I out at 11 ski-ing with Madame Matthey (school master’s wife). Fun. Village boys too. Drew Mrs Styer on chair on balcony. After lunch, she on balcony and Mrs Matthey did her knee. I painted mountains till water froze. Out little walk. Jigsaw with everyone; piquet and band. Letter from Alys. Wrote her.

Snow! Out at about 11.30 to Piccioni’s to buy oranges. Up steep path and nearly to Suvretta by woods. Lovely snow. Mrs S. down to lunch, but not again. Painted in room in p.m. Tea upstairs. Madame Matthey came. Bath. I dinner with Adams and Halder alone. After all the French family and Halder and Legard and Adams in Mrs Styer’s room!

Out with Madame Matthey on ski to Inn Rue. Mrs Styer on balcony. I too. After lunch, on ski on slope alone. Wrote Alys and Eva. After tea to Suvretta with message for Lady Geoffrey Watson, saw her and Southwell’s. Madame Matthey with L.S. Dr Dill to see L.S. Discouraging.

Out ski-ing with Mrs Matthey (and Monsieur and son). Mrs Styer on balcony. Tilley’s visited. After lunch I with luge up on slopes – very deep snow. Tea. Madame Matthey came. Also Lady Watson and Dr Dill. So I no bath. Barry Caulfield to dinner. He, Adams, and the Cronin’s up in L.S.’ room till 10. I slept badly. Shut window and worry.

Out on slopes by Riederman and Dodd Chalets with Mrs Matthey and Nadine (not Cronin). At 2 by post bus with Madame Matthey to St Moritz. Shopped. Funicular to Chantarella. Funny ski-schule. We walked back to Campfer, by 4.20. Mrs S. In to tea. Dinner (Barry in for 1st course in evening dress). Cronin’s to Paris. Adam’s up for piquet.

Took dose of “Opacol” at 9.15 and nearly sick.

Heard of L.B. Vincent’s death. Made sandwiches. With Laurie to Middleton. Back and all to Worthing. To find Sylvia. Finally found her at High Salvington. Had sandwich lunch. Drove back (about 13 miles each way). Laurie and Lois out a walk after tea and to fetch paper. Early to bed. Wrote Warwick.

(Stayed in all a.m. did the shopping in the p.m.). To 48 with Owen and George who laid lino (from Alys’ kitchen at 76 Cholmley Gardens) in my kitchenette till 8 -10/-. Home. Supper and bed. Very tired.

Doz came 2.30 and did lots of work. She and I to Chelsea at 6.30 in Alys’ car. She took us. Dinner in garden. Stayed the night.

To Grosvenor Hotel (near Market). Edward straight to bed. We dined. I slept in room with Kit and Barbara. Ed and 2 boys together.

Edward well again. On in cars at 10 or so thro’ Stirling, Linlithgow. Missed big car and Kit, Peter and I lunched alone in car. Across Pass of Glencoe, and finally all met at Ballachulish Hotel by ferry. Dined and slept. George up near mountain.

Edward drove Kit, Barbara and me to Kinlochleven about the fishing. Back to lunch. Peter doing car. Slept an hour and Kit’s hot bottle leaked on my foot and made puddle in bed. Walked up to James Stewarts’ (of the Glen) monument (executed there). Kit and Edward talked to Haldane’s who had arrived. I knitted cap.

Kit, Peter and I in small car to Kinlochleven. Shopped. Back on other side. To Onich Hotel, back across ferry. 5/6! Lunch. Rested, slept. After tea I walked with Barbara 1 ½ mile along loch-side. Kit and Peter in car and Ed and George about fishing. Talked to Haldane’s and all listened to George playing in evening.

All others picnic with tea, and I tea alone. Sat and knitted by ferry. They back at 7.30. Music in evening and talked to Captain Price(?) in kilt!

Wrote Mrs Jamieson. Walked up Glenachulish with Kit, Barbara and Peter to see Electric Power. Short rest in p.m. Out at 4 with them in car to Kinlochleven; they bought wools. Edward and George fishing all day in Glencoe. Peter heard he’d failed in exam.

Buchanan’s all off for day to Mallaig. I sketched on beach (the ferry). Lunch. Rested. Wrote Aunt Bella, and Alys and cards – Lois and Amy Steel. Walked along lochside, and sat behind hotel, writing letters. They back at 7.10. 140 miles. Slight pain in evening.

Finished Street of the Sandalmakers – Nis Petersen. At 4.30 we 4 in car to the Glencoe fishing ponds. Lovely. George and I walked up to the Rock, and saw ruins of cottages. Back (George and Barbara walked). Beethoven in evening. Crowded hotel.

To cinema. “Yes, Mr Brown” Very good. Back in gale and drenching rain. Kitty and I tea at Loch Level Hotel, over ferry. Very hot baths. Dinner, crocheted. Good day on whole.

Tea picnics. “Dolly” collie. Lovely sitting by loch. Home 6.45. Dressed. Dined. Crochet. Very full hotel, people sleeping in both bathrooms.

