Foggy and damp. Cold.
Rain in a.m. so no digging. Alys interviewed Doris and Elsie. No post out and Yorkshire. Sewed bathing-gown. I with Alys to call on Mrs Cooper and Mrs Blaine, after lunch. Mr Booth, Vicar of Hutton Magna to tea. In billiard-room in evening. Dennis won. Alys and I watched.

Very damp and foggy. Very fine at Layton.
Well. Started at 10.45 in car (very slippery). Sandwich lunch after Doncaster? Phil drove after Grantham. Foggy, so decided not to go via Cambridge with bone box. Arrived Cambridge Gate 7. Eva there. Dinner, they opened cards. Dennis and Phil took me home at 9.30. I opened cards, letters, presents.

Well. Mrs Harvey at 10. Alys in Chrysler at 11.15. We to Crematorium, Golders Green. Wade cremated at 12.15. We to Volta House. To Embassy and to 4 Cambridge Gate. I lunch with Alys and Phil. We 3 to Embassy, but pantomime so home, severally. I wrote Ernest Miles about Wade’s Will. Supper. Met Eva and Phil at Embassy Theatre and saw “Without Witness”. Anthony Armstrong. Very good.

Well. To shops and laundry. To Alys’ at 2.30. Sewed in Phil’s room at his trousers for fancy-dress. Alys too. Both of them colds. Poz to tea and 4 of us to Pipers’ Guild concert at Bedford College at 5 – 6.15. Dorothy there on platform. Home. Supper and to bed.

Well. Met Phil and Alys and to Gamage’s to buy whiskers. Home to 4 Cambridge Gate. Lunch there. With Alys to 6 Seymour Street and all p.m. looking over Wade’s things. Tea at 4 Cambridge Gate. Sewed Eva’s bathing-cap. She in and I with her at 6.30 to Miracca’s. Back and dined at 4 Cambridge Gate. Dennis read aloud Boyton’s speech on the Body – “Wonderful”. I home at 9.30.

Well. In all a.m. writing and sewing buckle fur-coat. Fire alight. Washed several things. Wrote Amy Steel. At 5.30 to Cambridge Gate. Helped with fancy dresses – Eva and Phil – Bathing dress 1865 and Phil’s stock. Whiskers. Dinner. Alys took me to Badminton in Baby Austin. Eva and Phil to Cave’s dance. Nice evening playing and felt very fit.

Tea and supper with Faraday’s. Selous family there. Lois, Laurie and I did Heads, bodies and legs. Laurie drove me all the way home.

Back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Tea in Alys’ room. Phil too. I home at 8. Supper – egg. Sewed – machined curtains.

Phones to and fro with Quick’s. Eva and Phil to dance there in Chrysler. I to fetch Eva’s shoes. Alys and I with Dennis to Oyster Bar, Gerrard Street and Chinese Restaurant for supper. News. Theatre. Dull and clear.
To 4 Cambridge Gate 11 o’clock. With Alys to fetch Baby Austin. To shops and then Wade’s and got some things done, back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Phil still in bed. 1.10. Lunch. Took Phil to Thew’s and on to Selfridge’s in car. Changed dressing-gown and magnifying glass. To Wade’s room. Got three chairs into Baby Austin (cleared out desk too). Took folding chair to upholsterer. Others to 4 Cambridge Gate. I sewed Phil’s coat. Eva back (Alys, Phil and I listened-in) to Phyllis Tate’s music from Bournemouth Orchestra 3.15 to 4.30. I home to supper.

Alys came at 10 with Chrysler. She and I to Wade’s room. Did a lot of clearing up and packed the car full; took things to 4 Cambridge Gate and then to 48 Cambridge Terrace – chairs. Took car to Lab. Lunch at Y.W.C.A. To Lilian’s (Alys hair done). I to Lyric for tickets and to 4 Cambridge Gate. Phil there, not well. Sewed coat. Alys back to tea. Much tidying. Bronwen leaving tomorrow. Adrian to dinner. I home at 7. Supper, wrote Ruth Sharp.

Did up parcels for Ruth Sharp and took to post. Wrote Jim Sharp and Jim Standen about Wade’s legacies. Bronwen away to Wales. To 4 Cambridge Gate at 6. Eva there. Other 3 to Layton. Eva and I to Lyric to see “Reunion in Vienna”. The Lunts. Very good actor and actress (Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt) I slept in Phil’s room.

Tea and Supper. At 10.20 I home to 48 Cambridge Terrace. Eva to bed. Others back from Layton at 10.25.

Sorted and burnt C.H.W.’s letters. At 12.30 to 4 Cambridge Gate. Marie to meet Florence, new Welsh maid. Alys, Phil and I had picnic lunch and drove to Cambridge in Chrysler. Bones and trunk. Straight back, leaving Phil. Left car at Lab. Coffee at French shop, Paddington Street. I home. Supper.

Finished clearing up C.H.W.’s things and sent off parcel to Charles Wade and letter. Lunch. Prepared tea. Alys came, and then Alastair and Doreen Danby and Kit and Barbarba and then Peter. Tea, and games, memory and cross questions. They went at 6. Alys at 6.30. I cleared up a bit. Supper.

Indoors and then to meet Alys at Y.W.C.A. Lunch together there. She took me in Baby Austin to Wade’s room and we got the carpet and took it (via 4 Cambridge Gate) to Mrs Harvey’s at 14 Rainsford Street. Alys in at 48 Cambridge Terrace and I mended coat. She took me to Albany Street. I to Elsa’s to tea and dinner. Max at Five Towns. Home at 9.50.

