Very mild
All out in rain to see big tree felled. Various darts, ping-pong, etc. Windows open in rooms all evening. Up to see Doris and Mrs Dent. Poz and I watched Dennis and Ginx at Splosh. Ginx did tricks in evening. We did lifting, and beer bottle, book. Thought reading.

Wednesday 2nd January 1935

Fine, Very mild.
Dennis, Ginx, Alys, Helen and Tony walked to the Quarry. Poz and I in garden. At 12, Dennis drove Poz, Ginx and me to Richmond. After lunch, knitted and another (larch) tree down. Darts, with Ginx and then with Tony. Dennis and Ginx played Splosh all evening, till 11 p.m.

Thursday 3rd January 1935

Fine.
All out to see tree felled. At 10.45, Phil drove Poz and Ginx to Darlington; they away 11.30. Alys, Helen and Helen Watson to Ravensworth. I wrote letters – Aunt Bella. Bonfire in p.m. and again all out after tea and roasted chestnuts and potatoes in bonfire. Phil played Splosh with Dennis after dinner.

Friday 4th January 1935

Perfect day.
In garden with Eva. Made beds and dusted as Florence ill. Bonfire No 2 with Dennis. Phil drove Helen Watson to Buttertubs. In p.m. Derrick Reid Brown and friend to tea. Eva to meet Teddy at Darlington (5.40). We played “Murders” and “Sardines” in evening. Elsie and Olive waited on us.

Saturday 5th January 1935

Fine on whole.
Olive sore throat. Alys and I in Chrysler to Darlington to see Helen and Tony off at 11.33 (?) Shopped. Phil took Helen Watson in Baby Austin to Tees. Knitted, read and out to bonfire. Up to see Doris. Packed; all of us. In evening waited on selves at dinner. Ping-pong.

Phil and Helen Watson off in Baby Austin at 10 (to Oxford). Chrysler needed mending, so we ate sandwiches in smoking-room, with Debby and Ozzy. Off at 1.30. Coffee in Dukeries. Supper at Swan, Biggleswade. Teddy drove sometimes, but got back-ache. Dropped him at Reynolds Close. Me, at home, at 10.30. (Florence left at Layton with tonsillitis).

Up at 8. Out to buy bread, milk, butter. Unpacked. Florrie to say Mrs Harvey could not come. To Selfridge’s with clock and watch. To lunch at Y.W.C.A. On to 4 Cambridge Gate 1.30. Away at 2.30. Home. Rested, slept. Sewed at pink slip and listened-in by fire in evening.

Black fog. Cold.
Mrs Harvey for 2 hours. I washed things. After lunch at Y.M.C.A, I on to Harrod’s sale, but didn’t buy anything. Tried on several. Home across Park. Rested. Sewed. Dressed, supper. To New Theatre. Met Embleton’s (4) and saw Hamlet – 2nd time. Home in bus.

Wednesday 9th January 1935

Very foggy, cold. Dark.
Sewed. Out to Selfridge’s. Bought patterns and tweed. On to Bertorelli’s. Lunch there with Alys and Eva. Home. Out at 4 to Blue Hall to see “Java Head” (and “Affairs of Cellini”) till 7.15. Home. All evening, planning patterns of coat cape and skirt, listening-in.

Thursday 10th January 1935

Light and milder.
Nearly all day cutting out reddish tweed suit on floor. Out at 6.45 to Chelsea. Supper with Doz alone (Pos “at Fledermaus” with Ginx). Home at about 11.

Friday 11th January 1935

Gale. Showers.
Busy doing coat, and to Selfridge’s for lining material and belting. To 4 Cambridge Gate at 4. All out, and Phil asleep. Tea with them at 5.15. Phil drove me home (on way to dance at Streatham – Harold Chase) in gale and rain. Worked all evening on coat. Listened-in to Lord Lloyd on India.

Saturday 12th January 1935

Fine on whole.
All day sewing at tweed coat (black and red) but to near shops. In evening to Badminton. Ladies four. Nice evening (Embleton’s to Nancy Taylor’s wedding and took Phil back to Cambridge). (Peter Maxwell Daniel’s wedding too).

Poz rang up about Tades and Lucy. I sewed on buttons. Met Alys and Eva at Brasserie. Lunch. In Baby Austin, Eva driving, to County Hall. To 4 Cambridge Gate. To University College at 5 – 6 – Lecture on Donatello. Supper at Villa Bella. On to Embassy Theatre. Saw “Duchess of Malfi”. Joyce Bland.

Worked, Cutting out cape all wrong and retrieving it. After lunch to 4 Cambridge Gate at 3.40. With Dennis, Alys, Eva and Teddy to Mr and Mrs West’s at Letchworth. Thatched house. Tea. On to West’s jam factory at Ardsley. Saw over it and house next door. Which Teddy and Eva bought! Or paid instalment of £35 or £2.10 a month in future. Home at 9.15. Cooked herring roes. To bed 10.30.

Hard at needlework, and Mrs Harvey unpicked skirt. At 1.15 lunch with Poz and Doz. Talked to Doz till 4. Home. Sewed and ironed. Supper. Changed. Out to Badminton, and back in snow and wind. Very cold. Walked from Baker Street!

Up at 6 to do B.E.B. (stove). Up 7.40 to put kettle on stove. Mrs Hogan didn’t come but Frances did. Out to Miss Bird’s (about Hogan) and to shops. Out again to Pear Tree field. Sat with Tades. Dinner. Rest all p.m. Tea in Tades’ room. Sat with her. Tried new air-bed-pan Supper with Miss Payne. Sat till 9 with Tades. To bed 10.

Read “Andersen” aloud to her. After Miss Payne came at 7. I out for little walk in dark. Supper. To bed 9.30.

Up at 6 for stove. Breakfast 9. Frances came at 8 but Mrs Hogan appeared 8.30 so Frances went. I out to shops and back by back path at 12.30. Dinner. Rests. Read “Shirley”. Got tea in Tades’ room. Miss Emerson in, and Mrs Rees Pryce. Unravelled wool in Tades’ room. Read to her.

Up at 4 a.m.! to see to stove. Frances came. Out to shops and then walked to old Church and picked snowdrops from Geoff’s (me: Geoffrey Barnard 1871 – 1891 – Poz and Doz’s brother) grave. Dinner. Rests. Tea. Sat with Tades and supper. To bed about 9.30.

Cold. Drizzly.
Up at 5.15 to see to Bebb (stove). Mrs Hogan came from 8 till 3.30. Out in drizzle to shops, and to Pemberton’s. Teeds came by train, at 12. Dinner. Rested upstairs and Teeds down. Tea. Teeds played lots on piano. She caught 7.30 train. Supper. Miss Payne only came at 9.30. To bed 10.

Up at 6 and back again. Out to get chicken 3.11. Walked back by fields. Miss White in. 3½ lbs chicken for dinner. Rest rather interrupted, so tea late (Mrs Pemberton called before dinner). Wrote to Aunt Bella and E.P.D. Read aloud to Tades – Andersen’s Tales. After supper and settling Tades, I packed up with stove upstairs.

Alys at 6.30 and we had supper here, and to Westminster Theatre together – “The Convict” from Great Expectations. Sir Martin Harvey (Dennis had had stalls given him) Teddy with Eva and Dennis out. Robert Geens and Wilfred Walker.

Out to Cooling Galleries, then Kardomah, Selfridge’s. Home. Lunch. Out to Mansfield Road School at 3. Home 3.30. Reorganising black taffeta frock. Supper. To Embassy Theatre at 7. Remained for play “At 8 a.m.” by Fabricius. Good. Home by 11 or so.

Indoors all a.m., washing, sewing. Mrs Harvey for 2 hours. After lunch, to see “Girls, Please” at Blue Hall (Neva Carr Glyn in it). To Bulstrode. Tea with Kitty. Home. Sewed black evening frock and listened-in.

Showery. Wind.
Alys came at 10.50 and took me to Peter Jones and other second-hand furniture shops to look at tiny chests of drawers. I had lunch at Y.W.C.A. alone. Home. Sewed on black fur cape lining, and then rested. Eva and Teddy in Teddy’s Wolseley-Siddeley. Car called for me at 8, and all 3 of us to Badminton. Very few men there. They brought me home.

To 4 Cambridge Gate to dinner. Dennis called out to Barnet and I with Alys and him. We had tea a clock-tower (opposite Bee-hives). Then to Rubens Hotel for a patient, then Bulstrode House. Then Alys took me home in Chrysler, and I lighted fire and sewed till 10.

Eva and Teddy in with dozen marmalade from West 8/4. I met ALys Marylebone and she and I to Earls Court Road for ch. of dr. I alone King’s Road and bought one at Savitt’s for £3.15.0 (Alys home and lunch early for Teddy to go to see Air Force man).I to Y.W.C.A. to lunch. Then home and rested (slept). To R.B.A. and did portrait 5.30 – 7.30. Supper there. Wheatley on Posters. Very good.

Out early to L.A. Sub Committee. On from there to Miles’. Talked to Ethel. On to Sissie’s. To Nellie Moir’s. To 77 Hampstead Way and lunch with Lois. She drove me, at 4 to Fordwych Road and I had tea with Muriel, and saw Piers – aged nearly 2 weeks. Home at 6.45. Sewed and listened-in. To bed 10.

Lois called for me 9.30. To L. Thomson’s. Painted till 12. To 26 Compayne Gardens to lunch (left canvas at 48 Cambridge Terrace en route). With Ethel in car to Mansfield Road School Meeting, calling or Mrs Bourchier on way. Ethel drove me to Bulstrode House, and I had tea with Kit. Home 6.30. To dine with Alan Baumer 7.45 Max, Hodge and Holmes there. Taxi home with Holmes.

Alys and Eva in with photo of Teddy – on way to Cookery. Alys again later. Serious talk. Chest of drawers arrived. I walked to Harrods to return tweed. To Y.W.C.A. for lunch late. To 4 Cambridge Gate. With Alys and Eva to ? Road about sewing. Tea at 4 Cambridge Gate. Home at 6.45. To Old Vic. Sandwiches. Saw Hippolytus and Shepherds.