Slight pains. Housework. Met Alys in Baby Austen in Terrace, at 11. With her to shops, and fetch dinner-service. To C.H.W.’s also. Ticket for cine trade show. Lunch at Y.W.C.A. 9½d . (Alys at home). To 48 Cambridge Terrace, then to meet Alys at Phoenix, saw awful film – “Bowery” Beery and Cooper. Home and in evening to Savoy pit at 7.15. To see the Bell’s. Good seat. Sir Martin Harvey “Bobbie Geens”.

Wellish. Washed up new dinner service. Out to shops near. At 2 to visit Mrs Harvey at Samaritan. On to Alys’ with her to King’s Cross with boxes. Then we took Chrysler to Works. Back and to Lewis’ for chair material. Tea. Out to Wade’s 6 – 7. Supper at Villabella. To Sadler’s Wells to see Henry VIII. Mrs Carr-Glynn ill. Dickie Whitehorn helped with my mirror.

Well. I to 4 Cambridge Gate. Alys, Dennis and Cave’s off to Layton. On to Wade’s with 10/-. To Mansfield Road School at 11.50. Train to Hampstead Heath. To Keats’ Museum as too early and then to Elsa’s to lunch 1.15. Rested till 4. Tea. At about 6 to 4 Cambridge Gate. Eva and I dinner in her room, she in bed with cold. Quicks phoned and she wrote letter. Alys phoned too from Layton. I home at 9.30.

Man to change gas-meter and Mr Warrick. Did mirror. Out to Cozens and Selfridge’s about Polyphoto. Walked to Post Office. Euston Road for C.H.W.’s 10/. To Cambridge Gate. Lunch with Eva, who then to bed (and not to Cave’s). To see Mrs Harvey in Samaritan Hospital. Home. To Cambridge Gate again at 4.20. Tea with Eva, also dinner. Did her bag. Home 9.30.

Got tea and all 3 had it. Took Wade home at 6.45 or 7. Back. Got supper for Eva and self. Finished her velour bag. Home at 9.30.

Well. Busy doing looking-glass. Not out till 2. To Winnie Baker’s and to Woolworth’s. Back and worked, and rested. Did up pictures for R.B.A. (Royal Society of British Arts). Fetched 2 pictures back from R.S.P.P. One marked “D” for doubtful.

Perfect day. Cold.
Well. Alys came, and (in Baby Austen) we took pictures to Royal Society of British Arts in Suffolk Street. Then on to Cambridge. To 13 Alexandra Street and saw Phil and had lunch with him. Tony Groves-Raines in after. We away at 2.35 and drove to Kidderpore Avenue. Jane Webb’s cello recital. Breval “Contemp of Handel or Mozart”. To 4 Cambridge Gate to dinner. Eva’s bookcase there. Dennis scarred by sulphuric acid. American “British Encyclopaedia”. Home by bus 9.45.

Well. Alys came and we in Baby Austen to fetch loud-speakers from Croydon (Bakers Selhurst). Lunch at Bertorelli’s. To Heal’s and Maple’s about mattress. Alys to Wade, I home. Changed and off to Kitty’s at 4.30. Tea with her and Edward. On to 77 Hampstead Way to Faraday’s. at 6.30. Supper with Lois and to Art Club. Miss Yates. Very good. Short poses.

To 77 Hampstead Way at 6.35. Dinner. Then Lois and Laurie to Hippodrome to see “Bronte’s” – Sangster. I with Aunt Rosa all evening till 10.50. Laurie took me home in car.

To 4 Cambridge Gate. Coffee (late). Eva in. Did her bag buttons. To Princes Theatre, supper at Bozzini’s and then to see “Wandering Jew” alone. (slight feelings).

Well. Busy planning and doing fur cape. Out to shops. Lunch. Did fur cape. Felt coldy. Alys in at 4 and I with her in Baby Austen to 4 Cambridge Gate. Coffee. Dennis too. He cold, and I too, so not to Badminton. Loudspeakers very trying to poor Dennis. Eva at Quick’s. Alys and Dennis took me home 10.15. Found letter from R.B.A. (Royal Society British Artists) sent by Bourlet. Only I rejected!!!

Well. Mrs Harvey came again – 1st time since Hospital. I out with Alys to Bourlet’s to fetch picture. To see tea-services and I home to lunch. All p.m. mounting sketches and to Wade’s. At 5.40 to Golders Green. Expected Lois meet me but no. Dinner at 77 Hampstead Way. Doris Pocock there. Ernest Blaikley after. Showed our sketches.

Alys came. 44 bus at 4.45 to Wade’s. With her till 6. Home. Supper. To Aldwych Theatre. Saw “Ladies’ Night” Sydney Howard. Neva Carr-Glynn as Bath Attendant. Upper circle. Went to see Neva in her dressing-room after show.