With Alys to Selfridge’s and bought tea-service for her (with C.H.W.’s money). Home to lunch. Did some sewing. At 4 to tea at Faraday’s and to supper and with Lois (in Miss Kathie Davis’ car) to Art Club lecture by K. Morris on Sawfly in Bohemia. Kathie Davis took me to Golders Green station.

Menie in. I met Alys and Eva at Plaza to see Dorothy’s piping film, also Noel Coward’s “Design for Living”. 11.40 – 2. Lunch at Brasserie. Home. Washed and ironed, and stretched canvas. Supper and to Badminton. Eva there, and Alys in Baby Austin brought her and told about Marie’s sudden perforated ulcer and operation.

Finished sleeves and to Alan Baumer’s at 7.30. Mr and Mrs Maurice Webb and Mr and Mrs Norman Wilkinson there. The latter (Mr) very amusing. Good dinner. Home at 12.15.

In doing chair-arms. To 26 Compayne Gardens 12.30. Lunch there and then with Ethel in car to Mansfield Road School. She took me to 4 Cambridge Gate (Alys out, I got my sheets). Then was driven home. Spent rest of afternoon doing arm of saddle-bag chair. Very good dinner of left-overs from J.H.M. dinner.

Alys in and I with her to Harrod’s in Baby Austin to look for present for Peter. I to Selfridge’s too. Home for lunch. To see Dennis at 2.30 about J.H.M. Home and rested on settee. Finished “Sons” by Buck. To Wyndham’s Theatre pit queue. Very, very cold. Ate supper at Arts Theatre Club. Saw “Clive of India”. Leslie Banks, Gillian Lind. Very good.

Gwen and Will and Dennis and Evan all in to tea. Denis and Alys and Gwen and Will to Becky’s for weekend, dropped me at 48 Cambridge Terrace at 5 o’clock or so. I to supper 7 at Menie Reid’s. Home at 10.

All the Buchanan’s (except Barbara). Dennis, Alys and Eva, Betty and John Alford (Peter’s 21st birthday)). Stalls for “Gay Divorcee” Fred Astaire. On to supper at the Mayfair Hotel. Home at 1.30 a.m.

Pains. Busy shopping and cooking for Sissie, who arrived 1.30 from Dentist’s, to lunch. She rested afterwards. I with her to bus and on to 4 Cambridge Gate. Alys out. I stayed till 6.30, then to Miracca to fix about new dress. Home 7.45. Supper and washed up all luncheon things. To bed at 9.10.

Alys came in Baby Austin. I with her to Selfridge’s. To U.C.H. to see Marie. On to Shaftesbury Theatre, pit to see “Spring 1600” (Arts Theatre to eat supper first).

Eva sore throat. Out to work. I home. Window-cleaner. Went to Toulouse-Lautrec and Nando Manetti’s pictures. On to meet Eva and lunch with her. Home. Drew. Lisa chalks. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Eva back 5.30 with still a sore throat. Dinner. I stayed night again, and Alys and Dennis home at midnight.

I away to Chelsea (Peter took me all the way) and had supper with Dorothy (Polly to Harrison’s). Away at 9. Tired, and slight pains all day.

Well. Wrote Letters. Aunt Bella. Out to Regal and saw “Little Women” queue in 12.20. Out at 3 (ate sandwiches in). Walked to Lefevre Gallery and saw Engelbach flower paintings.

Home, after shopping H & C. Cooked collops. Out to Royalty Theatre and saw “Within The Gates” Sean O’Casey. 1st row pit. Very interesting.

Well but in cold. Alys in, saying Gwen coming to tea. I to shops. Prepared for Gwen and Helen, who came to tea at 4. Helen stayed till 6.15. Supper and I out to Embassy Theatre to see “The Quitter”, quite good gangster play.

Sore throat so phoned Lois couldn’t meet her. Indoors all a.m. Met Eva and with her to Miracca 2.15. Back to 4 Cambridge Gate and Phil there for 24 hours. Tea there. They took me home in car (al). Eva and Phil called for me at 8 and to Badminton and they took me home. 16 people there.

To Hampstead and Highgate for walks. I stayed on. After tea, I painted test-tubes for Dennis. He helped (chart). After supper (7) Dennis to patient and we took Phil to Liverpool Street. He to Cambridge. They took me home.

Long phone from Mrs Styer. Stayed indoors all day. Painted Mrs H, in a.m. and tray in p.m. Tired and throaty so not to R.B.A. Slept on settee 4.30 – 6.20. Supper. Wrote E. Buchanan and to post.

Well, but coldy. Alys came, then I made coffee and she called for me 12.30 and we fetched Eva and all had picnic lunch on Hampstead Heath!! Took Eva back to the Temple and Alys took me home. I out to Royal Institution at 5 for Guedalla’s lecture on Wellington. Home about 7. Supper. Bath and bed.

Well. Tired. Not with Lois as snow but fine later and to Chalk Farm School. Lunch at home. Then Alys came – Peter Robinson’s and to shops. With her to choose frock for her and to Gooch’s for carpet. Coffee at Lyons. Marble Arch for cocktail, petit fours to taste. Home 5. Rested 1 hour on bed. Felt better. So to Old Vic to see “Importance of Being Earnest”.

Indoors all a.m. for sherry to come. Mrs Harvey up to Ruthven’s. Lois came bringing glasses. I sewed cushions. At 3.30 to Needlework Exhibition. Then met Eva, Charing Cross and to Arts Theatre Club to tea. Then Miracca’s for fitting 7. To Globe Theatre and saw “Don Juan” Obey. Compagnie des Quinze.