Lunch with Teddy (Squadron Leader Mason “the Moaner” to sherry). Flight Lieutenant Gill (blue eyes), Flying Officer Peel at R.A.F. Mess. Saw hangars with aeroplanes and museum. Tea. Ping-pong. Back at 7. Dennis to nursing home. Supper. Bolivar. Home 9.15.

Took temperature after breakfast. 99 but lower. Out to Boot’s. Back. Out to lunch at 77 Hampstead Way with Lois. Painted her cook – Margaret – from 2.45 – 4.30. With Lois and Miss Matthews. Tea there. At 7. Lois and I in car to Elsa’s. Dined with Max and Elsa and saw sketches after. Lois took me to Swiss Cottage. To Mrs Harvey’s on way home about Bobby job.

Bobby Harvey in at 10.30 and I sent him to Armstrong Siddeley’s with Malcolm Berry’s introduction. Alys in for 20 minutes. I ironed things and pocket in coat (old). Ditto in p.m. and then to 158 Sutherland Avenue. Tea with Nell and Miss Huxtable. Home by 6. Cooked good dinner. Listened-in to two plays. To bed 10.45.

Window-cleaner in a.m. I out at 11 to look for looking-glass. To Union Street, Tottenham Court Road and home to lunch (beef steak). Out at 3 to Kardomah and stool for queue Arts Theatre Club and read. To Globe Theatre to see “Youth at the Helm”. Good. Pit.

Out to Lyons and bought capes. Lunch at home. Prepared room and at 4 came Christina Barnard, and 4.30 Menie and Frau Helen Scott Oelsner. Tea. They went at 6.30. Supper and to Duchess Theatre 7.45. Saw “Moon on the Yellow River”. Very good.

I walked to Lilian’s and got a jumper at Selfridge’s on way. 4.15 had my hair done. Home after. Lighted my fire. Sewed coat and listened-in. Supper and to bed 10.15.

Women’s International Art Club; Show. To 4 Cambridge Gate (after buying house-can (?) at Selfridge’s). Phil back from Cambridge. All of us with Dennis to Bath Club for dinner. Dennis’ 54th birthday. To Duchess Theatre to book stool. Home. Alys and Phil in. Made sandwiches and they took me to Arts Theatre Club. To see “Cornelius” at Duchess (at 7.30) queue.

Drew Mrs Harvey in large hat, in charcoal. After lunch out to shops and then changed and to R.W.S. Private View. Adrian’s invitation. Miss Stuart Wood (from R.B.A.) there. Adrian took me to tea at Arts Theatre Club. Home afterwards. Did over-coat all evening. Listened-in “Raleigh’s Last Voyage”.

Alys and Eva at 11 and I with them to look at stuffs for Eva’s wedding-dress. Back to lunch with them. In p.m, I cut out and began Alys’ tweed skirt. Tea – Dennis and Mr Sowerby in. Eva and Phil took me home in car at 6. Supper. They called for me at 7.45, and all 3 to Badminton. Nice. Dennis and Alys came and took me back in Chrysler.

Nellie and Maud to tea 4.15. Showed them flat. Tired after and sat by fire. Listened-in “Episode Past”. To bed 8.45.

Arrived Layton at 6.45. In garden. New wall to see. Glasshouses. To bed 9.40 as Dennis up at 3.30 a.m. to meet Teddy on night-train from Darlington.

Dennis busy weeding lawn; all of us did some too. Alys, Eva, Teddy and self fetched logs in trailer for fire. In p.m. Eva and Teddy wrote wedding invitation lists. All except Phil (in top room) out to the Reservoir. In evening to billiard room. Splosh.

Weeded plantains. Men moved safe from office room, on rollers. In p.m. Alys, Eva and I driven by Teddy in Chrysler to Richmond. Shopped. On way back through Marske, we lost our way and only back (again through Richmond and Grinton) at 5.30. Splosh in evening – we all played each for himself. Eva won.

Sat out in sunshine, in a.m. and some of p.m. Did a lot of weeding plantains on the lawn, with Dennis. Eva and Teddy did invitations, and went for drive in Chrysler. Splosh in evening and at 11.30. Phil drove Alys, Eva, Teddy into Darlington, and Teddy away by 12.15 train. 3rd class sleeper.

Bad night and slept on till 9. Very busy spring-cleaning stocking drawer. After lunch (Y.W.C.A.) to Euston about trains and to Lewis’ and Selfridge’s – patterns and materials. Home. Got suitcase ready.

To Euston 10 a.m. 10.30 train through to Llanfairfechan. Sandwiches, knitting and reading. “Hornets Nest”. Arrived at 4.7. Straight to Bryn-y-Neuadd. Nice visit to Edward 4.30 – 5 (Atkinson). To Pen-y-Gwyrd Hotel. Took room. Back, in rain to see Dr Starkey at 6. He drove me back to Hotel. Listened-in to “Oak Trees”. To bed and bath at 10.

Warm and fine.
Frank Archer in at 9.30. I met Alys and Eva – Peter Robinson’s 10.45. All looking for frock for Alys (for Eva’s wedding). Finally found at Bourne and Hollingsworth. Lunch at Aly’s club. To Dickens and Jones’, Debenham’s and I back to tea with them and stayed dinner. Mink to dine. Dennis out (lecture at Guildford) but in at 9.30. Alys and Eva drove me home at 10.30.

Wrote Phil. Very lumbago-ish all day. To 4 Cambridge Gate with Chinese book. On to Lechertier Barbe, and Vogue. To Waterloo. Sandwich with Lois and Frank Rush, Shoesmith’s – Atlantis Mediterranean. Home. Did up and sent Frank Archer’s books off. Rested till 5.40. To Boots to change book. Supper and knitted and listened-in.

Very lumbago-ish still. Out at 10.35 to All Soul’s Church (very crowded busses diverted to Wigmore Street). Met Alys and Eva there, but Eva’s banns not read! Back to 4 Cambridge Gate in car with them. To dinner (no Teddy). Alys and Eva took me to Chelsea and Doz. Home by 31 and 27 (on account of crowds on Jubilee route). At 10 (slightly better on back).

Hot and fine.
Bank Holiday. Alys came and I with her to 4 Cambridge Gate. We listened-in to Jubilee Procession and service at St Paul’s. Dennis out alone to see it, and Eva and Teddy too. All in at 12.30. I lunched there. Alys took me to Hampstead. View from Heath Mansions. To call on Laurie. Home to 48 Cambridge Terrace. I rested on bed till 6. Supper. Listened-in to King’s speech. Out to see bonfire – Hyde Park – at 10.30.  Jubilee – flood lighting each night and only pedestrians in illuminated streets. Very queer.

Out at 11.30. Met Ethel Miles. To Boot’s. To Russell’s – tried on frocks. Walked up Regent Street. Tried on at Nichol’s – black muslin 7 ½ – and Herbert’s – bought tunic dress and had black one altered. To Selfridge’s for patterns (and Lewis’). Home. Supper. Knitting.

To Chelsea to paint Oliver (butler) 10 – 1. Alys and Eva called for me, and I with them home to lunch and to shop afters. For frock (going away) for Eva – tweed. Tea with them and Teddy there suddenly. With Alys to Heath in car and she left me at 48 Cambridge Terrace at 7.15.

Washed things. Kit called in car, and I with her to lunch at Volta. Down with her in car and to Herbert’s for dress-fitting. To Arts Theatre Club and shops and home. Again out to supper at Lyons’ and to Lyric pit to see “Tovarich”. Good. No busses or cars in Piccadilly or Regent Street.

Woke late. Ironed. Lunch early and at 2 to 4 Cambridge Gate and cut out Eva’s check tweed skirt. Alys and Eva in at 4. Tea there. Looked at Eva’s presents. At 6.15 met Laurie, Pearl and Eric in Embankment Gardens but River Pageant cancelled. Saw doors Imperial Chemistry House. Supper at Victoria A.B.C. Floodlighting. Westminster and St James’ Park. Buckingham Palace. Home at 12.30!!

Voice quite gone! Phoned postponing Styer’s. Cut out blue silk blouse. Lunch. Out to Edgware Road 2.20. Stood, opposite Boot’s, front row on curb. King and Queen’s drive. They past 3.35 or so. Walked to Baker Street and saw them again!! Walked on to 4 Cambridge Gate. Very tired. Tea with Alys, Dennis and Eva. Did Eva’s skirt. Stayed dinner. Alys drove me home 9.10.

Met Doz outside Leicester Square (after going to pay Metesco bill and Harrod’s bill). We lunched at Arts Theatre Club. To Royalty Theatre. Upper circle to see Madge Pemberton’s play “King of Rome”. Very good Peter Croft, Napoleon’s son. Back with Alys (who was in stalls with Poz) and to 4 Cambridge Gate. Barbara and Peter there. Home at 7.15. Out to Embassy to see “Stevedore” 8.15.

To Chelsea to paint Oliver 10 – 1. Home to lunch 2. Forgot about Managers’ Meeting!! Out to meet Doz at University College to hear Arthur Bryant lecture on Pepys – “Known and Unknown”. In aid of Kensington Hospital. Very good indeed. Home. Very tired. Early to bed and listened-in. Phoned Elsa.

Bought bag for Rene Taylor 15/-. Out to buy food for evening. Home to lunch. Arranged supper. Sewed a little. At 7.15 Eric and Laurie (separately) to dinner. Hot chicken gumbo and cold chicken and ham and salads and Charlotte Russe. Looked at old photos and through the stereoscope. They left at 10.45.

Dull and cold.
Slept late. Lots of washing up for Mrs Harvey and then she and I pulled saddle bag chair to bits, as full of moth and maggots! She left at 12.50. Lunch. Did some of Eva’s blouse.

