton’s. I did flowers a bit. Wrote Ethel Miles and Ella. At 2 p.m. we brought BHN 545 my Ford 8. Arranged insurance, tax. Mitch came about 3.20. In top room with Phil and tea up there. I in my car, reversing. After dinner, Phil and I and 2 dogs in my car to Kirland’s. Filled up. Alys, Dennis and Dorothy came by Jubilee. Zeus killed a rabbit.

Fine then rain and cold.
All in garage to inspect my new Ford 8. Dennis drove it, with Phil a little. Phil took Dox and me to Richmond in it. Shopped – cheese. Homel in p.m. rests and Alys and I had long talk. Tea in dining-room. Very cold. Alys and Dennis billiards in evening. Doz, Phil and I played pyk-a-styk.

In garden. Alys took Doz and me in Phil’s car to Marske and on moor above Helwith. In p.m. Alys and I talked a bit. Doz (canvas work) in garden. After tea, outdoors. I croquet with Alys. Doz with Dennis in rock garden. I drove to East Layton alone and with Alys and Phil, Alys driving. Later, I took Dennis to East Layton. In garden in evening. First raspberries.

Hot. Tiring.
Dennis, Alys and Doz away in Jubilee. Charles Mitchell to tea. Phil very tired. Blain and I to Richmond in p.m. I drove there; he back (in my car). To goods station. Took crate (broken). Bought wire for baby’s cage. I got watering can 3.9. Dressed Phil’s spot. Ilon salve. Early to bed.

Blain to York. Did flowers a little. No queen in old hive. I drove Mrs Cooper into Richmond to Bank and she to dentist. Got book file 3.9 for Phil. Wrote Alys. Practiced hill-starting later and Phil gave me a lesson. Phil early to bed. Sat in his room till 10.30.

Very hot all day.
To fetch Times in car. Not there. Helped Phil and Blain with bees. Read “German Spy” in p.m. Phil on lawn. After tea he cleaned croquet hoops and I painted them white. Phil and I in my car to test steering. Little way. Soldiers camping and manoeuvres in evening, here. Alys phoned 10 p.m. Eva 101 temperature. No one coming at weekend.

Dull. Rain in p.m.
Helped Blain to make wire cage for Baby’s pram. Dennis sent plan of estates to be filled in. Mrs Cooper to Darlington. I helped Blain again until 3.30. Then in my car to take parcel to post at East Layton and on round Forcett Park. Tea indoors. In top room; I trying to make holes for dyes with drill. Upstairs at 8.15. Knitting and reading. Still dressing Phil’s spot twice daily.

Fine and hot.
Helped Phil and Blain with putting new brood in old hive. Did up engine and Phil and I in his car to Richmond to post it and get things. I in my car to Caldwell and Hutton Magna. Phil wrote about railway coaches wrong gauges. He and I to get wild geraniums in my car. Phil took dogs in field and rabbit killed in garden. Alys phoned from Chelsea at 9 saying I must stay on till Monday a.m.

Very hot. Sunny a.m.
I painted the house (begun when Lois here). Phil on couch by pond. After lunch, I drove to Darlington and back (for practise to meet Alys tomorrow) via Melsomby. After tea, in top room, and misery of Phil at engine safety valve being wrong. Ozzy queer and uneasy after dinner. Alys and Dennis phoned at 9.15. Eva breast abscess; great pain. Alys not coming. Should Phil and I go to Bamboro. They phoned again and we said not.

Fine. Hot. Dullish. Fine in evening. Sun.
Picked sweet-peas and roses. In car to get petrol, near Smallways. Back through Gayle. In p.m. to Richmond to fetch letters and posted sputum. After tea, up by bees and after dinner man came about taking the shooting. Phil saw him. Alys phoned 8.15. Eva no better 101 and 102 always. Dennis wrote to Trotter.

Dry dressing on Phil’s spot. His sting, on nose, swollen up. I picked roses and pinks. After lunch talked Mrs Blain; took car to Richmond. Changed wool. Got Condition Powder, Ozzie. Ordered tubing (Phil). Phil resting most of day as sting and injection (Sunday) up. Temp 98. Dennis rang up and talked to Phil 8.30.

Phil and Blain opened both hives. I helped. Took out 1st sealed comb. Left it in top. This was after teal as it rained all a.m. and Phil and I in top room. I made 2 more blind guides for windows. Picked masses of stocks and antirrhinums after tea. Waited in dining-room (fire) till 9.35 but no phone from London (Eva having operation 9.30).

To Richmond with Phil. He had hair cut. Letter from Alys saying Eva to have abscess opened 21st 9.30 p.m. Rested outdoors. In p.m. I took parcel of peas and beans to East Layton to post 8d. Back by Melsomby and Street. Alys phoned 4.15. Eva had abscess opened – 3 cuts. Terrible pain till 1 a.m. Phil took honey-comb from hive and we posted it to Eva at East Layton with letter from Phil. Picked antirrhinums. Phil to bed 8.40.

Fine a.m. Rain p.m.
Long time with Phil packing up railway coaches to return to Ealing man. Wrote Alys. Read “Wild Strawberries”. After tea, Phil and I in my car to Ravensworth to take parcels. On over 15 lbs so back and divided and di up and took for 5.30 post. In top room. After dinner sat (with fire) till 9.40 in sitting-room, but no phone about Eva.

To Darlington with Phil in his car. He to Dr Fothergill for x-ray. I shopped. Back at 12.35. In p.m. rested picked flowers. Sewed. Phil felt tired and neither of us much appetite. Phil to bed at 8.15. Dennis rang up and I had 12 or 15 minutes talk with him and Alys. Eva better. I heard Baby cry on phone! Fire in bedroom.

Phil rested under Wellingtonia all day. I painted house (1st time since?) In p.m. Dennis phoned asking us to come tomorrow. Phil phoned Darlington station. I to Richmond. Saving soap and sent off peas and beans. After tea, I packed. Doris packed Phil’s case. Phil to bed 9.10. I to bed at 10.50 (read paper to Phil).