Met Lois and to British Museum. To Alys’ to lunch. She took me home in Baby Austin. Very tired. Rested on bed from 3 – 6. Dressed and to Alan’s. Dinner 7.30. Lewis and Nettie and Betty Moir there. Played Quintro. The Moir’s took me home in car all the way and Lewis too.

Edward Buchanan and nurses home. To L.A. Sub Committee but cancelled. To Kingsgate Road School. Rugs ready. Paid 3/9. Alys came in Baby Austin. With her to Marylebone High Street and 4 Cambridge Gate for wine glasses and decanter. Had lunch at home. Rested. Then Alys came and took me in Baby Austin to 4 Cambridge Gate. Tea and painted stair carpet. Alys took me home at 6.35. To bed early. Very tired. Bad night with pains.

Kit rang up. Plumbers clearing sink all a.m. Window cleaner too. I out after lunch to Lilian for hair to be done 3 – 4. To Royal Institution and heard Phil Guedalla lecture on Wellington in Politics 5.15 – 6. 15. Felt painy but enjoyed it. Taxi home!!! Supper and early to bed.

Alys back to dress and fetch Florence (maid). Eva came 5.30. At 6. Came Lois and all guests to my sherry party. We were 30 in all. At 8.10 11 of us to Chinese Restaurant! For supper. 3/- each – Ayrton’s, Freer’s, Willis’ and Embleton’s and me and Adrian.

Spent a.m. at Burlington House with Lois. British Artists. Lunch at home. Sewed all p.m. at Badminton frock. Elsa’s skirt and then sawing looking-glass. Felt ill –faint, pain and sick. Ate a little porridge and to bed at 8.

Temp 99.4. No pains. Stayed in bed all day. Alys came at 12, and again after lunch. We listened-in to Boat-race. Dennis and Eva to Bergel’s to see it. Alys away at 3.30. I sewed vest and listened-in – W.B. Yeats read poems from Ireland.

International pictures and at 5.15 life model Judy. Sandwiches at 7.30 at 8.15, discussion on Studio Recipes. Until nearly 10.

Stiff in stomach. Lois in car with Aunt Rosa to fetch glasses back. They took me to 4 Cambridge Gate. Alys and Phil in at 12. We did cushions, lunch and all p.m. Amy in bed all day. Phil out to fetch Eva. To Dickens and Jones’ and home later. He took me back at 6.45. Embleton’s and Geoghelan’s cocktail party. I tried to make hat all evening. Listening-in. Quicks. 3 rooms, 75 people (about). Amy maid in bed. 19 of us on to Chinese Restaurant at 9.45. Freer’s took Helen and me home 11.

Summer Time begins. Up 3 times with Tades in night supporting. After breakfast, washed and dressed her and she walked into dining-room and dinner there. I out by old pear-trees and brook. Rested, slept on bed upstairs. Miss Paine to tea, by invitation. Wrote Alys. Supper and to bed in Tades’ room at 9.30. Very good night. Only up at 6.30.

Housework, and Tades dressed. Poz walked back way to Fleabank and back by village. Made soufflé (under Mrs Hogan). On sofa, and after resting, Tades back in dining-room, till after supper. Picked cowslips for Ginx. Slept with Tades. Up at 11.30 and 3.30 and 7.

Very cold. Showers and sun.
Tades washed before 7.45 and combs on. Housework after breakfast and out. Hailstorm. Poz to tea with Mrs Pemberton and brought her back after. I got tea for Tades and self. Out for walk, cowslips! Springfield Lane. Miss Payne came and accepted post!! I took Mrs Pemberton home. Slept with Tades. Big “do” at 2.30.

Did rooms. Poz dressed Tades. (Heard Royal Academy rejected). To meet Teeds from Cheltenham at 12. Out and bought Kotex and suppositories. Poz treated Teeds and me to lunch at St Patrick’s. They rested on bed and slept. Wrote Alys, and Eva (for Kirby-grips). After tea, Teeds piano and Poz and I sewed pillowcases. Sat Teeds off at 7.30. Supper and slept with Tades on up at 2.30. Then 7.30.

Poz not out. I up village to shop. Apple and “Times”. In p.m. rested and then to tea at Pemberlouis. Indoors. Too wet for garden. B.E.B.B lighted. Very good night. Only up at 6 a.m.

Great washing of Tades and making bed. Poz and I up village and they to Cherry Coppice. Out. Rested (supper) tea. Wrote Alys and Lois. Mrs Clem Parsons called. May in, and Poz out with her crosslet game after supper. Up at 1 and 4 in night.

Out with Poz to shops. Out and fetched joint first. Up village shops again, and in at 12.50 having seen Russell’s sheep. Rested, after dinner and drying things. Wrote Aunt Bella and also for Tade’s. Nora Sanford in. Posted letters and walked to Old Church (nearby) at 7. Up twice in night.

Bought suit for Bobby Harvey for 7/6, Grey trousers 3/-, Jaeger coat 6/-. Coffee at 4 Cambridge Gate. Stayed dinner. They to Regal, Dennis met them. I home. Early to bed.

They took me to Golders Green. I met Lois at Refectory. She gave me dinner there. With her to fetch Nurses’ luggage. Then to 77 Hampstead Way. Eric and Pearl in, and took me to Golders Green at 10 p.m.

Lois to Yapton. Went with Alys to town to see Donald Hasting’s sculptured heads and to Royal Academy. Stayed till 1.30. Then to Bertorelli’s. Lunch. Alys took me home. I rested, and slept. Then painted on Paul’s head till 6.30. To Elm Park Road and dinner with Doz. Polly with Ginx (Leonard Harrison). Home about 11.

I cut out blouse on Alys’ floor. Tea in her room. Back at 6.40, fetched Eva’s shoes from my cobbler and took them back to 4 Cambridge Gate. Doz there from Florence. Home, supper.