Cold.
Fine Arts, Bond Street. To Nicholls’ exhibition and Cecil Aldin’s. Met Alys at Dickens and Jones’ at 12. Beads. She and I back to 48 Cambridge Terrace and had lunch of the remains of chicken and Graves wine. I sewed blouse for Eva. Alys away at 4. I sewed till late, and listened-in by fire. Read “Men Never Know” Vicki Baum.

Eva and Teddy in late. Talked. Looked at wedding cake and presents. Alys took me to Sissie’s. Tea with her, and at 6.30 up to Elsa’s. Supper there. Keith Murray there. Home at 10.30.

Did a lot to armchair with Mrs Harvey’s help. Lunch. Out to Boot’s and Selfridge’s (for Sissie’s napkin rings). On to R.B.A. and drew there. 5.15 – 7. Mr Copley (E. Gabain’s husband) gave us lessons. Said mine was “far and away the best drawing he had seen that evening”. I did belt of Eva’s blouse.

To Chelsea. Painted till 1. Then ate sandwich in road and left canvas at 5 Tite Street (Cummins and Bumpus) To Flower Show with Kit’s ticket. Took ticket back to 5 Tite Street. Phoned Handy. Home. Tired and slow with crowded busses and paints to carry. Early to bed.

(Phil up to try on tail-coat and top hat!). Met Alys and Eva at Marshall’s for Alys’ hat. On to Goodyear’s in Bond Street about wedding bouquets. I to Fortnum’s (they home). I to Peter Robinson’s and bought hat for myself (for wedding). Lunch at Y.W.C.A. Home. Put veils on hat. Out to New Theatre. Booked stool. To Bourne and Hollingsworth about grey hats for Eva. To Arts Theatre Club. To New Theatre – saw “The Old Ladies” grim!

Fine and Warm. Windy.
Finished little ironing board. Alys called at 10.35 (Eva at cooking). I with her to shops and we lunched at Bertorelli’s. I to Harrod’s for toast rack and got Keith Murray mug 1/0. To 4 Cambridge Gate at 3.30 and did Eva’s skirt. After tea, with Alys and Eva to Miracca’s to see Eva’s wedding dress, last fitting! They took me home. Supper and early to bed.

Phone calls about Peter, ill at Salisbury. To Evans’ and Cooling Gallery. “Camden Hill Club”. Home after lunch at Y.W.C.A. Drew cash register there. Washed mat and carpet. Sewed on new frock (for wedding). Supper. Out to Westminster Theatre to see Wilfrid Walter in “Othello”. (Embleton’s to Air Day at Eastchurch).

I tea (in garden) with Lois and Laurie. Lois drove me over to 4 Cambridge Gate for her to see presents. 4 Caves there. She took me to Mrs Styers. I dine with her. Played Kanugo. Home 11.15.

Out to shops and prepared lunch. Alys and Eva came at 12.50. We cooked lunch, for us all to show – Eva “corned beef hash”. I to 4 Cambridge Gate after (at 3). They had just heard Peter had died ½ hour ago, at Bulstrode House of meningitis. All to Army and Navy to choose suitcase for Phil. I to R.B.A. Club 5 – 7. Home. Supper. Up to Buchanan’s. Saw Kit in bed, and all of them. Handy drove me to 4 Cambridge Gate. Then I to Bulstrode to see Peter, but on to mortuary to see him at 10.15. Home.

Out with Alys to shops. To lunch 4 Cambridge Gate (Eva was at Lilian’s). Finished her skirt and moved all presents downstairs. Alys to see Kit, at 6. Teddy came at 7.45. I home at 8. Supper.

At 10 to Golders Green to Peter’s Cremation. On at 10.10 to Mansfield Road School, and then to Haverstock Road School. Home to lunch. To Lilian for hair 2.30. Very tired. To 4 Cambride Gate on way home. Kit there seeing presents! Mrs McNalty and a man. Tea. Alys drove me home. At 7.45 Dennis called for me and I with them and Teddy to Bolivar’s to taste champagnes for wedding. Big dinner.

Bought overalls for Bobbie Harvey – 2 pairs at 5.6. Home. Tried on stockings and shoes. Supper 6.30. To Arts Theatre to see “Rossetti”. Interesting.

Gave Mrs Harvey overalls for Bobbie. Met Alys at Dickens and Jones (Eva’s hair). Round with her in Baby Austin to shops and 4 Cambridge Gate and again. Dennis’ hat to Heath’s. I had lunch at 4 Cambridge Gate with L. West too. Home via McBean’s. Met Alys at Dickens and Jones’ again (her hair). Home. Tea with her. Mr Berry there and West. With Alys to Kings Cross. Flowers from Layton and Ella by 5.40. Ella in taxi to Chelsea. Alys and I to 4 Cambridge Gate and I home by bus. Supper.

To Lewis’ for ribbon for cake. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Phil from Cambridge. Teddy and West in. Lunch 1 o’clock. Alys and I did Eva’s veil and dressed her. Phil off to All Soul’s at 1.50. Alys and I in taxi (as Chrysler failed to come!!) at 2.30 and Dennis and Eva in Rolls with Mostyn. Eva and Teddy married. Leonard West best man. Rene Taylor, Marion Berry and Mollie Cave bridesmaids. Mr Hunt married them. Guard of Honour by R.A.F. officers. Reception fo 250 or so guests at Langham Hotel. Cake from Layton. Couple off about 4.20. We all to 4 Cambridge Gate about 6. West too. Phil and I to King’s Cross to send picnic-basket to Richmond. Joined others at Bath Club – Dennis, Alys, Freer’s, Lucy, Mr Berry, Malcolm, Phil, Mollie and Nancy and West. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Freer’s took me home.

To 4 Cambridge Gate at 10.30. Alys so busy packing up Eva’s presents, that I made her stay and I up to Kitty’s instead. Up in her bedroom (Peter’s). She got into bed, and we had lunch up there. Talked, read letters. At 4, Kit drove me to 4 Cambridge Gate; she to Brownlee’s. I did up wedding cake boxes. Home at 8 o’clock. Wrote Aunt Bella.

Met Kit. Waterloo 9.50. Taxi to Lewisham to see Christina . With her about 1 hour. Kit and I to Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill. Dr Tennant rude. Dr Mapother not visible. To Victoria. Lunch – Stewart’s. Taxi to Caxton House, Tothill Street. Good interview with Dr Adamson of the Board of Control. To Volta House. Tea 3.15. In car to Muswell Hill to Woodside Hospital, WoodsideAvenue. Saw Dr Gilmour and all over. Back to Hampstead. I home by tube (at 6.20). Supper. Out to Embassy Theatre. Saw “Desirable Residence”. Alan there and we sat together.

Dennis, Alys and I to Waring’s (divan) and Bourne and Hollingsworth – “panties”. Tea at 4 Cambridge Gate. To Neame’s for Alys’ eyes and to optician. To Volta House 6.45. Handy home. Alys took me home. 9.30. Supper and did hat. Tired to bed.

Mrs Harvey didn’t come; gathered finger. Florrie came. Out to Y.W.C.A. but no lunch till 12.30 there, so on to Victoria. Got 2 sandwiches and in to New Victoria cinema about 12.35 to see “Lives of a Bengal Lancer”. Out about 3. Home. Sewed and listened-in.

Lunch with Christina there. Packed. Took her in taxi to Peckham House. Home at 3.15. Phoned Kit (in Wiltshire). Taxi to Fred Barnard’s (Poz and Doz) and tea in garden with them. P.W. Steer too. Stayed supper and home about 9.15. Taxi.

Mrs Harvey at 10. Took her to St Mary’s. She had gas but finger bad so lanced. Took her home, and then took her coffee and lint. Home and had lunch. Rested and read “Lost Horizon”. Shortened chiffon dress. To Duchess Theatre. Ticket. To Arts Theatre Club. Ate sandwiches and sweets. To Duchess Theatre 8.30 “Night must Fall”. Very good thriller. Emlyn Williams. Angela Baddeley.

Met Bella Monkhouse. Home. Tired. Rested. Knitted, and listened-in. Rang up Ame Scott. “The Golden Hind” on. Kit rang up.

Dolly’s hotel – “Fairview” and then Alys and I to Miracca’s about bill. She out. I home by bus by Portland Road. Began cutting out grey coat.

Continued cutting out coat. Altered pictures. Met Alys at Y.W.C.A. and lunch together. Home. Sewed coat. Wet evening so glad Tattoo put off (as Max was ill).

Heavy rain, some sun.
Sent Mrs Harvey all way to hospital. Dressed. At 11 came Alys and Dennis and Eva and Teddy (!!!) in Chrysler. All of us to Wimbledon to Rene’s wedding (to Arthur Nobel). Reception at Taylor’s and marquee. Rain!! I with them to 4 Cambridge Gate. Eva bad cold. Phil arrived from Cambridge at 7. I stayed dinner and we all saw film of Eva and Teddy’s wedding. Phil took me home in Baby Austin at 9.30.

Eva, Teddy, Phil and Peel and his girl to boat at Eastchurch. Alys came at 12. With her to shops, and lunch at Y.W.C.A. and to buy wedding present for Sidney Carver. Coffee at 4 Cambridge Gate. Then I to R.B.A Art Club. Lois there. Left, and home about 7. Supper. Finished off grey coat, and listened-in “Yeoman of the Guard”.

Alys came. We took flowers and fruit to Ford’s Hotel. Lunch at 4 Cambridge Gate and then to Mrs Oger’s about Alys’ skirt. To Victoria. I met Aunt Bella at 5. Taxi to Ford’s. Room 94. Talk, unpack, dinner 7.25 and Alys and Dennis came. Took me home.

At 3.20 Alys and Dennis came and took us to Great Foster’s (arthritic lady in car, and jack needed). Dennis and I bathed (2/6 each). Alys and Aunt Bella watched. Then had tea 3/- each! And back by 7.45. Dinner. Home about 9.30.

Alys came and drove me to Ford’s. Aunt Bella and I to Selfridge’s roof. Bathing-beauties! Lunch. Alys took us in Baby Austin to Olympia 2.15 Horse-Show (10/6 seats but paid 12/- each). Cadre Noir, Saumur and German trotting teams. Cotswold Hunt Children International cup. Dinner. Very hot and tired. Home at 91.0. Alys and Dennis took me on a drive.