Mild. Dull.
Phil drove us to Jubilee (Blain in car). Phil and I by 10.41 Jubilee to King’s Cross. Lunch on train. Dennis and Alys met us. Dennis took me to 48 Cambridge Terrace and Phil to Bulstrode House to sleep and breakfast only. I got Mrs Harvey and then at 5 to 4 Cambridge Gate. Saw James! Aged 7 ½ weeks. Back to supper at home.

At 10.30 along to 4 Cambridge Gate. Sat with Eva. Teddy out all day house-hunting at Orpington. Kit called for me and I to lunch with her and Barbara at 71. Then Kit took me back to 4 Cambridge Gate. I to Mr Doherty’s who said teeth all right. Dennis, Alys and Phil dined at the Bath Club. I dined with Teddy and “Sister” at 4 Cambridge Gate. Eva in bed. Saw James having his bottle at 10. Did crosswords. Home 10.45.

Out to shops and missed Alys. To 4 Cambridge Gate and sat with Eva and Teddy a bit. Alys in and Phil, I with Alys to shops and we had lunch in Park (road). To Lab. Saw new room. Phil having lunch there. Home. To Lilian at 4. Hair done. Home. Arranged paints. Sewed. Supper. Phoned Menie and Sissie. Row at 4 Cambridge Gate this evening.

Dull.
Mrs Harvey stayed on till 12 or so. Teddy phoned twice. Alys came for me in Austin. To 4 Cambridge Gate, then Alys took me R.A. and I in to see Alan’s picture. Hurried lunch at Milk-bar. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Teddy and I drove to Orpington and Chelsfield to look at house – Green Boughs. Mr Sheppard gave us tea. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate by 7. Then I home in Austin – Alys took me. Boiled egg, packed suitcase. Alys phoned about calling for me, and I talked to Phil about crossword.

Dull but fine later.
Teddy called for me at 10.45. Mrs Harvey earlier. To 4 Cambridge Gate. At about 12, Dennis, Phil, Teddy and I off in Lincoln Zephyr. Lunch on black and white bridge. Called on the Bunny Bakers at Shepreth, Mill House. On, Teddy driving too fast, then too slow and we arrived Layton at 8. Scotty and Kimbo we called for from Driver’s on way. Scotty in carpenter shop as on heat. Phil told me of row on 29th in his bedroom!

Kimbo had fit (?), but vet said Hysteria, when we eventually got him in evening. All in garden by pools. Phil rested there. Teddy and I in my car took Scotty out. Rests in p.m. Tea 4. In hut. The 3 men out to get weed and took Scotty. Phoned Alys. Watered plants. Dennis and Teddy billiards in evening. Teddy caught the bitterlings.

Teddy and I took Scotty out in my car. Teddy got weed. All of us by ponds all day. Phil resting there. Tea in hut. Mollie and Pat Hadow for tea and supper. All out to field in 2 cars for weed. Maids to Gala Dance at Gilling. Dennis phoned Alys, but she out.

Very very hot and fine.
Kimbo had another hysteria fit at 9 a.m. Teddy wasp accident in bed!. Teddy and Phil saw about pig-place for Kimbo and took Scotty out. Dennis in pond. Leech on toe! At 2.30 Dennis and Teddy away in Lincoln Zephyr. Phil and I rested on lower lawn. Out in his car a little round after tea. Fed fishes, watered plants. I in my car a little round. Took Scotty and Kimbo little run. Phoned Whitby Hotels.

Cool and misty, thunder in p.m. and hot.
Lengthened Phil’s bee-veil. Helped Phil and Blain with hives. Blain took out grate in sitting-room. I took Scotty and Kimbo out. Wrote Sissie. Wire from Alys “all coming Friday”. In p.m. watched fish a lot, mirror carp appeared!! Picked sweet-peas. Took little dogs out. Alys phoned 7.30.

Very hot day.
Mason came for grates. He and Blain to Richmond for quorls? Phil and I to Darlington for stain and oats. Scotty swelled paw. I to Richmond in p.m. Chemist’s and dishes for dogs. Picked antihistamines. Very hot. Mason finished sitting-room grate. Began bedroom. Arranged some flowers.

Friday 6th August 1937

Hot.
Phil up to breakfast 8.30. Mason 8.30 to do fire place. Took little dogs out – too hot for flowers. Teddy arrived in his Ford at about 7 with luggage, pram, cradle. He lay in garden with Phil and at 8.45. Dennis. Alys, Eva, Nurse Caulit and Baby James came in Lincoln Zephyr. Alys put dry dressing on Eva who went straight to bed.

Hot and fine.
Eva in bed to breakfast. After Alys irrigated her 3 wounds. Baby out in garden most of day. Alys to Richmond with Phil, and after tea to little ruined church with him. Dennis and Teddy watching fish all day. I took nurse round gardens. Golf-croquet with Dennis and Teddy. Dennis and Teddy billiards in evening. I watched Alys do Eva’s irrigation again.

All day about garden (Phil in orchard on lilo and rug).   Alys did Eva’s irrigation dressing. Dennis and I looking on. At dinner “Are you sure?” Dennis and Alys away at 2.30 in Lincoln Zephyr. Read in garden. I to Forcett to post letter to Sissie and Nurses. After supper, played Pyk-a-Styk. I did dry dressing on Eva’s breast at 9.20.

Teddy away at 10 o’clock in Ford. Then I did Eva’s irrigation. And took nurse to Richmond at 12. Phil lighted new fireplace in sitting-room. 1st time. After lunch, did flowers. Eva and Nurse rested. Jimmie by front door. Phil to meet Alys by 5.38. Darlington. After dinner Alys did Eva’s irrigation. Crossness (me).

Dull, some sun.
Sat and knitted outside. Eva did Teddy’s coat pocket. After lunch, Alys and I to Richmond. I drove. Puncture. Got garage man to change wheel. Joined A.A. with A.A. Scout. Home to tea late. Eva and Phil in Phil’s car. Helped Phil to get crate of combs from hive. All and nurse played Pyk-a-Styk in evening.

Wednesday 11th August 1937

Warm and fine.
In garden sewing Jimmie’s short flannel petti and my blue cotton coat. Phil, all a.m. taking 2 bee-hives up to the heather, with Blain, Binks and Smith (Armstrong and trailer). Sewed in p.m. too, with Alys and Baby asleep. After tea, Phil drove Alys and me up to see bees. Many had flown home. Alys and Eva slept together and had Jimmie all night to give nurse sleep.