Slight pains but much better. I out to town for my spectacles – 60 francs. Bought book on Berthe Morisot – 30 francs and tried to get “J’étais une espionne”. Home, hot and tired. Rested after dinner. At 4.15 both of us to tea at the Van Loey’s downstairs. Henri Maximilien and Charles Emmanuel 3½ and 25 months. Very “mignon”.

Out in car to dentist, for Edward and chemist’s. Then drove to Pont Glaslyn. Lovely falls and bridge (salmon had been leaping). On by Nant Gwynant lake and back through Beddgelert. Lunch. Rest. Slept. After tea to Portmeirion. William Ellis’ place. Very odd and Italian capanilo. 1/- each to pay! Home. Snowdon looking lovely.

To Lilian’s for plait 25/-. Bought hat at Bussell’s. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Tea, sewed for Alys and Eva. They packing. Phil to tea but out after. Sowerby for wireless and he and I stayed dinner. Dennis drove us back at 10.

To Janin’s, Knightsbridge at 10.30 and bought frock I saw yesterday. Home. Got pictures ready. Lunch. At 3 taxi 2/9 with tip to R.B.A. with 3 pictures. Posted letter to Alys and Eva by airmail to Copenhagen. Home. Very tired. Shopped, oranges.

Out to Sales and bought frock, waterproofs. Also food and home. Lunch. Prepared fruit-salad hor d’oeuvres. At 8.15 J.H.M. came. Cold supper and talk. He left at 11.45. Talk about the German killings – Von Schleicher.

80 degrees. Very hot. Fine.
Phil phoned. Wrote letter to Alys in Stockholm. At 12.15 to 6 Elm Park Road. Phil also. Lunch with Poz and Doz. All off to Wimbledon. Saw Crawford beat Shields (only just!) and Perry beat Wood. USA men defeated. Phil and I at 7 out to East Horsely. Picnic supper and on to Willises. Dolly, Jack and Rosamund there. Away at 10, bringing Procyon, “the little dog”. Bull terrier. Born May 10th.

Dennis and Phil came at 9.15 in new Chrysler and we took brandy to Sissie.

At 10 to Mr Badcock’s. On to R.B.A. and brought away “Study in White” by bus! Lunch. Sewed and in p.m. Very hot. Wrote Eva and Alys. To Scala Theatre at 8. Saw Ohel Palestine Players in “Esther”. Very good. Ahasuerus amusing. Man from Hastings talked. Very friendly.

Read “Design for a Staircase”. At 8 o’clock dinner at Alan Baumer’s to meet Guy Pocock and wife (daughter of Bishop of Thetford) and Tony and Diana. Home at 11.45.

Finally Eva, Katharine Buchanan and I to see “Men in White”. Very good. Rob Douglas and Cusson. Heard Dennis sent Dorothy to nursing home.

Busy doing sewing and ironing and altering beech-leaf coat and skirt. Lunch. Alys and Eva fetched me, and to Cambridge Gate. Eva drove me in Baby Austin (and Alys in Chrysler) to Maida Vale. Left Chrysler. All to King’s Cross and met Ella 4.15. I with her to Liverpool Street. We missed the train her lugguage was on. Fuss. She off at 5.16. I to Star Office. Took queue seats at New Theatre and home. Supper. Back at 7.30 and saw “Queen of Scotts”.

Indoors doing sewing all a.m. Poz phoned and Alys and Eva came with Baby Austin. Things for Harvey. I threw keys, which hit bonnet of Baby Austin! After lunch, long rest and sleep. Then at 6, Alys and Eva called for me. To 4 Cambridge Gate. Dinner there and then long drive. Barnet Way. Home 11.

Cold neck mutton junket. She saw me home in taxi at 9.15 Wrote Aunt Bella and Miss Thornton and Ella from Volta.

Breakfast in bed at 9.30. Read papers. Out to bathe at 11 with Louisa Styer. Lovely but jelly-fish. Dressed. Lunch. Rest. Children’s Fancy Dress at 3.30 and games, prizes. 600 butterfly. After dinner, talked to Mr and Mrs Bishop and Dr Bishop, their son, in lounge.

Breakfast in bed at 8.30. Read and sewed. Bathed at 11 with Louisa Styer and Mrs Bishop and son. Lovely, but not sunny. Rested and read “The Power to Kill” R.Hitchens. After tea, all watched carnival procession. In evening, stayed in dining-room and did crossword and watched fireworks. Bishop’s with us. To bed 11.30.

Breakfast in bed. Packed up. Bathed with Mrs and Brock Bishop at 11.30 Lovely. Lunch. As my room was taken, I read on lawn till 3.45. Then in car with Mrs Styer and Dr Bishop to Tankerton Hotel. Lois there. Tea. Styer away. I sharing Room 5 with Lois Faraday. Dinner. Out to Entertainers. Good fellow in evening. “Impertinent” grand-mother.

In evening, walked on front and went in cinema. Lady Doctor film and William Powell in detective film.

Heavy showers.
Motored to Canterbury again. In “ferry boat” 6d. Later to Blackfriars Monastery. Painted River Stour. Sandwich lunch, then painted again, but heavy rain flooded the Refectory Kitchen. We sat on table. Finally home, via Fordwych, Beltinge, Reculver and Birchington, and Rossetti’s window by Burn-Jones. After dinner, to bed 9.30. Felt ill and was very, very sick 5 or 6 times and diarrhoea. Brandy. Lois was splendid nurse.

Temp 99.5 so stayed in bed all day. Always same temperature. Milk and soda. I slept nearly all day. Letter from Alys at 8.30 saying Polly very seriously ill with double bronchial pneumonia. Lois phoned Alys. Lois out for walks.