Aunt Bella packing. Alys came at 11.30. To Ford’s. Lunch. Sat in private sitting-room. At 4, Alys took us to Paddington. Saw Aunt Bella off to Broadway 4.45. I to tea with Alys. She took me home after supper and began cutting grey silk frock. Wrote Ella.

Sewed grey frock all a.m. At 2.15 to Badcock and Alys came there. On to get Soir for Aunt Bella and then I to Lilian’s at 4 (Alys to help Dolly move to Antrim Mansions). I to Kardomah and home. Sewed all evening.

Sewed on frock. Alys came and we lunched at Y.W.C.A. To Harrod’s together. Sent gloves to Poz. Alys home. I too changed. Then she came and took me to Ayrton’s. Max on sofa. Tea there. Home at 7.15. Supper. Packed.

Friday 28th June 1935

Warm and fine.
Finished packing. Eva Berry rang up. Dennis called for me at 12 and we drove to Royston and met Alys and Phil (with Armstrong-Siddeley car). Lunch by quarry. On to tea and black and white bridge. I with Phil then to Layton. Arrived at 7.45. Dinner. Gardens. Billiard-room. I slept in Eva’s old room.

Perfect day.
Played golf, croquet and Teddy’s game. Lunch. Sat in garden. Reverend Booth to tea in garden. Discussed the Fête. After he left in garden still, and after dinner, played more croquet till nearly 10 (ducklings and goldfish and ponds!).

Kit came for my machine for Barbara. Drove me to Wimpole Street. I to Phil at 4 – sat till 6.15 (John Willis in). I out and met Alys and Eva (accidentally) in Marylebone High Street. All to Lyons’ to supper. To Phil at Bulstrode until 10.40, Alys and Eva away at 10. Jigsaw. Bought Star and Evening Standards with photo of Teddy at R.A. Review. “Bellicose; Eagle James”.

I to Sissie’s to call at 6 – 7. Alys came for me and I back with her to supper. Then both to Phil at Bulstrode House. Finished Hydie’s jigsaw.

Did a lot of washing and mending. Met Alys at Y.W.C.A. at 12.40. To Army and Navy in car, passport with her. To 4 Cambridge Gate for strawberries (Layton) and cream. To the R.A. at 5.20 till 6.20. Home. Made sandwiches. Taxi to Bulstrode House to Phil. Ate sandwiches there. At 8.30 at Daly’s to see Sacha Guitry “Mon double et ma moitié”.

Rests (slept on bed). Sewed blouse, Aunt Bella wrote letters. I out and up to New Church. Bought Nécromite – 9 francs. Supper. Patience.

After dinner, rests and at 4.15 came Madame Cauderlier to tea. Broken bone of little tow. She went at 7. Supper. Read and cards (wore my dress of Eva’s wedding with Christina’s frill). Wrote Kitty.

Saw “Italy” – very disappointing. “Great Britain” (with Tony’s dome of zodiac). Tweeds, Steamers. Very hot and tired. “Switzerland” watches. France d’Outremer” ie Tunis, Maroc, Algier. Bought “Rose de Jericho“ for 1 franc. Lovely d’outremer. Sat in gardens, all lovely with search lights for night. Home with difficulty by tram. Crowds. Tired.

Looked at Infantry monument. Home. Rest after dinner (Monsieur Malherbe brought T.S.F. back). To Eva’s at 3.30 and back at 7.30. Talked of boy next-door and saw him (4 and kept imprisoned by step-mother since Easter).

Dinner with Dennis and Alys who brought me home 9.45.

Out to Princes Street with Ella. Shopped (Xmas presents!). Back, packed. Dinner 12.30. Taxi 1 o’clock. Waverley Station 1.30 train to Darlington. Arrived 5.5. Met by Alys, Eva, Teddy. To Layton Manor. Croquet. Mink Goldrich there. Dinner. Splosh in evening. Alys and I watched.

Tuesday 20th August 1935

Hot. Fine.
All out to Tees in Armstrong. Perfect bathe, under waterfall. Lunch. Read on sofa. Stone in bank. Tea in garden. Dennis, Mink and Blaine took Debby to vets (tail joint off). Dinner. Sat in garden till 10 or so.

Wednesday 21st August 1935

Fine, windy, hot.
Men busy moving stones from quarry. I did flowers. Alys and Eva in Ford to Aldburgh and Richmond. Teddy to Catterick to meet Blair, who flew from Edinburgh. He to lunch here, and away at 1.30. Eva and Teddy took him Catterick. All busy about stones, quarry, till tea. Blair flew back over us at 5.30 having been to Bedford!! Going to Edinburgh tonight. Goldfish in tank and wee fish caught.

Thursday 22nd August 1935

(no weather).
Men to quarry. Wrote Kit and Doz. Ready to bathe but did not until 3.15. Then all to lower river. Very warm, but horrid smell. Dammed stream, so late for tea (in garden). Sat and listened-in and with Mink. To bed 10.20. At 1 a.m. Phil and James Campbell arrived. I heard the whistle and let them in.

Friday 23rd August 1935

Fine.
Stones. Adrian Waterlow came over from Richmond. I with him in his Morris to big quarry. He stayed lunch and invited us to cinema. I with Alys and Eva to Darlington in Eva’s Ford. Eva had her hair done (miss Smith). Tea. Men played Splosh and Phil ran his engine. After quick dinner 7.30 all in Chrysler and Armstrong to Richmond. Adrian’s treat to see “The Merry Wives” Chevalier. Jeanette McDonald.

Saturday 24th August 1935

Very fine.
Men building the waterfall. Phil and James away in James’ car. After lunch, all down to river and lovely bathe shooting the waterfall and then damming, till 6 or so. Later tea. Teddy’s croquet. Debby following Scotty about. Billiard-room after dinner when Eva had packed.

Lovely day.
At 8 a.m. Eva and Tedy away in Ford. Picked off nasturtium seeds. Croquet – Alys and Mink. Adrian came at 1. After dinner Mink read out Queries (Dispatch). At 3.30 all (and Adrian) to Tees and had lovely bathe. Back at 6.25 to tea in garden. Adrian away. Supper. Read Sunday Times.

Rain.
Alys and I did book, sorting. Dennis wireless – loudspeaker packed up. After lunch, Alys, Dennis and Mink to Darlington. Sent off loudspeaker and met Dolly Wilis at 3.10. I did flowers but heavy rain. Dennis and Mink Splosh. We watched. Phil phoned.

Sunny.
Did flowers with Alys and Dolly. Men to new quarry and Alys too, in Armstrong. Dolly and I saw in garden. I painted sketches of her. Painted blue cabbages in a.m. I read downstairs in evening. Others Splosh.

Fine then rain. Cool.
All to quarry (in Elgey’s field) for stones. Ozzy chased sheep. Home with load on and golf-croquet. Lunch. Thunderstorm. Knitted. Mrs Clarke, Bunty, Kirstie and brother and Crofter and Clansman (canines) to tea (from Firth of Clyde). Phil arrived in Baby Austin from London at 5.30. Men played Splosh.

Wrote Eva. Alys and Mink in Mink’s car to Richmond. Dolly and I did flowers. Dolly felt chilly. Dennis supervising waterfall all day. In p.m. Teddy’s croquet. Then in Armstrong to river. Mink and Phil dammed. Tea. Croquet again. Dolly to bed, with 100.4 fever. Champagne for dinner. I read, finished “Pilgrims of the Wild”. Others Splosh.

Rain, cold.
Mink away at 11. Dennis looked over books. After lunch, out to do stones in bank. Very cold. Alys and Phil then to Darlington to shop. I still in garden with Dennis, Barber and Smith. Wrote Aunt Bella. Alys and I made Dolly’s bed (Queen Astrid’s death).

Did flowers. Alys, Dolly and Phil to Ambleside to fetch Marion Berry (me: Teddy’s sister so my great-great aunt). With Dennis to look for stones. Stanley Warren at 3. Croquet. Others back at 5. Times Crossword in evening.

Dolly to Quarry. I packed. After lunch, Phil took Dolly and Me (and Alys) to Darlington. 3.36 train. Changed York, and found it was altogether on wrong train! Arrived King’s Cross 9.25 (not 7.40!) Spiritualistic Medium Lady and wholesale buyer – one made journey short. Tea and biscuits at 8.30. Home in taxi at about 10.

Up at 7. Re-packed. Mrs Harvey came. Away in taxi at 10.30. Put suitcase in cloakroom. To Army and Navy Stores. Sent cigar case to George Buchanan (for 21st birthday). Train 12.26 from Victoria, Eva met me at Queenborough 2.15. To “Bide-a-Wee”. Mrs Harris called. Teddy in 4.45. Bathed and for a walk to headland.

With Eva to shops, Minster and Sheerness. Teddy back at 12.45. Lunch. At 2 all in Fiat to Sheerness. Regatta. Dick Peel rowed us and Mrs Lister out to Lister’s boat. Anchored. Wing Commander Lister and children (Sheila and 2 boys). Very choppy. Judging motor-boat, Beau Geste, race. One man exhausted in air-ball tent. Tea on board. Gun. Back to moorings at Queenborough. Home. Mushrooms and chips. Hot baths.

Fine. Rain in evening.
No maid. Muriel at doctors. Eva and I did housework and prepared lunch. Teddy at 1 and Muriel who has to have appendix out. Drew cottage. Flowers to do. In Fiat with Eva for cakes. Dick Peel and MacDonald came. We bathed (not Muriel). Scotty ran home. All had tea. Then to Queenborough and Teddy and Paul launched Peel’s sailing-boat. Home to supper. Mushrooms and chips. MacDonald and Peel in at 9.30. Beer till 10.45.

Bought sandwiches, biscuits. 5.30 train to Darlington. Met at 9.45. by Dennis, Alys and Phil. To Layton Manor. To bed 11.