I dined with her 1.30. We both rested after. Tea 4.45. To Marble Arch cinema to see Berkley Square at 6 – 8.30. Met Alys and Eva there and Mrs Styer took us all to our respective homes. Supper.

To Selfridge’s for photos (no good). Prepared for interview from Hippodrome. Mr Clifford at 12 till 1. Lunch. Sewed Eva’s green beret. Put away pictures. At 6.30 to 4 Cambridge Gate. Nancy Cave there, but to a dance. I had dinner with Eva, who slight antrum pain and looked very tired. Home at 9.20 or so.

Met Selfridge man with my photos on way home. Paid 1.5.6. for them. Quiet p.m. Very late lunch. Altered fur coat. Out to buy bloaters and had them for supper. Wrote Ernest Blaikley.

Met Lois at Royal Society of British Arts (R.B.A.) 10.30. Asked about Club, and then to York Street to see Secretary. To Alys’ to lunch. Sat with her, and then home at 3.45. Sat and sewed by fire all evening.

Indoors doing a lot of looking over presents. Mrs Harvey to Mrs Carr-Glynn after me. At 2.30 I took her to Wade;s and left her to talk to Wadie. To Winter Garden Theatre dress circle at 8 to see “On the Rocks” Shaw’s new play. Rather dull.

I to lunch at Miles’ and with Ethel to meeting at Mansfield Road in car. She took me home in car. I to Selfridge’s to get my Polyphotos. Home. Did up photos and wrote Ayrton’s.

Did up presents. To shops (Alys to Wade’s in a.m.). At 2.15, Ethel Miles called for me and to Kingsgate Road party. On to 4 Cambridge Gate and Ethel called on Alys. I stayed on. Peter and tea. Phil went out to meet Diana and Eva. Phone from Standon about Wadie. Alys and I in taxi there. Wade died, in her chair, about 4.30. Stayed there till 8.30. Dr Launders and Police. Dennis came 8.40. We back and dinner at 4 Cambridge Gate. Stayed till 10.40. Eva and Phil in. Dennis and Phil drove me home.

Alys phoned about Wade’s cremation. I phoned coroner. Aunt Rosa and Lois came with presents. In their car to Wade’s. Locked her room up. Taxi to mortuary, St Pancras. Last look at Wadie. Taxi home. Lunch. Packed. Charles Wade called at 4.30. At 4.40 taxi to King’s Cross. Met Eva, Dolly and John and Tony Wilson. 4.23 to Darlington. Dinner on train at 8.45. Phil met us at 10.30. To Layton.

Out in gardens with Dolly. Men and Tony all digging bank. After lunch, Phil drove Dolly, Helen, Eva and me to Richmond. Bought stuff for Victorian bathing dress. Men upstairs in billiard room in evening. We in smoking room.

Phil drove Alys, Dolly, Helen, Eva and Tony to Church. After lunch we listened-in 2 – 3. King’s Speech – colonies. Photograph Presents. Tea. Airballs. After dinner, all played Murder game till 11 or past.

Very damp and foggy.
Very late breakfast. Mrs Henderson gave notice to quit!! Men digging and others walked to East Layton. I drew in gardens. After lunch, at 3 came Anne Hotham, from Barringham, (Lady Millbank’s niece and Basley’s fiance). Dennis talked to Cooper about house position. Treasure Hunts, Phil’s and Dennis’. Wrote leters. Roulette game until midnight.

Dug in garden with Dennis a good time “Father’s Folly”. Tea, and Dennis, Phil, Dolly and John in car tried to go to Darlington to let John go to London, fog made it impossible, so they came back. Tony’s treasure hunt and Rummy in evening,

Clearer and milder.
Very late breakfast. Cut out Eva’s Victorian bathing-gown. Got out bones with Phil. In p.m. Dennis, Dolly, Alys and John to Darlington and John off to London. The rest of us digging till teatime. Sewed after. In evening, “Matt, Mark” game and adverbially vulgar and then pyramids in billiard room.

Rain. Out to big quarry with Dolly, Phil and Tony. Dennis gland tender from poisoned hand. At 2.30 Sir Bedford Dorman came and took Helen and Tony to Hutton Rudby. I wrote letters, and we sewed. Read Sea Serpent book. All in billiard room and Dennis and Phil played. We sat by fire.

Dennis, Eva, Phil and I all worked all a.m. digging and picking. Hot and thirsty! Alys and Dolly walked around. All p.m. writing letters and sewing Eva’s Victorian bathing-dress. In evening, all played Pyramids (spoken).

Perfect. Hot sun. Clear.
I worked with Dennis and Phil all a.m. digging. Dolly and Eva packed. Rosamond and Bertie Kaye (Bursar of Sedbergh) and Penny to dinner. Phil and I and Eva to Darlingon. Eva off by 3.20 train to London. Tea (Kayes and Dolly had gone). We 4 read in smoking room. Billiard room after supper. Phil won.
30 years ago discovered visible difference between male and female sperm cells. so that they could be separated, and sex controlled and determined.