In bed to breakfast. Alys phoned 10. Poz measles. Felt shakey. I got up at 10.15. Lois and I in car to Herne. Drew in churchyard (Bishop Ridley’s). Smugglers Cottages. Back to lunch at Hotel. Finished packing. Breakfast. Paid bill. At 9.30 Alys phoned. Lois took me staion and I in 10.6 train to Victoria. Arrived 11.55. Taxi home. Phoned Doz. Poz about the same – “very tired”. Out to shops. Lunch. Unpacked. Wrote Lois, Alys and Kitty. Supper. To bed early.

Warm, muggy.
Up at 7.45. Breakfast. Wrote Alys and Lois at 4. At 11 to Bank. Taxi to South Kensington, on to Elm Park Road. Poz a little better. Took Doz out for tiny walk. Out to lunch at Yellow Cat 1.20. Back to Elm Park Road. Doz rested and I in drawing-room. Tea, Sister Wallace too. Then Dr Aymer and Ginx Harrison came, I away at 6.30 with Ginx, and home. Supper. Wrote cards. Doris and Kit. Tired.

Very hot. Some sun.
To Abbey Road House about cheque. On by 74 bus to Chelsea. Violet Ormond with Doz. Polly better. Doz and I out a walk to shops. Twice. I lunched at Yellow Cat. Took scones back to 6 Elm Park Road. Then home, very, very tired. Slept on bed (called at 21 Oxford Terrace first for Abbey Road letter, and had to talk to Griffin and Allitson). Painted on Smuggler’s Cottage sketch. Postcard to Alys at 4.

Hot, fine day.
Felt very tired and so not out all day, except to post and dairy. Managed to rinse out bathing-wrap. Wrote Kitty, Lois. Slept a good part of day on bed and read a lot of “Queen Elizabeth” Neale. At 6 stomach very stiff feeling. Did some sewing and had supper and to bed at 8 as stomach so uncomfortable.

Good night. Feeling very shaky. Breakfast 8.30 Laid on bed after till 11.30 reading papers. Wrote Alys. Lunch at 2.30 to Elm Park Road. Dr Aymer there. Out to Boot’s for medicaments. Talked to Doz. Tea. Ginx came. He up to Poz. I home at 6.30 feeling much better.

Not to Chelsea all day. But feeling better. Bus to Selfridge’s. To lunch at Y.W.C.A. Home. Rested, read and slept. Did some sewing and ironing (had been to Motor-coach office to enquire, after lunch). Wrote Doris about Broadway. No water in evening. Early to bed. Good night.

Read Ironside letter and great perturbations about Ginx and measles. Home at 7.15 (bus). Doris phoned from Broadway at 8.30.

Phoned Lois. Did skirt. To Webster and Girling for ticket. Met Lois at Baker Street. Lunch at Y.W.C.A. together, on in their car to Redfern Gallery to see show. She took me home (thunder-shower). Out to get milk (United Dairies Mr Cozens as Thursday). Packed suitcase a bit; did skirt – crêpe de chine. To bed 9.30.

I up and saw Poz. Wrote Tades. Home at 7.15. Supper. Lucy’s cheese things?! Fried. Tried to improve chocolate cake which a failure. Wrote Alys.

Busy cleaning stairs and all my rooms and getting rugs and cushions unpacked from newspaper. Moved bed back in corner. Wrote Alys. To shops for cakes. Tired. Prepared tea and at 4 o’clock Frank Steel came from U.S.S. Minneapolis. He went at 5.15. I supper and out to News Theatre, Praed Street. 7d at 8 – 9.30. Saw Krakatoa Volcano (but not U.S. ship as I hoped).

Friday 31st August 1934

Fine and showers. Moderate.
Out to Morning Post office and to Daily Sketch for papers for Frank. Bought hat at Bourne and Hollingsworth. Lunch. At 4 train to Cannon Street (25 minutes). 4.30 train to Gravesend. To pier. Frank Steel met me in launch from Minneapolis. U.S. Cruiser. 10,000 tons. On board and all over it. Dinner 7.30 – 52 officers and Frank Steel. Back to landing stage at 9.45. Dropped bag in Thames with this diary. U.S. sailors got it back. Race for train; caught it and to London Bridge about 10.30. Back by 18 bus.

Washed things. Changed pictures and cleaned rooms and stairs. At 4, Ella came to tea. At 6.30, we both met Lois at Golders Green. She in car, and after seeing Ella to Sissie’s, had dinner with Lois and Laurie. All of us walked to the Shoesmith’s at 8.45. Stayed till 11.5. Looking at posters and photos of Frank Rush there. Rhodes “Lisbon”. Home at 12. Washed up!

Woke at 9 but thought it was 8! Packed and with suitcase by busses to Chelsea (Doz away with Nellie Moir). Lunch with Sister Wallace. Sat with Poz. Rested on sofa and read “Elizabeth and Essays”. Tea. Sat with Poz till 7. Out to get brown bread.

Wrote Alys. Kit phoned and Peter came in car and took me to Harro’s with Phil’s field glasses and on to 48 Cambridge Terrace, where I fetched clothes. I back to 6 Elm Park Road. Lunch. Long rest and sleep! Sat with Poz and threaded pearls. Card to Doz. Crossword puzzle. To bed at 9.30.

Out to shops and along Cheyne Walk, by river. Lovley day. Lunch. Ada out. Sister Wallace out in a.m. and in p.m. I rested till 4. Got tea and washed it up. Michael Harrison into see Poz. Major and Mrs Lafone called. Sat with her in evening. To bed about 10.