Phone from Eva – cystitis? Dennis to quarry with some young ones in Armstrong. Phil and James and Brian to Richmond for hair-cut. After lunch, croquet. Dennis and Alys in Chrysler to tea with Colonel Salvin, near Durham. Phil and Nancy to Darlington to meet Diana Galbraith 5.5. Others tennis. Dennis, Alys and I billiards in evening. Others danced.

Phil and Paul helped with stone. Then they all went to Greta for ferns. Croquet with Alys. Alys and I to Richmond in Baby Austin. Others in Armstrong. Some tennis. After tea, Alys and I back again to Richmond. Dennis and Diana planted ferns. After dinner, “Matthew, Mark” and Alys, Dennis and I in billiard-room. No dancing.

Alys and Dennis away at 9.45 to London. All the others in Armstrong and Brain’s car to Ullswater. I quiet day alone with Debby and Ozzy. Did flowers. Wrote Kitty. They back at 7.15. Dressed dinner. French riddles “Keep off the Grass” after.

Tennis. Paul to Richmond and then flag-polled his car. Phil and others to Abbey Bridge. Lunch. Croquet and tennis, and Diane sketched in wood. Talked of murder game at dinner. Murders in evening till after midnight. I read and knitted.

My 56th birthday. Phil beaten by Brian at ping-pong. Tennis (girls) and I did flowers. Gramophone. After 1 o’clock lunch, Brian and Joan away. Sat in garden and mooched about. Debby sick. At about 3, Alys and Dennis back from London. Tea. Up to flagstaff. Croquet. Talked Alys. After dinner, billiards (Alys and Dennis). I watched. To bed 10. Sleepy.

The party all drove in Armstrong to Buttertubs and Hardraw Force. Dennis, Alys and I had lunch and they returned at 2, and had their’s then. I packed and at 3.20 Harold and Betty Chase arrived. Dinner at 7. The Brownlees phoned. The 8 young people to dance at Morritt Arms till 11. I sat with Debby in big room. Dennis and Alys in billiard room with Brownlees. Young ones to bed at 1.15! Phil danced twice each with Betty and Nancy and once with the others (even Helen!)

At 10.35 Paul, James, Helen and Nancy all away in Paul’s car. At 11, the Chase’s went. At 11.20 Phil took Diana to Darlington. We packed, lunched. Turned on waterfall!!! Alys and I off in Baby Austin at 3.35. Met Dennis and Phil (Chrysler) at 8.30 at George, Stamford. Dinner 5/6 each. Phil and I in Baby Austin and Dennis and Alys in Chrysler. Home 1.10? about.

Unpacked. Mrs Harvey at 10. Out to Boot’s (oats). Lunch. Then to Selfridge’s for waterproof and serveral places for shoes. Bought at Dolcis, corner Bond Street. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Tea with Alys and Phil. Alys took me home in Baby Austin at 5.15. Ironed night-gown. Packed. Supper.

Fine and showers.
Alys (and Eva!) took me to Paddington 10.35 to Westbury 12.15. Met by Edward and Kitty. Shopped in Warminster. Drove to Sherrington, to their cottage. Dinner. Out and viewed Stockton Manor things for sale. Picked up apples in orchard. Alys, Eva, Phil and Teddy to a flick.

Kit and I at 11 to sale at Stockton Manor. Colonel and Mrs Hope-Johnson. Stanley Wooley, auctioneer. Home for 10 minutes. Lunch at about 2. I bought Persian carpet 36/-, Bokhara rug 26/- and copper coalscuttle 15/-. Kit got toboggan. Took them back at 6. Phoned Alys who out, and heard from Marie that Eva was ill and Teddy bringing her up these evening. Phil out with Paul and Brian.

Phil to Barts all day and to Model Engineering Exhibition. To Warminster with Edward for hessian. Arranging apples most of a.m. and plums. Fetched copper jam pan with Edward. He to fish. We lunched and talked over coffee. To tea at Captain (Royal Navy) and Mrs Greenwood’s and saw old mound. Crusader Gifford’s castle and moat. Edward took me to river and mill after, and church.   Phil 101 temperature (Alys found him very hot, when saying good).

To Warminster with Kit. Shopped. Sewed up Persian carpet and coal scuttle and rug in hessian. Edward to fish. Kit and I to Withy’s to pick wild guelder-berries. Lunch with her. Coffee. Dr and Mrs Houghton-Brown to tea (Mary Stratton) At 7, George arrived from London. I packed. Edward took me to Wylye Mill and Fisherton. Alys phoned and said Phil was ill – temperature and headache.

Slept and read “Time’s Door”. Out (after eta, with Miss Deacon, ex-nurse from upstairs). With Aunt Kate on Durdham Down. Trams. Supper. Phoned Alys. Phil better. Played whist-patience.

Out with Auntie Kate in car to Clifton Down and Observatory. Arranged to go home in coach (Phil was x-rayed). Temperature 102. Rest. Packed. Kit phoned at teatime, said Alys anxious about Phil, so settled to go by train earlier. Played ‘500 in evening.

Harvey’s car to Bristol. Train 9.35. Arrived Paddington 12.30. Kitty met me; told me Phil had tuberculosis – broncho-pneumonia. Straight to 4 Cambridge Gate, leaving suitcase at 48 Cambridge Terrace. Dr’s Chandler and Maxwell, and Aymer at 9 p.m. to do pneumo-thorax on Phil’s lung. Slept with Eva, who ill with cystitis.

Dull. Very mild.
Phil still 102. But ate pretty well. Kit came and took me to lunch at Zoo and took Alys out to Vale of Health later. Up with Phil from time to time. Nurse Spaight, day nurse. Slept with Eva.

Out with Scotty, walked to Cambridge Terrace . Took milk and in there. Wrote letter to Helen Watson. Out with Kit to shops, and lunch at Zoo. At 3.30. Phil had 2nd pneumo-thorax done by Dr Chandler. Not so bad. Fuss about Florence’s cold. Tears. She away. Marie out. Mrs Harvey came, Amy came. Teddy came and stayed night. I home to 48 Cambridge Terrace. Nurse Lovell instead of Richards who colded.

Out with Kitty to all sorts of shops for Alys. Then Alys with her. Did a lot of housework. Phil cheery. Up with him a bit. Talked about check for car tomorrow!

Saturday 28th September 1935

Hot and sunny.
Phil’s 22nd birthday. Dennis gave him £200 for car.
Eva got up. She stopper her strict dieting. I with Dennis to Lab and then shops and taxi back with things. Peter Hill and Reid-Brown called. 3rd pneumo-thorax done. Phil bothered by indigestion, but temperature better. Up with him. Teddy came at 4. After tea, Dennis, Eva and Teddy and I out in Chrysler, to run batteries; bought cake. Teddy took me home in Ford at 9.30. Amy in helping at dinner. Florence called at 5, but still cough, so didn’t stay.

Teddy to his Father’s. Back to tea. Otto and Mabel in afterwards. I wrote Adrian and Dora MacNair (Matthews). With Phil doing clockwork cars. Teddy took me home in Ford.

Heavy showers.
To 4 Cambridge Gate at 9 in pouring rain. Eva alarmed and had poisoned herself by rhinitis. Aymer saw her and very pleased with Phil who normal. Wrote Ethel Miles. After lunch, Phil x-rayed. I to get face-towels from 48 and to Selfridge’s for kettle and cars. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Wrote Lois and Doris. Did racing-cars with Phil. Alys and Eva out to libraries. Eva to bed directly after dinner. Coldy. All early to bed.

Alys out to get Model Railway News. I sewed in Eva’s room. She up at 11.45. I then out with Scotty to buy roses for Phil (from Aunt Bella) and took Alys’ dress to be cleaned. Dennis in to shave Phil at lunch. Teddy back from King’s Lynn 2.30. He and Eva out walk. Nurse Spaight out. Alys took me home in car about 6. Busy all evening arranging and finishing unpacking. Set 2/- to Mrs Harvey.

To 4 Cambridge Gate 9.30. Phil sick in night. ALys sick. She lay on Eva’s bed. Dr Aymer saw her. Up with Phil. At 2.15, he had pneumo-thorax (4th). Dr Chandler. Eva in taxi to have hair done 2.30. Back 4. Tea. Alys in bed in drawing-room. I with Eva to Victoria and she by 5.15 to Queenboro’. Alys in bed all day. Dennis out after dinner to carbuncle lady.

Sent flowers to Dick Cave from Phil. With Dennis and then United Dairies for T.T. (tuberculin tested) milk. I to butcher. Later to goldfish shop for sand and weed. Back and did goldfish bowl. Alys in bed till 3.30. I with Phil in p.m., reading. He depressed. We took up wireless to him. Doz phoned me. Dennis in late and out again to nursing homes after dinner. Alys and I in Phil’s room listening-in 9.40 news and war in Abyssinia.

Out to Sainsbury’s and to 48 Cambridge Terrace for letters. Wrote Kitty. Phil depressed. Talked to him and fed him oxtail. After lunch, read to Phil. John silence until tea-time. With Alys to King’s Cross to fetch boxes and sent old one to Layton at 6. Dennis not out again after dinner. All listened-in to News at 9.40.

At 10 a.m. Dr Chandler did 5th pneumo-thorax on Phil. I to Sainsbury’s. Alys out to buy a wool coat for Phil to sit up in. Dennis shaved Phil. In p.m., I read “Study in Scarlet” aloud to Phil. At 5.45. Paul Davis came and saw Phil for 10 minutes. Helen Watson called too. Phil had no rise of temperature from pneumo-thorax (A.P. – artificial pneumonia) All listened-in to news. Then Dennis and I for round in car at 7.

Rain at times.
Out in rain to fetch goldfish medicine. Did Times crossword with Phil. Dennis to shave Phil after lunch. Read to Phil “Barlasch of the Guard” He fell asleep. Dennis reported sputum nearly free. Alys drove me to 48 Cambridge Terrace at 5.30 (and Smith’s). Fetched things. Listened-in in evening. Tired to bed.