Muggy, thundery. Rain in p.m.
Spence’s man came about Cozy stoves. Alys and Phil to Richmond to speak about “Times” to bus-owner. Eva and I sewing in garden. Hot. Dull.
Men putting in 2 Cosy stoves all day. Did oats. Wrote Doz. I with Phil to fetch weed and we prepared tank for little fish. Phil rested in orchard in p.m. Alys drove Eva, Jaimie and Nurse to Richmond for James to be weighed. Expecting Mrs Whittaker, who didn’t come. Did flowers. Phil and Blain took box-hive to heather at 8.30 but only two bees in it.

Rainy all day.
Out getting flowers. Baby out in rain in pram by garden porch. Phil in hut. Dennis and Mink Goldrich arrived in Lincoln Zephyr at about 7 o’clock. Mink gave presents all round.

Fine, day warm.
(Jimmie short coated. Sneezed with a wheeze. Dennis anxious). Dennis putting in new rock plants all day. I doing flowers and saw Eva giving Jimmie his bottle. Read “Gone with the Wind” a bit. To Forcett with letters and took Nurse at 3.20 service going on in chapel room. “Are You Sure?” at supper-time. Eva redness on breast. Dennis looked at it.

Rainy, cool.
Phil and Mink to Richmond. Hair cut and Bank. Alys and Eva to Richmond later to shop. I did flowers. Dr Woodsent to see James and Eva. James’ chest ok. Eva’s breast not good. After tea, Alys and I to Richmond for Glauber’s Salts for saturate solution. Men came to offer £35,000 for Layton Estate. Dennis and Mink billiards in evening.

Alys took Nurse to Howtown to see Lakes, 11 till 5.30. I helped Eva with Baby. He slept all a.m. 2 o’clock bottle and upset as table gave way! Sterilized 2nd bottle on Phil’s primus. Phyllis and Rodney Gollants came to tea. Phil and Eva to Richmond to send plants to Baker’s. Alys with Mink in Lincoln Zephyr to Darlington. I purchased tyre by garage at 6.45.

Heavy showers in p.m.
Doing flowers all a.m. Dennis chipping cement from top pond. Men beginning to get leaning tree down. Alys and Eva to Dr Woodsend’s and on to Hadow’s caravan to tea, in my car. Baby smiled at me (just)! Phil cutting nettles. Dennis and Phil billiards in evening.

Fine then dull rain.
Leaning tree pulled down. We diverted “Traffic” from road. Baby smiled twice. Eva and I to Richmond in my car. Shopped. In p.m. Mrs Higham and John (vicar’s wife Gilling) to tea. After tea, I to Richmond alone for oil (for pram) and varnish. Rained coming home. Changed my clothes to Eva’s room. Pheasants set free. Wrote Doz.

Did flowers in a.m. Alys and Mink in Zephyr to Darlington to lunch and to meet “Matron” Phillips (Pippa) by 2.20. I to get Times in car with little dogs and back by East Layton. Talked to Miss Green of White House. Looked after baby all p.m. by office door. Dennis and Phil billiards in evening. Nurse’s nose bled. Baby vaccinated by Dennis 10.30.

Dull.
Alys and Matron to Richmond in my car. Matron not pleased with Eva’s breast lump. I unpicked Eva’s sleeve and did alterations on evening coat. In p.m. Alys and I wheeled Baby to get Times, and all about. Mr Holmes and Anne to tea (about letting Hardy’s house). Matron made many tailed bandage for Eva and dressed her breast/ Much more pus out. Phil tired, and us billiards. I early to bed.

Sultry.
(Write Doz, Kitty, Mrs Harvey). Matron bathed Eva; she advised operation and it was decided Eva and I go to London with her. I sat with James in garden. He wakeful. In p.m. I with nurse to Richmond. Shopped. She round castle. In p.m. the others played Pyk-a-Styk. Matron phoned Bulstrode; Dennis phoned Tim Flew and Heanley’s (Eva rather upset in bedroom).

Walked to 4 Cambridge Gate and met Teddy. He took me home in car, via Kodak’s and Bell & Croydon’s. Lunch. Rest. To Bulstrode 4.30. Eva “came to” at 4.20. Not in pain, but felt sick. Sat with her (she turned round in bed – foot to head) till 6.15 when Teddy came. Home, after shops for food. Supper at Hales’. To Eva at 7.45. Sat with her (phoned Alys 7, but she in bath at Layton). Alys phoned Eva 9.15. Dr Heanley in 9. Eva told Alys operation over. Eva knitting and feeling quite fairly alright. Home 10.30.

Phil up in after rest. He and Dennis back by Jubilee to Layton. Also Carol Barton with them. Supper at Hales. Back to Eva, by bus at 8, as Teddy to sherry party with McNalty’s. Home 10.

To Stagg’s about hat. Times Library for book. Drove to Eva. She out in car (she drove) to Heath. Sat there 1 ½ hours. Virginia, Tessa and Gay there. I lunch Y.W.C.A. Then home in car. Mrs Harvey at 2.15. Ironed Eva’s nightgown. To her at 4.15. Teddy at 7. I drove home to supper. Bus to Eva at 7.45, as Teddy to theatre with McNalty’s. Sister Bailey bandaged Eva again as uncomfy.

Drove to filling station and got petrol 6.4. To Bulstrode House. With Eva to Heath again (I drove into Park). Sat till 12.15. Back to Bulstrode House. I to Y.W.C.A. (walked home). Busy all p.m. altering brown frock collar. Supper at home. To Queens Theatre 8. Dress rehearsal Gielgud’s production Richard II. Very long. Ended 11.20. Bus home.

Did oats. Cut out and machined and ironed brown chiffon coatee. To Bulstrode at 6.30. Eva and Teddy back from “Green Boughs”!!! To Lyons for supper. Evening with Eva and drove home 9.30. 1st time in dark!!

To Boots’ and then 48 Cambridge Terrace. Mrs Harvey there. Rested. To Bulstrode at 4.30. Out to Paul Roche for supper. Stayed till 9.35 as Teddy on duty. Drove home. Copied Eva’s letter to charwoman.