Fine, warm.
Hectic day with phone about Dr Aymer not coming till 2.15 and altering arrangement with Kit. She here at 1.15. We lunched at Yellow Cat, then she to Strand Theatre. I to Elm Park Road. Dr Aymer came only at 2.45. Saw Poz till 3.15, then me till 3.35. Then I took taxi to Strand Theatre. Saw last part of play “Living Dangerously” with Neva Carr-Glyn. Tea with Kit at Fuller’s. Back. Sister Wallace out for evening and night.

Friday 7th September 1934

Very hot and close.
Bad night with pains. Out by river and sat. Shopped. Very tired and hot. Crate from Jack Millet of fruit. Wrote letters. Slept in p.m. and felt better. Poz walked in to other room and sat in armchair 25 minutes. Miss Palgrave came! After dinner, Sister Wallace left. Sat with Poz, settled her off and to bed at 10.

Breakfast and helped Poz to wash and she on chair. Made her bed (with Ada) and did her hair. Out to shops. Dinner; sat with Poz. Wrote Jack Millet. Kathleen Gore called with grapes and vegetable marrow. Tea. Miss Sargent and Madame Duclos(?) called.

Out round houses and in a.m. cool and very windy. Ada out, so I in drawing room all p.m. Mrs Lafone called, and after tea sat with Poz, who walked about both rooms, and looked well. Got supper (partridge) for us both. Cooked Poz an egg, as too high!

Ada and I busy getting Poz and her room prepared for Dr. Out to Cheyne Walk as Dr Aymer phoned and didn’t come till 2 p.m. Good report on Poz. I wrote Doz. Tea. Sat with Poz, did crossword. She up and walking about rooms. Flowers and fruit from Mrs Hornby and Colonel Armstrong. To bed 10.30.

Lovely. Warm.
Poz had bath in bathroom 10.15. I out with Peter to 48 Cambridge Terrace. To Wallis, Bell and Croyden, Harrod’s library. Back 12.30. Got Poz dressed and down to lunch in drawing room. She up to rest in bed. I wrote Doz and postcard – Alys. Out for wool and sent to Doz. “Coley” to see Poz.

Perfect day.
Poz had bath and down at 12 “Mrs Cook” came. Did housework. Walked to river, and bought oranges and bread. Washed vest and stockings. Hung Poz. Dresses in garden. Ada out, (and to “Merrie England”). I got tea. Poz down, and we had it together. Finished “Flush” by Virginia Woolf and wrote Miss Sargent. Michael Harrison came. Got supper, and Poz had it in drawing room. Poz up to bed about 9. Read paper in her room.

Hot. 81 degrees and fine.
Up early as Dr Aymer came 9.15. Housework. My 55th birthday. Kit and Peter came. Kit to see Poz (8 minutes). I with them for drive round. Lunch. Out in garden with Poz. Her first time out! Rests. Coley came. I to 4 Cambridge Gate. Dinner with the Embleton’s who arrived at 7.35 from Layton, via west route, Phil already in London. Alys, Eva and Phil drove me home.

Did Poz’s hair with stuff. She up. Ate peaches. Alys came and we out in little car to Battersea for 30 minutes. Lunch. Rests. Poz out up and down road for about 5 minutes, on my arm. Crossword puzzles and I read Agate (James Agate – theatre critic) aloud.

Thunder.
Phoned Kit about car. Painy. At 10.45 Peter came and took me to Woolworth’s, Kensington. Back and Poz and I out with him to River and across new Bridge. Lunch. Rests. Thunder and very very hot. We walked round to the Church garden and back. Met Taff Coles. Alys and Eva over (about Phil’s birthday and me). Sissie phoned. Crossword puzzle in evening. To bed 9.50.

Read newspapers. Watered plants. Posted letters, made bed and got our supper. Read “The Middle Years” Henry James. To bed 9.45. Hot bath.

Up early for Dr Aymer, but he came at 2.15! Poz up and out round houses. Felt tired. 15 minutes. Lunch. Dr Aymer came and gave permission for Poz to go on 21st. I to Harrod’s to look at dressing-gowns for Phil. Back to tea. Neither of us out again. I phoned Alys. Did crosswords. Wrote Doz and Keyhaven.

Poz rested and I to Army and Navy for tickets. Met Eva. She chose brushes for Phil. I got him a dressing-gown at Jaeger’s and shaving brush. Met Alys and Phil. In car to Bond Street. Private View. Connell’s Gallery New Group. Home in car to Elm Park Road to tea.

Alys came over 10.30. She and I packed (she for Poz and I finished mine). At 12.30. Poz and I in taxi to Waterloo (Alys in B.G.O.). 1st class at 1.30 to Brockenhurst. Lunch on board. Arrived 3.41. Car met us and drove 8 miles to Keyhaven. Harewood House. Tea in Poz’s bedroom. I unpacked. Wire to Doz. Dinner. Poz to bed.

I out to Post Office and bus to Milford. Bought biscuits and postcards. Walked back. Lunch. Both rested in p.m. Tea downstairs. I out to beach (ate blackberries). Foam and great waves! Dinner, sat by wood-fire in evening. Looked at “Illustrations of America’s Cup” ships. Talked to Mr and Mrs Elliot about the Luling’s.

Poz not up very early as bad weather. We wrote Tades – her 80th birthday. I out to Post office and gossip with old lady there. Wasps swarm on old Mrs Adams. Lunch. Rests (sleeps!). Tea. Poz out for 30 minutes walk round gardens. Dinner. Mother of Trevor and Miss (?) sat with us in smoking-room. Listened-in America’s Cup.