Otto brought Phil’s wireless and gramophone (from Cambridge). Did crossword. Alys took sick gold-fish and brought new one. I out with her in Baby Austin 12.20. Posted “Casserole Cookery” to Eva. Changed Eva’s bookshelves into dining room. Maples’ men came and took wireless and baffle away (for Hoults to take to Layton). Up for news to Phil’s’ room at 9.30. First Somerset Maughan’s play “The Circle”.

Turned out Eva’s drawers and washed brassieres. In Phil’s room. After lunch, I out. Walked to Bond Street and back. Got elastic for Harvey baby. James Campbell to tea and saw Phil for 25 minutes. Dennis out to dine – Bolivar and hear lecture – London Hospital. Alys and I listened-in with Phil. Eva telephoned.

I up with Phil most of a.m. Alys to shops. After lunch, Alys drove me to 48 Cambridge Terrace. I got Mrs Harvey, and we prepared for Berry’s. To Westbourne Grove. Back to tea. Dr Chandler to do Phil’s 6th pneumo-thorax. Phil headache in evening but normal temperature. I sat with him and listened-in. Dennis and Alys to visit Heanley’s 9.15 – 10.

Eva and I in Baby Austin to 48 Cambridge Terrace. Arranged things. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Teddy and Dick Peel called for Eva at 6.15. Dennis and Alys to fetch hamper from Kings Cross. Sat with Phil who sitting up and had bed-table taken up to him.

Alys out to buy mattress. Nurse Spaight headache and sent away (Aymer on phone). I nursed Phil for a bit. Hot bottle, temperature. New Nurse Hughes came. After lunch, Dolly Willis called. Very mild. Dull.
I out at 9.10 to Boots and Selfridge’s (tube) – got piano blocks. Back. Stuck felt on them. Maples’ men (2) to move furniture. Helped with books. At 1.50 came 3 men from Carter’s to carry Phil down to drawing-room. Dennis too. Everything taken from bedroom. Phil did wireless by bed and happy. Sat with him a bit. Dennis in – very, very tired. Heard news. I back to 48 Cambridge Terrace at 9.50 or so. Slept there.

Wednesday 16th October 1935

Very mild.
Got breakfast in bed. Kit called for me in car about 10.45. To Sainsbury’s and then 4 Cambridge Gate. In with Phil. Kit visited Phil. Alys out with her. I did crossword with Phil. After lunch, I read “Barlasch” to Phil. After tea, wrote Agatha Shore. Went home directly after dinner. Bulldog Drummond and to bed early.

Wrote Eva. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Doz at 11.10 to see Phil. Aymer 12. After lunch, Alys to get tray. I read aloud and finished “Barlasch” to Phil. Doris Freer called in a.m. Kitty at 3.30. She waited and took me up to Volta House to tea. And Kath drove me back to 4 Cambridge Gate. James visited Phil at 2.01. I home at 9.15.

Phil headache and disgruntled. Slow enema. He had no lunch. Felt sleep. I to Austin Reed about his hair-cut and to Lillywhite’s for pullover. Phil x-rayed at 2.15. Headachey but more bright later. Alys out to shops. Dennis took me home in Chrysler at 8.30.

Fine. Colder.
To 4 Cambridge Gate at 9.45. Men to move furniture back, and Phil’s old room made into sitting-room. Alys and Dennis’ old bedroom re-instated. In p.m. I to 48 Cambridge Gate and I did a lot of tidying up and covering-up. Fetched laundry. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate to stay (divan bed in Phil’s old bedroom). Alys and Dennis to fetch things from Kings Cross. Sewed on curtain hoops. X-ray very satisfactory.

Phil’s head better. Sat with him in a.m. and drew him. Alys and Dennis to try to get Maud, and to Lyon’s. Dennis and I to Mrs Harvey and to Mackeson Road at 2.30. No use. Home. Kit came, and took Alys to get Mrs Colegate’s Aunt (Marie’s leg bed). Alys to tea at Buchanan’s. Dennis slept, and late tea. I with Phil.

Alys in, and I out in a.m. To pay books and to Selfridge’s, Kettle. Home by No 30. After lunch, Nurse out. Alys to Harrod’s. I began “Nine Tailors” aloud to Phil. Otto May came. Saw Phil and had tea. All in Phil’s room in evening. He had smoked salmon.

With Phil and did Nurse’s crossword. Alys out. At 12 barber from Austin Reed came. Hair cut. Shaved Phil. I mended chair and shade. After lunch, I read “Nine Tailors’ to Phil. At 4.15 Aymer (who had tea) and Chandler 7th pneumo-thorax. I walked to Bond Street for records at Chappell’s and back. Alys very sick and diarrhoea from 8.30 to 11.50. I slept with her and Dennis in my room.

Alys better and up at 11 to see the “Crown” men. I out, walked to 48 Cambridge Terrace . Got clothes. Home in bus. After lunch, I read “Nine Tailors” to Phil till 4.15. Eva arrived and we had tea. Teddy and Mr Fresson arrived at 8 and Dennis back from lecture at Rochester and Lady Limerick’s. All dinner. They in to see Phil and way about 10.

I out to get bacon. Phil’s temperature 99.4 at 2. Both Doz and Dolly Willis arrived at 11.30. Both saw Phil, separately. I out with Doz and (after she to ennis for inoculation), lunch at Karaway’s. I to Selfridge’s and home. Read to Phil. Alys slept. News of Eva’s maid having scarlet fever!! I to 48 Cambridge Terrace to prepare it for them. Eva and Teddy to Lab and then to 48 Cambridge Terrace. Dennis home 12.

Did Eva’s fur-coat all a.m. Partly in Phil’s room. Teddy and Eva round in car, but not in. After lunch, I ready “Nine Tailors’ to Phil. Otto to see Phil and tea. Phoned Eva. Wrote Miss Ruthven. All in for news, with Phil. Busy making crossword puzzles, all of us.

Saturday 26th October 1935

I out to Selfridge’s to change shade” Alys told Phil about T.B. Teddy and Eva outside. After lunch (Phil did jigsaw) I read to him all p.m. He lying down. “Nine Tailors”. Dennis back to tea. Very cross about Phil being told. Alys and I out to Kings Cross for Layton. Taxi back. All in Phil’s room, guessing crossword and listening to news.

I read to him afternoon, and he tried? to sleep. John Willis to tea and saw Phil. Sister Hughes out 8.15 to meet Doctor. All to bed early 9.15.

Phoned about Hughes who not back. Nurse Richards came 8.30. I out to get bacon and plywood for bedbath. Kit came, saw Phil and took Alys to 200 for lunch. Dr Aymer at 2. I read to self and then to Phil and talked, till 4.10. Tea. Finished chair-seat. Teddy and Eva did fireworks. Listened-in to Atlee and did Sunday questions.

Very windy.
Eva phoned she had rash. She and Teddy to Dennis and then here (reaction to serum for scarlet fever). I to Lancet to buy Chandler’s article and to get fruit and coffee. Back by No 1 bus. Sat in Phil’s room. He actually slept till nearly 3.45. Read “Red Dog” to him. Eva and Teddy in. Dennis read upstairs, Chandler’s article. We all listened-in till 9.40.

Mild.
I out to shops (bacon) and with DeVilbiss to Bell and Croydon. After lunch 2.15 Phil was x-rayed again. I watched. Then he slept. I with Kit (who came) till 3. Then with Phil while he slept, until 4.15. He 98.6. Dennis back from consultation. With Chandler and Aymer at 7.30 as to whether adhesions to be cut. He said Chandler said he was “Thrilled by the x-ray”. Also Phil’s sputum free of T.B. We all listened-in to “Small Print” play and news. Eva and Teddy back to Eastchurch.

Alys and I out in car to Bell and Croydon and Army and Navy stores Kitty came. Saw Phil. I with her to see Quebec Street hat and lunch together – Cumberland Hotel. She took me to 4 Cambridge Gate. I with Phil, and he slept till 3.45. Read 10 minutes. James Campbell and Tom Gregson to see Phil at 4 – 4.30. Alys and I played dice golf with Phil. He shaved. He 99 degrees at 2.

I to see Grey Owl and hear him at his film of beaver at Polytechnic 11 – 12.15. (2/6). Couldn’t wait to shake hands! After lunch, Sat with Phil. He only slept at 3.50 till 4.30. Alys and I to 48 Cambridge Gate for things. In car. Dennis away to Layton at 9.30 with Heanley’s and Elsa Beckman. Talked Phil, Alys and cousins in Newcastle.

At 10, Alys was called up by Father St Alan to go to Minster. Eva and Teddy so ill from the inoculation for scarlet fever. So Alys in Baby Austin away to Sheppey. I to shops, and in and then to Polytechnic to buy Grey Owl’s book and to Times’ library. Sat with Phil in p.m. Read Morton’s “In the Steps of the Master” and to him a little. He didn’t sleep. 99 at 2 p.m. 99.2 at 6 p.m. Pat Gibson came at 7 and sat with Phil till 8.30. I to Kings Cross 5.45 for Layton things and taxi back. Train in 5.40. Silverlink. Alys phoned about 5. Dennis at 9?

Read Jungle Book to Phil and he couldn’t sleep. Dennis phoned 5. He in at 6.30. Had dinner, and away to Sheppey. Nurse Richards and I dined. Listened-in with Phil till 9.40. (Began transfers).

Foggy, damp, coller.
Out for “Motor”. Kit called and in with Phil. I darned stockings there. After lunch, I with Phil who slept 3.35 – 4.40. Then we talked (Dennis rang up at 11.30 and told us about Berry’s. He had driven back.) At 5.30 came Aymer and Otto! At 5.40 came Dr Chandler – 8th pneumo-thorax. Phone talk with Elsa. Dennis and I sat in Phil’s room.

