Wrote letters, etc. Out to shops with Tades. Read and talked over fire. Tades, Sylvia and I up to Alys and Dennis to tea. Bubbles in great form. Thurstons there.
Sunday 2nd January 1910
Up to Hampstead to Faradays. Tea-party of Louis, Eric, Margaret, Dolly, Rex, Charlie and G. Allingham here in p.m. Rather fun. Alys and Dennis in evening.

Up to Hampstead. Bought hat. Packed and off to Northwood to stay with Kit at 4.28.

To town and shopped at Barker’s. Kit bought dress. Lunch at Cabin. To see H. B. Irving in The House Opposite. Eva Marie.

Warm weather. To Lyons Popular to lunch (my treat) and to the Follies afterwards. Not good, I thought, again.

Out and met Elsa and had desultory stroll with her. Virginia and children, pram, etc. Rested in p.m. back to Golders Green. Tades and Sylvia still there.

Wrote letters, accounts, etc all a.m. Out to Finchley Road p.m. All 3 dined at Lyons Popular and to The Brass Bottle, Vaudeville. Very good and great fun.

Painted Sylvia 1½ hours. Read paper and to tea with Bella Monkhouse and then called on Mrs E. Vernor Miles. Dined with Alys and Dennis. Clayton there.

Painted Sylvia all a.m. She off to Hindhead after lunch to stay. Mrs Miles to tea. Dined with Alys and Dennis. Rex in. Long political discussions.

Supper Trenton. Greatest fun all day and very very interesting. Dr Alexander and “Cambridge”. Woodrow Wilson got in for New Jersey. 60,000 majority. Cleveland Dodge. Great philanthropist, New York. Bridges, editor of Scribner’s and poet.

Lovely sunshine on snow. Took dogs out. Sollys called in sleigh for us and Dory drove us all to Wycombe to Pomona Grange. Great fun. Lovely moonlight drive home – fields, etc with his team of 5 year old’s called Belle and Beauty.

Sent off 10th letter to Alys and one to Doz. Drove in sleigh (with Davey) to Newtown in p.m. Slow work. Thick snow.

Kelly came in very drunk and had to be talked to. John away all day. Drove to Richboro in sleigh. Dr Davis came and all to Flag celebration at Miss Twyning’s school. Dr Davis back to supper 5-8 then away.

35 square miles in an hour of sketching it. General and 1000 men and when to ford Nullah. Man who tried to kill him, weaponless. Sleeping tent, all open and reading “Lions of Tsavo” while jackal gave “panther call”. Quite difficult to ordinary call. Man-eating panther a little way off.
Hunting jackal – pack (hounds) out there but not as good as fox. Country so flat and uninteresting for hunting compared to England; but jackal gives very good run.
Poor young British officers killed on frontier and buried. 18 months later brought back, fear of desecration.
Raiding –
British: protection to Afghans across for our own sake. Whole villages go through. Very fair and good looking with bright complexions and good small teeth, Afghan women.
First goes Head of Village, then his special wives on horses. Then all others – young girls and boys walking and last of all, discarded wives of Headman, walking, only about 30 years old perhaps, but old and stooping, carrying great heavy bundles of all the camp and immediately on arriving they have to light fires and cook.
Ellen Terry said Aunt Alice was “a little brick” Dinner on 21st = oysters (blue point) (8 each). Boiled rock bass, sauce, pair of mallard ducks, browned potatoes and salad. Jelly with ice cream. Fruit. (Salad – lettuce, ring of tomato jelly and celery mayonnaise inside).