Poz and I out and strolled and sat by creek and harbour. Saw kingfisher – twice. Out 1½ hours in a.m. Poz rested and I out again at 2.30 with sketching things but too windy. Got blackberries. Lay down 30 minutes, by gorse. Saw pig-sties. Pencil sketch of boat. Crossword. All but two words! To bed 10.

Grey and windy. Mild.
I out to Milford. Missed bus, so walked there and back. Bought vest and cards. Ribbon. Both slept after lunch. After tea, I out in driving misty rain to post and around. Poz not out. Finished crossword with help of Miss Welch and other lady. After dinner, listened-in – launching of Queen Mary, Cunard.

Poz and I out nearly 2 hours. On quay and sat and watched lapwing. Also saw kingfisher. Lunch. I sat in garden, drew ilex tree and walked along lane. Tea in bedroom. Out. Miss MacNamara arrived. Talked to her after dinner about birds.

Very hot – 80 degrees and fine.
Out with Poz, sat on bank. I in to an early lunch 12.45 and off in bus 1.10 to Lymington, Train to Brockenhurst and Waterloo. Phil met me at 4.19. Tube to 4 Cambridge Gate. Three Caves to tea, for Phil’s 21st birthday. Embleton’s and I dined Bath Club – caviar, Magnum of champagne. Mostyn’s came. On to Ambassadors Theatre to see “Family Affairs”. Very hot indeed (Cave’s in pit) Mostyn home. I slept in Eva’s room. She on Chesterfield.

Out to shops with Alys in car. Eva out alone. Hampstead in Baby Austin. Alys and I to Woolworth’s and to tea. Rain. Phil described his walking tour in Switzerland and Austria to me, with map and cards. All to bed about 9.30.

Poz up at 10.30. Mooched about. Out along quays and saw ringed plover feeding. We sat and watched. Lunch. Rests. Slept! Got vinegar and Epsom salts for mosquito bites. Crossword and out (with Miss MacNamara) about 35 minutes. Wound wool and talked after dinner. 6 toed Tishy and Ridd.

Out, but very wet, raining. Along towards beach and back by dyke. Both of us. Changed. In p.m. I took bus to Milford for wool. Walked back. Poz and I out watching birds after tea. Stormy sunset.

Heavy showers.
Out with Poz. Fairish intervals. Played with Ridd and ball in garden. After lunch, short rest for Poz. I knitted. Mrs Adams took Poz, Vivian Wilson and me in car to Brockenhurst. All over Forest. Tea at “Thatched Cottage” – Devon cream. Back through Lymington. Miss? Gell arrived in evening – sister of Master of Jesus College, Cambridge.

Out before 10 to see tide over quay. Painy in p.m. Poz not out all day. I wrote Lois, Menie. After lunch both slept. Boodles postponed. I sewed Poz’s blue bed-jacket. Out at 7 on quay. Miss Gell again, great talks!

Showers. Cool.
Very well all day. Out to post letter to Alys. Out with Poz at 11.30 but caught in heavy storm and got very wet. Home and washed and dried clothes. Sun on balcony. Miss Boodle and Miss Mary Boodle to tea, and Miss MacNamara had Lady Antrim, and Princess Victoria! And two other guests. Poz invited in with them. Miss Gell’s talk about Fiesole in evening.

Rain all day. Mild.
Not out all a.m. Sat and knitted. After lunch. I walked to Milford; went to Rummage Sale and bought soap and changed wool. Got very wet. Tea downstairs. Miss MacNamara took Poz and me in car (Miss Gordon driving) to Lymington and Sway to look at houses. Wet drive. After dinner, we played Patiences with Miss Gell who suggested it.

Out all the way to beach with Poz, her 1st time. Sat on shingle. Got wet from wave! Home at 1.30. Rests – disturbed (both) by mosquitos. Tea. Out by boathouse and watched wonderful sunset, and reflections, with Miss Cumberbatch. After dinner played Patience (Dutch) with Miss Gell. Laughter. News on wireless.

Out to post. Poz and I to beach and sat there all a.m. In p.m., I to Milford, and bought hairnet. Walked back by beach, low tide. Out to see sunset again. Very fine, but yellower. Patience in evening with Miss Gell, Miss MacNamara left. Wrote Aunt Bella.

Poz able to walk. Out, and watched Redshanks and then toward Pennington, a whole flock of gold-finches, 40 or so. Back and rests. Tea. Out, and saw swan hit wires and break one; not hurt too much. Home. Read Peter Wilkins aloud. Dinner. I did criss-cross patience with Misses Gell, Carlyle and Gore.

Radio of Barthou’s public funeral.

I unpacked and away to lecture with Alys. They called for me at 7.25 in Buggo. I dined at 4 Cambridge Gate. Dennis in, with very bad news of the x-rays of his spine.

Fine, mild.
Busy arranging for tea-part. To Rauber’s for cakes. Lunch. At 4.15 came Alastair Danby, Anne Shore, Alys, Eva, Phil and Teddy. Tea and then played “Keep off the Grass”. After they left, I had supper and then to Lyric Theatre to see “Theatre Royal” with Marie Tempest. Gallery. Very uncomfortable seats.

Thursday 13th December 1934

Mild, damp.
To Selfridge’s. Bought presents and Odette Keun’s book “I discover the English”. Read it. Lunch at Y.W.C.A. Home. Alys came in 3.30 – 4.15. I dressed, and to 6 Elm Park Road. Dinner 7. With Doz to Royal College of Music. Handel concert. Nellie Moir and Maud there. Saw with them and in bus home.