Very fine.
Phil not feeling well all day. Kit took me in car to 48 Cambridge Gate and my Bank. Dorothy came 11. She and I to pay books in High Street. Then she saw Phil 10 minutes. He lying down. At 2.15 x-ray. Harding. Phil very tired and uncomfortable and sick feeling. Made him eat red mullet. Then read to him Simpkins Plot, Birmingham. Late tea. Phil 100.4 at 6 p.m. Smoked salmon. I read “Laura was my camel” till 9.10. To bed. Dennis in to dine 6.30 and off to Sheppey for night. Teddy bad pain. Row with Miss Shellum.

Phil better but not inclined to sit up much; I in waiting phone. Dennis phoned 11.30. Alys 2. At 2 came Paul Davis and James (5 minutes). Paul 35 minutes. Sat with Phil after. He couldn’t sleep. Pouring rain. At 6, he shaved. I drew him and nurse. Dennis in 7.40 did questions with Dennis (Sunday ones). Listened-in News. Phil throat cough.

Alys phoned 11. Coming back! Kit in very early and again. I to Albany Street shops. Sat with Phil and mended lamp flex and did chair. Sat with Phil and he slept in p.m. Alys arrived home 5. p.m from Eva’s. Bill Cave at 7. To see Phil and stayed dinner. I out to Sainsbury’s at 5.15. All, and Bill sat in Phil’s room till Bill went at 9.15. News. To bed 9.50.

Alys and I in Baby Austin to do lots of shopping in High Street. After lunch, at 3, Alys and Dennis to Minster in Chrysler. I with Phil and read to him Simpkins Plot. No sleep. At 6, I to King’s Cross and back in taxi with box. Harold Chase from 7 – 7.30 and sat with Phil. After dinner till 9.20 when Alys arrived home by train from Queenboro’. Dennis staying the night.

With Phil and Alys. Then Kit came and took me to Volta House to see Bokhara rug and back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Sat with Phil, read to him. Dennis arrived back from Sheppey at 5 p.m. Sat in Phil’s room; Wimpole Street fire. All early to bed.

Alys off to Sheppey at 9 (I to Sainsbury’s with her). I with Dennis at 9.45 to pay books. At 11 with Phil for 2 minutes silence. Dr Aymer at 11.15. Sat with Phil all p.m. He slept, and then I read. Alys back at 5.30. Otto May came and saw Phil and we sat there. Dennis, Alys and I in Phil’s room, but Phil not eeling well and lying down. Temperature 100.4.

I to Selfridge’s about bills and to Times Library. Back by 30 bus. Got meats at Portland Road station. Sat with Phil after lunch. He slept all pm.. No appetite and lying down all evening. Alys to my flat for looking-glass. Both in Phil’s room and I read aloud after tea. No wireless in evening. Phil not well enough.

Did chair seat till about 11.50. Out to Sainsbury’s and 48 Cambridge Gate. Back at 1. Phil not sitting up all day, and only orange juice. Feeling sick. Aymer at 2. Phil slept a1 hour, then I read. Becky Sharp phoned. Kit in for records. Alys and I very worried about Phil. 100.6 at 6. All sat in Phil’s room, no wireless though. Temperature down later, so cheered.

I to 48 Cambridge Terrace, also Mrs Harvey and did cleaning. Sheets to laundry. I to vote. Paid her 2/-. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Phil sitting up, till feeling sick and nothing but orange-juice. Phil x-rayed 2.15. I sat with him and he slept after. At 6 p.m. he up to 100.4 again. (Bovril and toast tea-time). Dennis fetched Alys and they to vote at 7.40. All sat with Phil after sprats dinner. News on wireless. All more cheered by x-ray – good and Chandler said effusion for pleura.

Fine and showers.
Kit at 10. Took me to High Street. Shops and Selfridge’s. Phil very low, but not so sick. Sat with him in p.m. He slept and woke at 4.5 feeling very sick. At 6, temperature up to 101.4 and we sat with him, after small washing. Very depressing. Phil looking very ill and very weak. Dennis listened-in in diningroom. Told us later.

Fine. Showers. Very mild.
I to shops for orders and Badcock appointment and to 48 Cambridge Terrace for recipe. After lunch (Phil had beef tea), he still up and I read to him till 3.15. Then he lay down, didn’t sleep. Felt less sick. Ran out for potted meat, which he had for tea! Alys and I to Kings Cross at 6 in Baby Austin. All sat with Phil. His temperature 100.4 at 6 and 100.2 at 10.

Teddy and Eva in late to tea. Dennis too and out again, Teddy and Eva stayed dinner; all in Phil’s room till 10. They to my flat.

Sat with Phil and read to him (Dornford Yates). He pain in every position and didn’t sleep (pleural effusion). Eva and Teddy to tea. Sat with Phil. He 101.4 at 6. Eva tried on wedding-dress for alteration. I to Old Vic at 715 to see “The Sisters” Tchekov. Supper there.

To Badcock’s. He stopped 3 little holes. Teddy and Eva to lunch. Alys and Eva out to buy hats. Teddy did jig-saws. I with Phil and read aloud (badly, felt queer). Eva and Teddy to tea too and to dine at Fred Barnard’s (Dorothy). We sat with Phil, who only 100.8 and more cheery. Chocolate to drink in evening.

Eva and Teddy in 11.20. (Eva nettle rash). They off to Layton. Dorothy Barnard in but not to see Phil. With her to Roger’s for prescription. Sat with Phil in p.m. Listened-in New Zealand v. Scotland. Rugger. Phil talked later. John Willis at 5.15. Saw Phil for 10 minutes. Dennis shaved Phil. After dinner, I read to Phil “She Fell Among Thieves” Dornford Yates. Dennis read upstairs. Phil’s’ temperature 100.4.

After lunch, sat with Phil, who up to 100.2 at 2 p.m. and headache. He slept all p.m. Helen and Tony Wilson to tea. Tony to dinner too. Broken arm in sling. With Phil after. Back and sat with Phil. He slept till 4.45! Dennis and Alys to Private View, Burlington House Chinese Exhibition. Alys wrote Eva. Knitted. All sat with Phil in evening. Phil 98.2 but 99 at 10. I to 48 Cambridge Terrace and got things. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Phil x-rayed 2.15. Read to him at 3.30 – 4.20. Dr Aymer came then. Alys out with Kitty to shops. Phil not about 100 all day. Knitted and wound wools. Florence made Phil a haddock soufflé. All sat in his room till 10. No wireless.

98.2. Alys took Dennis in Baby Austen to Bulstrode and Kings Cross. I took egg-box Kings Cross. Dennis to Darlington 10 a.m. I did chair and then to Bell and Croydon. Sat with Phil. Read to him. After Pat Gibson came and had tea with Phil and afterwards came back and dressed for dance, and stayed dinner Alys and I sat with Phil who very well 100 at 6 but 99 at 10 p.m.

Phil 97.6. Alys out early to shops. I did Phil’s pyjama coat. Then sketched Phil being shaved and hair cut b Knight’s man. Out to Richoux’s and brought back cake. Phil doing jig-saw. I read to him p.m. No sleep. All did jig-saw till 6. Phil 99.2! and same at 10 p.m.!!

Phil 98.4. I felt coldy. Out to meet Lois at 11.45 Selfridge’s. She and I walked to the R.B.A. show. Bus to Baker Street. Lunch together at Y.W.C.A. I back to 4 Cambridge Gate and stayed in my bedroom rest of the day, on bed. Tea and dinner there, so as not to infect anyone else.

Gomorrah died. Phil sub-normal but up at 10. Stayed in bed till 4.15. Knitted a lot. Dr Chandler to see Phil. Saw by fire in bedroom, and knitted. Read Goethe’s life.

Phil not up to 99 all day. In bed, knitting, up and fetched lunch up to bedroom, ditto tea. Out in Park and with Alys, looked over new flats in Portland Place at 3. Knitted and read – down to dinner with others, but in bed again after as not to sit in Phil’s room with cold.

Up to breakfast. Knitted Out to 48 Cambridge Terrace and got letters. Gave Mrs Harvey 5/-. Bought Webster’s Dictionary for 6/-. Back and sat on balcony in sun, talking to Phil. In p.m. sat upstairs. Reverend Booth from Hutton Magna came to tea. James to tea with Phil. Phil normal all day, but 98.6 at 10. I listened in upstairs in evening.

Wrote invitation answers and for car driving license. Phil just at over 98. Out to shops. Bought Fougasse’s book on having been warned for Phil. Doris Freer to lunch. I to U.C.H. with books, to visit Katharine Buchanan (ringworm). Tea. Knitted. Dolly Willis called and talked from 6 – 7.10. Alys out. I upstairs after dinner. Talk by Desmond Macarthy on Samuel Butler.

Very dark. Foggy.
Mostly indoors, but out to Albany Street. Got Radio Times. Alys busy shopping. Phil up to 99. I slept in p.m. on my bed. Dennis up at 4, and read by fire and I too “Goethe”. Alys after tea, while Phil washed. I with Dennis to Kings Cross in Chrysler to fetch Layton boxes. Pearman has pleurisy.

Sunday 8th December 1935

Very fine. Sunny.
Paul Davis to visit Phil 11.45. To 48 Cambridge Terrace and ironed new jumper fronts and sleeves there. Fetched fur coat and beaver collar. Sat on balcony for coffee after dinner and we did “Are You Sure?” all together. Read in p.m. Dennis in his own room. I read Goethe in my room in evening and knitted. Sore throat.

Monday 9th December 1935

Fineish.
Phil up to 89 at 10. Spent morning waiting for Lois, whom I expected at 11.30. She came 12.45. Took me with her to 77 Hampstead Way. Lunch there and she brought me back at 2.10. In with Phil (as cold well again). Dozed. Read to him at 3.50 – 4.30. Alys and I with him. Jig-saw. Then upstairs reading. Dennis, Alys and I all reading in evening – Phil’s exciting book.

Tuesday 10th December 1935

Very cold and windy.
Phil 99 again at 6. I to Wallace Heaton and 48 Cambridge Terrace. Back with various things. Alys, Phil and I listened-in to the Varsity Match in p.m. Otto called after tea. I read a little to Phil. Dennis back 7.30 and we all listened-in. to “On the Spot” by Edgar Wallace.

