[1] The Mollusc – Play by Hubert Henry Davies. First performance: 15 October 1907.

[2] The Secret Agent: A Simple Tale is a novel by Joseph Conrad, published in 1907. The story is set in London in 1886 and deals with Mr Adolf Verloc and his work as a spy for an unnamed country (presumably Russia).

[3] The Hon. Lilian Helen “Lily” Montagu, CBE (1873 – 1963) was the first woman to play a major role in Progressive Judaism.  In 1907, Montagu was raised to the peerage as Baron Swaythli.

[4] Brooke Deedes (1847 – 1922) was an Anglican priest in the last three decades of the 19th century and the first three of the 20th. He was the incumbent at Hawkhurst from 1897 to 1900; Hampstead from 1900 to 1912;