Back to Bulstrode, got Ford and in it to 48 Cambridge Terrace, at 2 p.m. Lunch. Man to see Ascot heater. Drove to Eva. Sat and finished her coat alteration. Home 8.15 by bus, left Ford for Teddy (on 8th). Supper. Hales and ice.

Phil in bed to breakfast (bad night). Dennis numb hand? Stroke? Dr Hales and girl appeared. Teddy to Forcett. Dick and Carol read but Dick to Richmond and Raby Castle with Alys in Lincoln Zephyr. Phil in bed all day. We packed. I put netting for leaves. Carol and Dick Slosh, after tea, and again after dinner with Dennis and Teddy. Jigsaw too.

Breakfast 8. Phil up to breakfast. Teddy drove Armstrong with trailer for luggage, pram. To Darlington and Carol, Olive and me. Teddy, Carol and I by Jubilee to King’s Cross. Lunch 2/6 ones. Olive by 11.33. Teddy took me to 48 Cambridge Terrace in Ford; he met Olive 4.15. Dennis with Eva, James, Nurse and Dick Cave in Lincoln Zephyr to London; also Alys and Phil in Ford 10. All arrived about 7.20. I to Hales at 8.30 for supper. Eva and Teddy slept 34 Southwick Street. Dined Cambridge Gate.

Alys phoned, so I got sausages and bacon on way to 4 Cambridge Gate. (Teddy and Eva there, and then to Chelsfield all day). Out with Alys in Austin to move Teddy and Eva’s cases to 61 Gloucester Terrace (Mrs Smalley’s). Lunch 4 Cambridge Gate with Alys, Phil and Nurse. Took dogs out. Dennis rang up at 2.40. Walsh’s report good (not a stroke but pulled a nerve brachial plexus). Alys to have hair done. I with Phil and mended his trousers. And James. Nurse and James out 4.30 – 6. Sambo dined 4 Cambridge Gate and saw Eva 9. I supper Y.W.C.A. Home with Eva and Teddy and took Ford to my Terrace.

Eva and Teddy at 9.30 to me and took me in Ford and to 4 Cambridge Gate. Alys dressed Eva’s breast. She packed, and at about 12 off with Phil in Ford 10 (to Wiltshire and Devon). I to shops, leaving Austin in Regents Park. Lunch with nurse; read. Wrote Doz letter-card and Cooper about Modern range. Took dogs to Park in Austin. Eva and Teddy in at 8.30 and of us to Bulstrode. Eva dressed by Sister Bailey. Home in Ford.

Took Ford to 61 Gloucester Terrace 9.30. All to 4 Cambridge Gate. Eva and I in Austin. 11.45 to Bulstrode House. I on in rain to Selfridge’s. Got black waterproof cape, and oats. Walked to 4 Cambridge Gate. Teddy to look at furniture in pm. Nurse out at 2 till 9.30. Eva gave bottles to James. Eva and Teddy to Lewis’ 4.45 bought furniture. Eva put James to bed 6. Dennis in 7.30. All 4 of us dined. Dennis dressed Eva’s wound 9. All in Ford to homes at 9.50.

Met Teddy and Marion there – got Eva back with me to 4 Cambridge Gate (after Abbey, registry). Teddy and Marion to Green Boughs. Took dogs out. Eva on Alys’ bed in p.m. I on sofa then took James in pram in Park 3.30. Nurse came 3.50. Teddy and Marion at 7.15. All had dinner. I back with Teddy and Eva in Ford, and took it back at 10.40. Dennis dressed Eva at 9.

All had dinner 1. Nurse out 2 – 10. Rests then Teddy and Eva and James and dogs to see Mr Berry. Back late to tea. Baby’s washing and bottle 6. Very good supper. “Are you sure?” Olive out with Bessie. Teddy to Bridge Club. Eva and James home in Ford. Teddy took Austin. I home 10.35.

After lunch, drove Austin to 48 Cambridge Terrace. Changed cheque and to Bulstrode Street, parked. To Selfridge’s – dog foods. Tea. James out in Park. Men took Berry furniture away. I to Albany Street and out with dogs. Teddy and Eva to cocktails – Ackerman. Dennis ciné film in evening of James.

Took dogs in park in a.m. To 61 Gloucester Terrace in Ford. Teddy and Eva in. Picked up Austin at 48 Cambridge Terrace (Teddy had it last night). Filled up. To 4 Cambridge Gated. I to High Street shops with Austin. Teddy and Eva to shops (hat, shoes bought). All in to lunch. James a bit sick after, on my skirt. I took Olive to City St Paul’s. Sundaes Lyons. Eva and Teddy to Buchanan’s cocktail part, Quebec Street. Mink to dinner and ciné film of Baby after. Phil phoned from Woolacombe Bay Hotel. Back with Berry’s at 10.30. Took Ford back.

Called for Eva and Teddy at 9.30 in Ford. They took books, clothes to Chelsfield. I in Austin in Park, brakes done, but unsafe. To High Street. Dogs in Park. Lunch. Nurse out at 2.30. Wrote Alys. Tea 4. I took Jimmie in pram 4.30 – 5.35 in Park. Eva back by train so took James at 5.45. Teddy only back at 8.30. We began dinner. Dennis in at 8.10. Back at 10.10 to rooms. I home 10.15.

Took Ford to fetch Teddy and Eva 9.30. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Eva to Lab for bloodcount. I shopped. Back and then to my Bank before noon, by tube. After lunch, I took dogs out. Kit to tea, with Dennis, James and me. Dennis and I dined 8 but Teddy, Eva and Marion only in at 9.40 to dinner as had to wait for furniture to arrive Green Boughs.

Teddy from Reynold’s Close to dinner. “Are you sure?” after. At 3, I with Teddy in Ford and Dennis and Eva to Chelsfield with lots of luggage. Tea at Green Boughs. Dennis and I and Kimbo to supper 4 Cambridge Gate. Left Eva and Teddy and Scotty there. Their 1st night. Bus to 48 Cambridge Terrace as back lamp out.

Bus to 4 Cambridge Gate. To shops. To Strand and Fleet Street to see Austrian Agency, Kent Messenger. Lunch (James slept till 1.50!). In Austin to 26 Compayne with sheets (borrowed) and Kimbo, on Primrose Hill. Dennis in 8.30 to dinner. Left at 9.45. Got Austin from Mostyn and drove home by Marylebone Road.

