[1] MS Carmania was a British ocean liner of the Cunard Line. In World War I, Carmania was converted to an armed merchant cruiser equipped with eight 4.7-inch guns. She subsequently engaged and sank the German merchant cruiser SMS Cap Trafalgar, during the Battle of Trindade.

[2] In August 1914 the Royal Victoria Patriotic School in Wandsworth became the Third London General Hospital. The medical staff were seconded from the Middlesex Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital and University College Hospital.

[3] Edwin Björkman (1866-1951) was a Swedish-American literary critic, translator, newspaperman, and author, and, from 1925, a resident of North Carolina.