Wednesday 11th December 1935

Cold.
I out to High Street. Wrote Christina and Quits about Cousin Jane’s portraits. Phil not feeling well all day. Sore throat and temperature 99.6 at 6. Kitty called. I saw with him in p.m. and no reading till after tea. Then read. Upstairs, sewed up jumper. All sat with Phil, looked at spheres till 10.30.

Thursday 12th December 1935

Cold. Dull.
Out with Alys in Baby Austin. Bought wool. To 48. To Lillywhite’s. Changed cap. Back. Phil still not well, but a leetle better. Sat in his room and began Alys’ pink coat and read 45 minutes. Finished “Murder Must Advertise”. Phil normal at 2 and 99 at 6. We listened-in to a foolish Cinderella Vaudeville.

Friday 13th December 1935

Cold. Dull.
Phil’s neck sore. Out ALys to High Street and got Xmas cards for U.S.A. Back at 11.30. Phil earache and depressed. Sewed collar and cuffs on fur coat. X-ray at 2.15 and mistake so again. Phil slept till 4.30. I knitted. Becky Sharpe and Doris to tea. Becky in to see Phil, who better. All listened-in to Constanduros, Clapham and Dwyer, in evening. Phil better.

Saturday 14th December 1935

Dark and cold.
Phil normal or below all day!!! Did jig-saws. I to 48 Cambridge Terrace. Got frock, gloves. Back to lunch, but did Dennis’ father portrait first in frame. Sat with Phil who slept all p.m. I knitted. Dennis to tea. Alys and he to lecture at Royal Institute by Yetts on Chinese Art. Sat upstairs. Dennis cold and later in Phil’s room. Read lots of newspapers about Italy, Abyssinia Peace Terms.

Sunday 15th December 1935

Cold. Fine.
Phil not higher than 98.8. Good day for Phil, doing jig-saws and cheerful. I wrote Davey’s with cheque 18/- for things, and Nell Sime (about Phil and Wst for jams to Tades. Walked to Wigmore Street Post Office before dinner. With Phil, who slept all p.m. Dennis and Alys on bed upstairs. All with Phil and did “Are You Sure?”

Monday 16th December 1935

Very cold showers and gale.
Dr Chandler at 10.30. Phil normal or below all day. I did shopping for Alys in Albany Street and High Street. To Selfridge’s for Ella’s sealing wax set 2.3. To 48 Cambridge Terrace for shoes. Sat with Phil in p.m. Read salar the Salmon to him 40 minutes. Dennis, Alys and I to sherry party at Lewis Baumer’s. Faraday’s, Ruses and Adrian there. With Phil in evening – crossword.

Tuesday 17th December 1935

Dark and dull.
Letter from Teddy to Alys saying he has Air Force appointment for 2 more years. Alys sore throat, so not with Phil. I to Selfridge’s, changed Lexicon for Lobo. Sat with Phil who slept after 3. Aymer at 2. Read to Phil after tea. Alys upstairs. Dennis very late, capercailzie at 8.15. Dennis and I with Phil and heard news at 9.30.

Wednesday 18th December 1935

Fine. Fog in p.m.
I to 48 Cambridge Terrace andquickly back to Phil. With him and began EB’s jig-saw. Eva and Teddy at 1. At 1.45. Dr Chandler and secretary came and Dr Aymer. 6 ½ pints of pleural fluid drawn off from Phil. About 1½ hours. I with Alys. With Phil after. He did jig-saw!! Teddy too. Eva to have hair done. Eva and Teddy to dinner. Away 9. Didn’t listen news. Phil exhausted by bright. Record of 9 pints said Chandler. Expected 3 pints.

Thursday 19th December 1935

Very foggy and rainy.
Phil up to 99.2 at 6. Changed cheque for Mrs Harvey. Back and with Phil (Alys still coldy). Phil exhausted and not sitting up except to meals. Slept all p.m, read 30 minutes and again after tea. Did up parcels and cards and wrote Aunt Bella. Sat with Phil. News (Hoare’s resignation).

Friday 20th December 1935

Lovely day. Frost and sun.

Out posted Lois’ book. To Nash’s. Queen Victoria Street. Back by tube. With Phil, knitting. He jig-saw. X-rays at 2.15. Phil slept; after. He felt very well all evening. I wrote Marjery Leggett, after tea. Phil normal or below all day. Listened-in with Dennis (Alys still upstairs) and to Agate on Bernhardt in evening with Phil, Old Brandy in evening.

Saturday 21st December 1935

Fine. Very cold.
Out to Lyons’ for smoked salmon. Sagne’s. Posted parcels. With Phil, who did jig-saw. Alys on balcony. Coffee. Phil listened-in to New Zealand v. Wales for 30 minutes then slept. Alys still upstairs, and away from Phil. Dennis and I listened-in with Phil to Variety and news. Phil normal all day.

Dr Chandler said Phil very, very slow, very little vitality, looked very washed out.
Dr Aymer said “Yes, slow, but we must remember how very. Very ill he has been”.

Sunday 22nd December 1935

Fine, foggy.
I to 48 Cambridge Terrace for things. Otto and Mabel in a.m. Otto in Phil’s room with address. I with Phil who slept till 3.30. Then I read till tea. He had slight headache. Shaved himself. Alys in, as cold well. All sat with Phil in evening. Cards, letters.

Monday 23rd December 1935

Fog. Dark.
Out in fog. Alys out to shops and with Dennis to get Chandler presents. I with Phil and he felt ill and miserable, headache and stuffy. Alys phoned – unable back for lunch. Phil slept in p.m. but still headache. Dr Aymer phoned had cold so didn’t come. Phil up to 99 at 6 and 99.8 at 10. All of us sad about it. Sat with him, but no wireless. He felt ill.

Tuesday 24th December 1935

Rainy. Milder.
Phil better. Slight headache all day and no appetite. I to 48 Cambridge Terrace and Mrs Harvey to clean up for Berry’s. Back and with Phil who normal. Alys out at shops. Sat with Phil in p.m. Read “Salar” to him 3.30 – 4.15. At 4.40 Dr Heanley to see Phil and had tea with us and Teddy and Eva, who came. They changed and to Ayrton’s to dinner-party. We with Phil and listened-in. He cheerful and 98.6 only.

Wednesday 25th December 1935

Fineish, mild.
Phil headache but normal all day. Teddy and Eva at 12 or so and presents (Alys and Dennis to Helen’s at 10.30 and back). Dolly Willis called and stayed lunch. Then after for walk in p.m. Alys and Nurse listened to King’s Speech at 9. I with Phil who couldn’t sleep. Headache well. Talked about tank engine – difficulty – wheels within wheels. Tea. Gramophone records Gilbert and Sullivan. Jig-saws, Kanugo upstairs. Turkey and Xmas pudding. Phil had turkey. Sherry in Phil’s room. Eva and Teddy away 10.15.

Thursday 26th December 1935

Very mild and dull.
Phil headache and sleepy all a.m. but below normal 98.2. I wrote lots of letters. Eva and Teddy in about 12. All cold lunch. Dennis, Alys, Eva and Teddy out to see Grey Owl at Polytechnic. I with Phil who, at last, slept. I out with Scotty after tea for walk. Eva and Teddy did puzzle upstairs and Eva helped Florence wash up. Dennis, Alys and I in Phil’s room.

Friday 27th December 1935

Very mild. Muddy. Drizzle.
Dr Heanley to see Phil. Out to Dickens and Jones’ to change shoes from Kitty. Searched for wool (pink). Gayler and Pope, Lewis’s and Bourne and Hollingsworth – all closed. Lunch. Teddy and Eva in for it. In p.m. Phil disturbed about tank engine. Alys to Bond’s. Teddy and Eva jigsaw. Phil at last slept. Pat Gibson to see Phil (who 98.8 at 6). Dennis to Teddy, Eva and me to Bolivar’s. Walked there and back. Champange discussion. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate.

Saturday 28th December 1935

Rain.
Out with Alys in Baby Austin in rain. Dr Aymer. On walking to Woolworth’s. Back at 12.45. Teddy in then, and Eva at 1. After lunch, Dennis reading about his letter to Dr Dobson. I in Phil’s room. Phil slept till 4.15. I darned Eva’s blue jersey. Talked till 4.20 or so. Dennis in to tea. Malcolm after tea and sat while we dined. Teddy out with him after in Ford. Eva and we all in Phil’s room. Phil bright and not above normal all day.

Sunday 29th December 1935

Fine on whole.
Phil bright and not above normal. Dennis and I out with Eva and Teddy at 12.20 in Park. In p.m. Alys and Eva out for walk. I with Phil who didn’t sleep at all. Talked a little. Then finished off “Salar the Salmon”. Otto, Mabel and Dick called at 7. After dinner, Eva and Teddy away at 9. “Are you Sure” first. Row about News and Dennis upstairs alone very cross. Alys and Phil played Casino.

Monday 30th December 1935

Sun and rain, wind.
Out with Alys in car. On alone to Lewis’ and then bus to 48 Cambridge Terrace. Mrs Harvey and Baby there. Ironed Alys’ jersey coatee. Back via Gayler and Pope (for navy wool). Lunch. Sat with Phil and sewed up the pink coatee. Phil slept, then talked about cricket. Very well, shaved himself. Dennis still quiet and rather silent all evening. Accordian for Phil from Heanley. He played it. No news from wireless.

Tuesday 31st December 1935

Pouring rain. Mild a.m.
Out in pouring rain to Gayler and Pope and chose pattern pamphlets and needles, wool. Phoned Lois for birthday. After lunch with Phil who very well, normal and below, slept. Then I read him “Innocence and Design”. Pat Gibson to tea with him. Knitted upstairs. Began navy coat for Eva. Dennis in very cheerful. Sherry for New Year’s Eve and Benedictine (Phil). Dennis read “Standard” so no wireless news again. To bed 10.35 (Wrote Aunt Bella in a.m. Alys out with Kit to look at flats).