Friday 14th December 1934

Mild. Damp.
Woke early by post with Mother’s 5 year old portrait. Lois called for me at 10.45 in car. We to Richmond, 67 Mount Ararat Road to Ernest Buchanan’s to see his pictures. Back here 1.15. Welsh rarebits together. Lois away at 3.15. I then to Selfridge’s. Changed Keun’s book for others. To British Museum for cards. Musical. Home by 1 bus. Wrote Ella about little portrait. Supper. Listened in Arnold Bennett’s “Great Adventure”.

Saturday 15th December 1934

Showers.
Sent off parcel to Ella and Heathcroft Pass-book. After lunch to Royal Society Portrait Painters and then to 4 Cambridge Gate to tea. Teddy there, but Phil out with Helen Watson. Home. Changed; supper. To Badminton. Nice evening. Ladies four, and Embleton’s and Teddy to see “Young England”.

Up late, and all a.m. doing up Xmas presents, Leggett’s, Buchanan’s, Tades, Lucy. (Helen Watson staying weekend at 4 Cambridge Gate. Teddy most of time). Lunch at 2. Sent 10/- to Poz for Payne. Dennis and Alys called for me at 5.45 and all 3 to the Cave’s at Bickley for supper. Four nice puppies there. Home 11.

Alys called for me, we called for Poz and Alys took her to Badcock. Alys and I talked about Eva and Teddy. To Selfridge’s and to Y.W.C.A. for lunch, alone. Home. Out to 4 Cambridge Gate. Helen still there. Drew Phil in chair. On to R.B.A. Art Club until 4. To supper – Lyon’s, Holborn and to Kingsway Theatre to see “Young England”.

Tuesday 18th December 1934

Fine on whole. Mild.
Posted parcels – Tades and Leggett’s. To Lilian, hairdresser 11 – 12.10. Home. Lunch. Painted box for Sissie. Cut out black coatee from old one. To Duchess Theatre, booked stool. Supper at Lyon’s – soup, sundae and own sandwiches. Saw “Eden End”. Very good Ralph Richardson.

Fair, mild.
Busy in a.m. Lunch at Y.W.C.A. at 12.15. To 4 Cambridge Gate for 20 minutes. Onto Haverstock Hill School party 1.30 and marionettes .Manager’s Meeting 3.30 (Mrs Collins died yesterday). To 4 Cambridge Gate on way home. Home at 6.15. Phil took me in Baby Austin.

Packing up. After lunch to Inverness Court Hotel with Buchanan’s parcel. To Fine Art Society. Dorothy Burrough’s animal pictures, Tooth’s – Stanley Spencer’s drawings. Home. Packed up. Sewed.

Friday 21st December 1934

Dense fog patches, sun too.
Up 7.30. At 9 in taxi to 4 Cambridge Gate. Helen too. Dennis, Alys, Eva, Helen and I to Cambridge in Chrysler. Got Phil’s records. To Wittering. Eva lunched with Teddy. We in car. On at 2.30. Very foggy. Clearer later. Arrived Layton at 8.30. Clear there.

Saturday 22nd December 1934

Foggy. Mild.
All drove into Richmond and shopped in a.m. Dennis and Alys to Darlington after tea to meet Florence. Foggy. Train very late. All back at 6.30 or so. At about 8.45 arrived Philip and Teddy in Baby Austin. (Phil called for Teddy at Wittering aerodrome). Phil had to come up from Brighton, from Windlesham Dance.

Sunday 23rd December 1934

Less fog. Damp.
Tony arrived by bus at 5 a.m.!!! About in gardens with Alys and Dennis. After dinner walked to T with Helen, Tony and Phil. Alys and Dennis to meet Poz and Doz at Darlington. All tea late. Men billiards in evening. Ping-pong.

Monday 24th December 1934

Drizzle.
Out in garden with Dennis. Round with him. After lunch, Poz out with Dennis. 4 young ones to Richmond and Darlington. Alys and Helen walked to Ravensworth. Played “Keep off the Grass”. Ping-pong. Did up presents for maids.

Tuesday 25th December 1934

Dull.
ALys drove Helen, Tony and me to Church 10.30 for Mass. Mr Booth. No presents except Kitchen. Charades and tricks in evening. Pharmacy and Fee, Anne Sez, France’s. Sitting on bottle and book and lighting cigarette. Lifting up on two fingers (stroking head), Lifting on plank. Boots without shoes.

Wednesday 26th December 1934

Lovely. Sunny.
Doz and I walked to Ravensworth. Talked to ex-policeman, and Mr Hardy. Hunt came. Helen sat in garden! Chopped trees and branches. Cinema in evening in sitting-room, and then Matthew Mark. (Doris ill – query rheumatic fever).

Dullish. Rain.
Doz and I walked to T and along to Ireland’s farm. Eva and Teddy out too. Alys and Phil and Tony to Richmond. Wrote letters. Doctor for Doris. Alys and Dennis drove to her mother’s. Eva and Teddy to Darlington for bed-pan. Ping-pong tournament in evening. Dennis stayed to see doctor about Doris.

Friday 28th December 1934

Some fog.
Phil and I with Doz to Darlington. Saw her off 10.4. Got coffee, my hat blew off. Home. Crocheted. Alys and Dennis to meet Ginx by 5.40 at Darlington. Ping-pong in evening and talk. Phil danced with Alys and Helen Wilson.

Saturday 29th December 1934

Rain, then lovely day with sun.
Dennis took Poz and Ginz all round. We fetched logs in Baby Austin. After lunch, Dennis drove Poz, Ginx and me to Abbey Bridge and suspension bridge and Ovington River in spate. Rests. Tea. Dennis and Ginx played Splosh in billiard room. Corinthian bagatelle . After dinner, all played Ginx’ game of hiding and making fake hiding-places.