Drove to 4 Cambridge Gate by Marylebone Road and Baker Street. Eva came up with Scotty. She tired, so I out to shops and back; and to Lab for lunch with Dennis and read him the Log and then posted it off. Nurse out. Jimmie slept on till 4.15. Eva undressed him at 6. Dennis in at 7.20. Florence out. Eva and I to 48 Cambridge Terrace at 10.30 and she slept in my room and had bath.

Up 7.20. Folded cam bed. To Dairy and Bank. To 4 Cambridge Gate by 9.30 (in Austin). Dennis away 10 and going to Woolacombe at 3 p.m. I to Ministry of Labour about permit for Eva’s Swiss maid. To Austria Agency. To Woolworth’s (collar, Kimbo). Lunch, with Nurse. She out 2.20. Baby woke 3.30. Took him out in pram, with Kimbo 4.15 – 5.30. Nurse back 5.30 (her hair done). Quiet evening and to bed in Alys’ bed at 10.10. Rang up Alys at 8.45.

Very warm. Fine.
In car to shops. Times and to 48 Cambridge Terrace to get clothes and opera-glass. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Lunch and then to Embassy Theatre by busses (afraid of parking car). Saw “The Day Has Gone”. Good. Back. Wit James a bit. To King’s Cross (Olive too) to send off empties to Layton at 6. 1/1d. More grapes arrived. Dinner with nurse. Read. Clocks put back an hour. Held James at 9.45. Sweet. 17 weeks old.

Got clothes. Back. Lunch. Out to try for a theatre but all full. Wrote Aunt Bella. Took Olive in car and posted Eva’s dressing-gown and jig-saws to Roly. Dennis in 7.50. Very tired. Scallops and beer. Phoned Alys and Eva.

Eva phoned about Kehdri. With Dennis in Austin. To shops; home. Took Kimbo out, Primrose Hill. On to Church Row. With Elsa 30 minutes. Home. Packed, darned. Tea. At 5.45 Dennis came in Lincoln Zephyr and we off. Dusk. At Woolhampton, Near Newbury, Angel Inn had bacon and eggs at 7.45. On and on. Barnstaple, chocolate biscuits at 11. Finally arrived at Woolacombe at 2 a.m. Alys at gate (!) of Enfield House with torch.

Saturday 9th October 1937

Perfect day.

Sat in garden. To old Farm. Got Phil’s car. He and Dennis drove and to sands and rocks. Back. All in garden. Phil too, lying down. Hot sun. After lunch, all of us on beds. Slept soundly. Teea. All in Lincoln Zephyr to Ilfracombe and bought lobsters. Jig-saw puzzle. To bed very early.

Started at about 10.30. I in Phil’s car, he driving. Alys and Dennis in Lincoln Zephyr to Lynton, Lynmouth, Porlock, Minehead. Alys and I in Phil’s car later, on to Lunch. Phil had bedroom for rest. We had lovely lounge upstairs. After tea, on to Marlborough where dined and slept at Castle & Ball Hotel. Good. Sitting-room to ourselves.

Perfect day.
Breakfast 9 then I with Dennis and Alys with Phil (he driving) off, through Savernak, Devizes and Newbury. Alys and Phil changed plans and she and I in othere car to 4 Cambridge Gate. 12.35. Lunch. Alys and I to High Street and took Kimbo to Park for walk. Phil resting. Tea. Dinner. Dennis very stiff but showed newest film of James Berry.

To shops with Alys. She wrote Dr Chandler. Phil drove to Lab in Austin at 1 and I took car back. Lunch with Alys and Phil with Dennis at Lab and he to Aymer 2, and Chandler 2.30. Alys to talk to Chandler at 2 and later met Phil, with Austin. Phil had tea with us and then to bed as ordered. Dennis had his Meeting about advertising B.M.A. Dinner, and all in Phil’s room after. Listened-in to Fitzsimmons. Boxing.

Breakfast 8. Dennis out 9. To High Street in Austin and to 25A Crawford Street to Austin’s with chair. Back. Walked to meet Doz at 47 Wimpole Street. Doris and Helen there too. Walked to 4 Cambridge Gate with Doz. She lunched with Alys and me, and sat with Phil . At 2.30, I in Austin to 48 Cambridge Terrace to get coat, knitting then took Kimbo out in Park. Alys out to Selfridge’s. Eva phoned saying she and baby could go too, the Amamann. Did jigsaw with Phil.

On car to shops, took back Bath Chap to Sainsbury’s. Took Kimbo out. Alys and Olive lunch early and Alys took Olive to King’s Cross and Olive off by 1.20 to Darlington. I with Phil. Took his lunch up. Florence giddy and to rest. Alys to have haird done and met Kit. Dennis phoned. Phil’s sputum negative. Washed up. Sat in Phil’s room. Florence better and cooked dinner. Steel Puzzle and cross-word in evening in Phil’s room.

Otto phoned, so Alys and I phoned all round asking people; Lois, Doris. Finally Denis sent Miss Gray round to tea. James Campbell rang up and came 5 – 8.15. Otto at 4.30 and left about 5.5. Dennis to Pen Club dinner at Professor Yetts’ at Pagani’s (Trappist nuns).

Alys moved into my room (Eva’s old room); so aired drawing-room. Phil got up to tea. I out in Austin to Golders Green and back to help battery. Phil in drawing-room and we did crossword (Times) and he finished it! Phil, Dennis and I dinner. Dennis telling about Dolly and the Isabella Waterlow box in Bank. Alys dinner in bedroom. Phil to bed 9. Dennis read more Genesis aloud. I slept in drawing-room.

Alys to High Street. I started Austin easily. I with Phil. Alys to see Dr Chandler. At 12.25, I to National Liberal Club; lunch with Jim Archer and Frank. Walked to Carlton Cinema – saw “Zola”. Paul Muni. Very good. Walked back to National Liberal Club with Jim and had tea. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Nancy Carr at 6.30 to see Phil and to dinner. All up in Phil’s bedroom. Phil’s sputum nearly negative (little group of T.B). I sewed in p.m. coats. Teddy in to tea and we had it downstairs. Phil alone (Teddy furious). Eva and Teddy away at 5.10. Paul Davis at 6.40, and to dine. We all played letter and spin game in Phil’s room).

