[1] Sherlock Holmes is a four-act play by William Gillette and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, based on Conan Doyle’s character Sherlock Holmes.

[2] Elijah Op. 70, MWV A 25, is an oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn depicting events in the life of the Prophet Elijah as told in the books 1 Kings and 2 Kings of the Old Testament.

[3] Silvanus Phillips Thompson FRS (1851 – 916) was a professor of physics at the City and Guilds Technical College, London. Thompson also wrote a popular physics text, Elementary Lessons in Electricity and Magnetism, as well as biographies of Lord Kelvin and Michael Faraday.

[4] St Etheldreda’s Church is a Roman Catholic church in Ely Place, off Charterhouse Street in Holborn, London. The building is one of only two surviving in London from the reign of Edward I, and dates from between 1250-1290.

[5] Sir Henry Hamilton Johnston GCMG KCB (1858 – 1927), was a British explorer, botanist, artist, colonial administrator and linguist who traveled widely in Africa and spoke many African languages.