(Alys’ remark that Dennis was “so safe” at breakfast). Alys to get Phil’s Christening present for James. I with Phil – crossword and shave. I in p.m. to High Street and 48 Cambridge Terrace for linen for Eva. James to tea and all had it in Phil’s room (when I got back from 48 Cambridge Terrace, Alys told me Dennis’ blood pressure 240. Very dangerously high). Read downstairs and after dinner all in Phil’s room. Listened-in and Dennis did steel ring puzzle. Took Austin to Mostyn’s for cleaning.

I in car to High Street and on to 48 Cambridge Terrace. Got bread, butter in. To Bank too. Back. Flowers from Layton. P.m. Alys and I packed Eva’s wedding present glass up to go to Hoults to Layton. To High Street in car at 3.40. I drove round Park to get battery charged. After tea, (shrimps – Dennis in Phil’s room) Alys and I took boxes to King’s Cross. Dennis read Genesis aloud in evening. Finished it.

Painted “Glass” on cases and we did up more things in boxes. Packed up. I with Dennis to 48 Cambridge Terrace taking suitcase and to Bulstrode. Mrs McNalty called and stayed lunch. Phil started the “Queen Mary” model. Dennis to Chelsfield and back at 6.15 with Jimmy and Nannie (Bell) and thin luggage. Tony Wilson to supper. Laughton’s called very unopportunely. “Are you Sure?” in Phil’s room with Tony. I home to 48 Cambridge Terrace at 9.40 and slept there.

Alys and I took car to brown garage. Bus to Oxford Street. At 7 Eva and Teddy and Scotty and Kimbo arrived. Dennis in at 8.15 (Phil’s sputum negative). Teddy to Kidbrooke 9.30. Phil to Chandler. I to shops for luggage for Jimmie’s things. I met Eva at Piccadilly. To buy shoes. With Eva and then Selfridge’s and Roger’s. She to Brownlee. Eva to lunch at 4 Cambridge Gate. Tony Wilson took photo of Jimmie. I out with Nurse and Jimmie at 3. She to 47 Wimpole Street for inoculation. I wheeled Jimmie. Tea with Phil. Mr and Mrs Sinclair came (friends of Berry’s) and Helen and Tony and Marion. I to get photos from Mindels and buy hold-all. All in Phil’s room playing game and crossword till 10.10. I back in taxi with Teddy and Eva.

Fine. Sunny. Cold.
Taxi to Norland. On to 4 Cambridge Gate. With Jimmie; and doing up bath holdall. Lunch. At 1.40, Eva, Teddy, Jimmie, Nannie and I in 2 taxis to Waterloo. Mr Berry there; we saw off Berry’s at 2.30 to Southampton. Alys came in Austin but did not see Eva again. I to Handy’s shop and to see Brownlow pictures (horses). Back to tea. James Campbell came. Eva phoned from Southampton at 8.30. I slept at 4 Cambridge Gate.

Very foggy. Not out all day. Dennis to Bulstrode. Phil not very well (depressed). Read “Coming Sir”. Kitty and Edward came to tea. Ed up in Phil’s room, after tea. Talks about moving to flat with lift.

Doris Dent away to Layton (Alys took her to King’s Cross for 11.15?) Phil’s sputum negative. I with Phil, who still depressed, but talked of new engine (coal-fired). Alys, Phil and I looked at flats in p.m. Hermione to tea with Phil. I to R.B.A. Art Club, which didn’t take place; walked back via Chappell’s. Alys and Dennis to meet Olive at 9.50 from Darlington.

With Phil. Then took KImbo in park. Out with Alys to look at lifts. James Campbell with Phil and lunched with us. In p.m. I drove to Embassy: to Kit’s to return Cornin’s book. To Berry’s with gloves for Malcolm. Alys had Mrs Turnbull to tea. I with Phil. Posted letter airmail to Malt. To Ede Snackbar at 7 and Embassy Theatre to see “Cymbeline” (Shaw’s last act). Late back. Bill Cave to dine at 4 Cambridge Gate.

With Phil while Alys to shops. Phil’s sputum negative. Took Kimbo in Park. At 2.30 Alys to see Fletcher about lift and Pearman’s. At 3 I to U.C.H. for Tonks’ Memorial. Lois, Doz, Agatha Shore. Talked to Randolph Schwabe. W.W. Russell. McColl spoke. Tea in Provost’s room. After dinner, Dennis out to Medical Society, but in soon and read Exodus aloud.

Alys out to shops. I with Phil. Man form Benney’s about lift at 2.30. I to Cullen’s for rug materials and on to Sissie’s to tea. Did rug work there. Home at 7.30. Engine and queer tender arrived from Burcot. Olive in bed with bad cold.

Took Kimbo in Park after being with Phil till 12. At 2.30, I motored to 48 Cambridge Terrace to fetch a lot of things. Went via Eywan Road. Harrow Road. Dennis and Alys took engine to Bond’s for testing. Shrimp tea in Phil’s room. Dennis and Alys again at 6 to fetch engine back. Packed it up. Phil hot bath 9.30 as water cold earlier. Max phoned. Elsa had sudden operation. Florence cut her finger badly.

I to tea with Suzie Zileri after posting letters (Eva at Cairo) by airmail and Phil’s to Tozer, about engine. Back at 6.5 and with Phil. Alys and Dennis to Lab to do diphtheria swabs.

Men about lift; discouraging. Phil’s sputum negative. Walked, with Kimbo, to High Street and Times and Woolworth’s. Also bought table-felt 1 ½ yards 19/5. Cayler & Pope. Then with Phil, and Alys out. Alys and I in car to Paddington 2.30; sent off engine. To Bank. Tea. I to R.B.A. Art Club (sailor). Dennis late back. He read Exodus aloud in evening.

Phil won 12/- at Football Pools. Letters from Teddy and Eva from Gibralter. I with Kimbo and car to Selfridge’s (car at Bulstrode). Bought tweed for Dennis’ dressing-gown. Cayler & Pope too. Alys to have hair “permanent” waved at Lilian’s. 2.15. Home at 6. I cut out the dressing-gown on the floor. Dennis late. He read Exodus aloud. I did Kimbo’s mat. We finished crossword.

Letter from Eva, from Malta. Took Kimbo out 10.15. Alys to Army & Navy Stores. I sewed (tacked) dressing-gown. He doing crossword. In p.m. I to 48 Cambridge Terrace in car at 2. Mrs Harvey at 2.30. I machining dressing-gown all p.m. She cleaning. Drove home to 4 Cambridge Gate in dark and rain at 4.30. Mrs Willis and girl came to see Alys. Finished crossword (2nd evening). Rug, and Dennis read “Exodus” aloud in evening.

Alys to shops. I took Kimbo out. Then to fetch sewing machine from 48 Cambridge Terrace and up to Kit’s11.30. Took her to see Dr in Devonshire Place. Alys fetched her and up to lunch with her at 71. I did some hasty and secret work on dressing-gown. Alys in to tea.

Friday 3rd December 1937

Drizzly, colder.
Kit phoned – bad night with pain in hands. So, I to lunch with her. Alys out shopping with car till 1. Then I took it. Stayed at Kit’s till 3.30. Back to tea. Alys out taking cradle to Heanley’s and tea there. Tailor to fit Phil, from Walter’s 5. Dennis phoned 6.30 Phil’s sputum positive. I to dine at Alan’s B’s 8.45. Max Lewis and Edith and Colonel Strong there.   Colonel Strong brought me home in car, at 11.35. Couldn’t complete crossword.

Out with Kimbo. Wire to Tozer about locomotive and on to 48 Cambridge Terrace and bank (closed 12.10) and High Street in car. Phil down to lunch. In p.m. I sewed, machined and ironed dressing-gown very secretly. Alys out to Albany Street in snow. Went on doing dressing-gown after tea. Had bath at 7 (phil at 6.30). George Buchanan to dine and we all in Phil’s room after. News Chronicle questions and twirly game with letters.

Otto, and Mabel to tea in Phil’s room. At 6.15 Dennis and I in car to Kitty’s. Dennis and I put Antiphlogistine on her and got home at 8.30. “Are you Sure? in evening.

Alys out to shops. She in, and I showed her dressing-gown. I took Kimbo in car to Driver’s, Heath Street for de-worming. To Kit’s. Cooked and served her lunch, in bed. Away at 2.40. To Bank. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Put car away. To Lewis’ for cord for dressing-gown. James Campbell to tea. Phil till not feeling cheerful though negative . He did a lot of mat.

Alys not out. I in car to High Street. Kit to Hales – 3 hours. Helen Watson to see Phil 11 (before Varsity Rugger). Phil down to lunch, but no appetite. He and Alys listened-in to Match; I machining in drawing-room. Rev Mr Booth to tea. I with Phil. Alys and Dennis to sherry party at Varvill’s Handy to dinner. No ducks arrived from Layton and no engine.

Phil not feeling well. Tailor to fit him, and he and Alys to Chandler’s 12.45. I to 50 George Street (walked) – Handy’s flat to meet Whiteley’s man, who didn’t come. Back to quick lunch. Back (in car) to 50 George Street. Men at 2.40 (they packed Kath’s things for Salisbury). I to Driver’s to fetch Kimbo 4 in car. Brought him back 12/- fee paid. Gwen and Nancy to tea. I with Phil. Dennis read Kipling’s “Village that Voted the World was Flat” in evening. Late to bed. Phil better.

Dennis and Phil both slept on late. Alys out in car. Phil – negative. I with Phil. Engine arrived from Tozer, Dinckley Court, Burcot. I took Kimbo in Park. Washed chair; back with carpetine. In p.m. Alys and I in car to look at flats – St Edmund’s Court, Over Lords. Put this flat in Folkard’s hands. Phil not very grand. Wrote Carrie Davey and Aunt Bella. Dennis read K.H. letter and the Vortex (Bees) aloud).

Alys out; I with Phil. Did Football Pools. I did Vernon’s. Out with Kimbo and sent them off. After lunch, Phil down in dressing-gown. Alys to meet Susie at Clinic. Then Alys and I to look at flats. Helen Wilson to tea. I out (with her) at 6.45 and I to Snack Bar, Swiss Cottage for supper and on to Embassy to see “The Worm that Turned”. Goolden. Paul Davis to dinner. Home in rain 11.10. Letter from Eva from Cairo.

Alys out; I with Phil and took Kit out 20 minutes. Sewed cord on poclet of dressing-gown. In p.m. Alys and I to look at flats. Cadogan Gardens, Bellmoor. Miss Hughs to tea (knows Pat Embleton in Vancouver). I tea with Phil and then in car to Sherry Party at Lewis Baumer’s. Pelleau there and Madelene Wells and husband. Home 7.20. Football results out. Neither Phil nor I won anything. Phil down to lunch and dinner, though earache and rather depressed. News Chronicle questions.

Phil felt better. He slept on very late. He and Dennis. Worked at then little boats all a.m. I took Kimbo long walk in Park. Phil down to dinner. Alys and I in drawing-room after. Alys sending off photos of Berry’s and told me about Kitty, and Hales. I sewed Dennis’ dressing-gown after tea. Dennis to Bulstrode. Ironed. Finished Kimbo’s mat in evening. We did “Are you Sure?” Phil down to supper. Olive out.

I out in car, left it at Bulstrode. With Kimbo to shops and Selfridge’s in rain. Back at 12.40. Phil down to lunch. I out to do Xmas shopping in Oxford Street 2 – 4.15. Presents and needle for new rug. Began it. Bill Cave to dinner (he had just failed in Law Final).

I out in car with Kim to shops. To Selfridge’s about jug. Gaylor & Pope for green and brown wool and brown. Phil in drawing-room. Fed seagulls. Alys took photos to Reynolds Close and to lunch with Gwen at Green Lizard. Phil and I lunch together. I wrote Eva. Out to Post Office and Blind Institute with Kim. Tea in Phil’s room. Hermione Collard to tea. Sewed dressing-gown. Phil’s negative – though Dennis not telling). Variety in evening. (Olive out to dance in evening).

Phil slept on. I walked via Park to shops with Kimbo and to see Poz at 47 Wimpole Street (Aymer). Back. Phil down (tailor had been). Alarm about kindyes. With Alys to Lab with wine of Phil’s at 2.15 in car. On separately to shops. To Army & Navy Stores and Staines. James Campbell to tea. Sewed Dennis’ dressing-gown. Out with Kimbo. Then in car to get High Street for flowers. To visit Elsa at Hospital of St John’s and St Elizabeth. Out to 48 Cambridge Terrace to get clothes. Back at 1 for lunch. Phil down. Alys and I to Army & Navy Stores after, in car. I got nesting boxes. To Handy’s. Home. Phil on sofa as hot-bottle had leaked. Ironed Alys’ skirts. K.H. letter and U.S. story read aloud by Dennis in evening.

In with Phil. Alys out. Took Kimbo to Post Office, Albany Street and Park 25 minutes. Phil down to lunch. To shops – Bendicks, Bank and walked to Lilian’s. Hair done 3.15. Home at 5. Dennis read Exodus and U.S. story. Runyon in evening. Phil down to dinner too.

Dennis away in car in fog and frost to see “crackers” patient at Guildford and lunch with doctor (Karl’s nephew, Lionel). Phil down most of day to meals and rested in drawing-room. I out with Kimbo at 12.30 in fog – ver cold. Dennis in at 6 or so. Gave him dressing-gown. Read Runyon story and “Are you Sure”. Finished off 2nd mat.

Letter from Eva to Alys. I in car in thick fog then quite clear. To High Street to choose soles. To 48 Cambridge Terrace for fur-coat and snow boots. Phil up. ALys out in car. I ironed backing onto mat. In p.m. to Selfridge’s and bought skirt at C & A’s. Tea. James Campbell came. Alys out to Hope’s again. Dennis in 8.10. Wedding-anniversary. Phil negative. Dennis better. In bed. To High Street in car, shops. Then to Park with Kimbo and Albany Street. Phil to Chandler at 12.30 (Alys and Austin). Dennis in bed all day; we had tea in his room. Otto came and called on Dennis and Phil in Dennis’ bedroom. I packed. Alys out to take duck to Dorrie’s.

Fine, lovely day.
At 9.35, Dennis, Olive and I with Kimbo, in Lincoln Zephyr. Sunny drive. Lunch near Stamford-Grantham. Out doors. Standing. Arrived Layton 4.20. Zeus had fit (excitement and worms). Alys and Phil arrived 5(?). Pullman 11.20 from King’s Cross. Blain met them. Tea, dinner. Phil to bed about 6. In his room. Zeus very restless.

Friday 24th December 1937

Fine a.m. Dull p.m. damp.
Two letters from Eva from Cairo for Alys on 24th. Walked in garden with Dennis and 3 dogs. Phil out at 11.30 too. Sat in sun and in hut. Alys and I to Richmond in my car to buy Xmas cards in p.m. Dennis slept in bedroom. Did up parcels for maids. All in bedrooms after dinner. Phil read Times Knowledge questions.

Saturday 25th December 1937

Very sunny. White frost. Perfect
Zeus worm pill.  Dennis up at 11. We sent presents in to cooper’s and maids. Dennis and I walked round with 3 dogs. Alys and I took presents to Blains and Barbers. Drove to Ravensworth; Alys gave cigarettes and tea, Smiths and Binks. Phil in hut and about in garden in sun. At 3 we listened-in to King George VI (broadcasting 5 minutes). After tea took Phil’s engine (coal-fired) to top room. Xmas dinner. Listened in till 9 then in bedroom and did more of the Times General Knowledge questions. Dennis indigestion.

Dullish. Damp.
Phil not good night. Only up at 12 and in hut. Walked with Dennis and 3 dogs to little quarry. Wrote letters. Max, card, Tony. Out with dogs and in p.m. got car down. Alys and I took letters to Scoth Corner and got petrol at Kirklands. Dennis on bed in p.m. After supper all upstairs. Phil in bed. “Are you Sure?”

Monday 27th December 1937

Dull, misty.
Phil very good night and felt very well. Man (Swindell) about selling land called.  Alys and I got logs down to house and looked at Eva and Teddy’s crates. Brought my 3 rugs down. Dennis not out. Read in his room. Listed Minks’ books (Phil and I) and put them away. I out in car to Forcett and Scotch Corner with letters (no post till 8.30 a.m.) All played Monopoly in evening till 10.15. Dennis and Phil in top room 4.45 – 6.

Dull. Damp.
Alys drove Dennis to Darlington in my car. He by Jubilee to London for Pathological Meetings (or Bacteriologists). Phil up. I got Times, with Zeus. Phil wrote Lucy. At 2.30, I to East Layton, posted letters and book to Roly. Phil and Ays to cellar. Sat in bedroom in evening. Phil to bed about 9. Connie Barber cut hand on scissors.

Wednesday 29th December 1937

Fine and showers.
I drove round by Hutton Magna and got 3 gallons Shell in. In p.m. Alys and I to Richmond, posted furcoat to Huntly. On to Barnard Castle as shops shut in Richmond. Bought fish and worm pills. We 3 played Monopoly in Phil’s room after tea. Blain to meet Dennis in Armstrong, by Jubilee from London.

Thursday 30th December 1937

Cold. Grey.
Gave Kimbo work pills 9 a.m. Zeus ate my kipper. I to Aldboro’ to butchers. Dennis, Alys and Phil to visit Mr Hardy at Richmond. Mr Booth to lunch. I sent Bendick chocs to Lois. Mr Booth stayed till 3.45. Phil down to ponds. Dennis and Phil in top room and Alys and I too at times, after tea and the new coal-fired engine was started! (Tozer’s). Monopoly in Phil’s bedroom. He in bed in evening.

Friday 31st December 1937

Cold and dull.
Dennis colded, so separate to us. I to Aldburgh for liver. Picked up charcoal for engine. Alys and I to Richmond to change whisky and get meth: Settled Dennis into No 2 bedroom (on Berry’s divan bed). Alys and I helped Phil to run engine, up stairs, after tea. After dinner, Phil in bed and we 3 played Monopoly. Zeus had no tea (for worm pill).

Hunt meet at West Layton New Year’s Day.
